Watching a Rolling Stones TV special about their new tour, when the reporter asked the people whats their favourite song, they said of course: Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Tumbling Dice, JJF, as you can see, this songs cant be out of the setlist, at least in stadiums shows.

Yes, but I don't need everyone of them every time except for one:
Honky Tonk Women. Of all warhorses I wouldn't be without that one when going to a show.

"as you can see, this songs cant be out of the setlist, at least in stadiums shows"
Of course, SeNdEr, but not only in stadiums. Everyone knows that a concert without JJF, HTW or Brown Sugar would be NOT a concert of the Stones. I know, some "hardcore fans" disagree but the Stones are not performing only for them. Fortunately! I think we need a balance between the decades and that's what the Stones do. Look at the set lists. Warhorses from 60s and 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s...

I was On Stage for the HArtford show Friday night. Great show. They need to have a differnt set list. I have been seeing them for 16 years now and don't want to hear Start Me Up as an opener. That was the SW opener and I wanted something new.

I have heard Miss You each tour along with You Got Me Rocking, and TD. Please give me something different. Beast the same thing.

She's so Cold and All Down the Line were grat songs b/c they don't play them ever. People still know these songs and will enjoy them.

I can live with JJF, Sympathy, YCAGWYW, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar every time they play b/c thoes are wonderful songs that they rip each time. It is like a new song each time they play it.

Only my view on it.

Hey gibb,

How was your experience onstage? likes dislikes etc.

Listen to the radio; they play the same songs over and over again,
not just by the Stones but any band. Look at how well greatest hit
albums sell, replacing all the orginal discs on the store shelves.
This is what most people like. Any band that hopes to give the
people what they want needs to play their most popular songs.
Stick to the hits and you'll be a hit..........

The Stones vary their sets a good deal compared to a lot of bands
who tour relentlessly with stock setlists. Of course, they have a lot
of hits, or warhose, or hot rocks, call them what you may, because
they have a lot to play. But they also often throw in some
obscurities for us die hards. Licks was particularly
impressive in this regards, as thye went on tour
promoting the reissue of their whole catalogue.
But you can't expect that every time.

Right now, like it or not, it probably makes most semse to
promote the new album with a few recognizable trax being
covered live amongst a collection of instantly
recognizable hits, with a few rarities thrown
in for the die hards. So for now, we get
She's So Cold, Shattered, Bitch, with hints
of Moonlight Mile, Sway to come.

Like it or not, I'd say the Stones commercial
instincts for promoting a new album and making
another comeback of sorts, are just about right!

What do you mean? They give us something different

(a) Four new songs + two new covers.

(b) Look at the set lists:

Shattered, only 4 times played during Licks Tour.
Out of Control, only one time played during Licks Tour.
Beast of Bearden, only 4 times played during Licks Tour.
Heartbreaker, only 4 times played during Licks Tour.
Ruby Tuesday, only 6 times played during Licks Tour.
The Worst, only 6 times played during Licks Tour.
She So Cold, didn't played during Licks Tour.

Even Miss You played 18 times, All Down The Line 26, Bitch 26, OUT OF 117 (the total number of the Licks concerts).

Why do you want? ALL the "warhorses" out of the lists? Gimme a break...

If only they had announced this as the "No Hits Tour". A worldwide tour where they vow to never play the FM radio staples. Start with She Was Hot, end with Flight 505. Bring it on!!

I went with a bunch o the lads from work to
a Neil Young concert a few years back during the
Silver album tour. He played a long show, highlighting
most of the new album, and a whole bunch or real obscurities.
It may have been a die hard fans wet dream, but the only
song most of the crowd recognized was Down by the River,
and they sat on their hands most of the show. Oh there
was polite clapping and cheers, and there's no doubt
he was well respected for this, I mean the man's
got integrity in bundles, but but but.........
it was ultimately quite a let down, even
quite boring for most in the audience,
and not a show most of the lads ever
mentioned again. I think they were
very disappointed, and quite frankly,
as far as just having a good rock and
rolling party time with the boys, so was I.....................

With all the buzz that's already being created with the tour and the antisipation of the new album, The Stones could be in the process of pulling off what very few in show biz have been able to do, and that is, after 43yrs make yourself viable again. Man, that's incredible. Playing 'warhorses' is part of that formula, they HAVE to do it. And, if you were in a band like this wouldn't you want to give the fans examples of your best work? You'd be cheating them if you didn't. So get over it, sit back and enjoy watching as the boys make history again.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

What amazed me both shows I attended was that I'd think, "Oh no not T. Dice again...It's BS...JJF....IORR" & would then forget my disappointment when they just rocked the house on all the 'horses, amazing they still play these numbers with such energy & obvious pleasure. Only one MJ seemed a bit bored by, or not into, was SSC.

A lot of people will see the Stones for the first time, i dont know why, maybe because of Forty Licks?, but hardcore fans should understand in a stadium show there is more than 30.000 people, and i think all of them want to hear Satisfaction, Tumbling Dice, JJF, etc, gibb76 you are a lucky guy, you saw the stones many times, but i live in Argentina and we saw them only 2 times, so you should understand us, Mick said it one time, stadium show is for non-hardcore fans and we must play warhorses songs, theater shows for hardcore fans.

I truly understand why they do this. Yes I am lucky to have seen them many time. My mother went Friday night and loved the whole show, as for my brother and I, we would have liked to have heard some other "odd" songs that they do not play very often.

As for being On Stage it was different. I am glad that I spent the money for the tickets, but I would not do it again. You are looking at their back side the whole time and miss the stage pyro and effects and all. I was "on stage" and have no clue what the thing looks like except for some pictures that I have seen posted. I missed that this show.

I think as long as they play satisfaction they do not need to play any other WH. So, its up to their imagination and I think thats why fans get a little upset. Mix it up make it interesting???

I consider it very wise to give the people at large what they want. At the same time I think that is just as wise not to give the people all that they want. Give them part of it. That is, don't give them so much of it. Warhorses should be a mere privilege to experience, not the stable diet. Make people come back for more of something else of it - on another concert in some other city, possibly on another tour smiling smiley. Especially, make the journalists that create expectations in advance, themselves eagerly wonder which warhorses - by then not warhorses anymore, but special treats - it would be their privilege to experience. Turn arrogant journalists into enthusiastic listeners, spreading the message. Make even the die-hard fans crave for the songs that now make them frown in front of their PCs.

(Presented as a way of thinking. Wishful thinking probably, but then as a consequence, more new tracks and more rareties would be obtainable as well. Such as "Tell Me", Good Times, Bad times", "Long, Long While". Nice try?)

This is a good discussion, good arguments from both side. I always dream of a rare show or a theathershow, but I never get dissipointed when I hear the warhorses. For me each concerts with the Stones are 2 hour in heaven.

Well said, Witness. I recall the time when "Satisfaction" was not stable diet, but a rarity - during the 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1978 tours. The few times they actually played it back then made one jump from the seats.

I was eating dinner at a pub next door to Fenway on the Friday night before the Sunday opener. I listened to the Stones rehearse for almost two hours. They even played Miss You twice and Honky Tonk Women twice. They did not rehearse Brown Sugar or Jumping Jack Flash. I was concerned they might not play BS during the show. I know many of you do not like the obvious songs, but those songs are the history of the Rolling Stones. Without those songs, we're not here 40 years later talking about them. Sway, One Hit To the Body, & Mona did not make them famous and would not sustain their fame. The only answer is for the Stones to play longer shows. McCartney played 31 songs on his last tour....imagine the rarities the Stones could play if they added 9 or 10 more songs to their set list. I'm all for the rare songs, just not in place of the most famous songs in rock history.

In a stadium, 90% of the audience are casual fans.

Only the diehards want to hear the obscurities. That's why they played them in the theatre/club shows in '02/'03, when it was whittled down to only the hardcore fans. If they played "Hand of Fate" at Fenway, the place would have gone silent, it means nothing to the average person.

Hello, bonjour, allreet,

I think we should make the distinction between diehard fans and stoopid, bitter, anal retentive train spotters who continually whinge about fookin set lists.

To those people:

They play no warhorses at the big gigs.
Only 'rarities'.
Joe Public gets pissed off not hearing what they know.
Gigs get shite reviews from shite journalists who don't hear what they know.
Joe Public stops going to see Stones in large numbers.
Shite journalists document demise.
Stones get @#$%& off.
Stones go into hibernation again.
It's getting too late for that game.

Stoopid. bitter, anal retentive trainspotters happy?
Probably - if they have a better collection of boots than you.

Oily.

Very well for the tone here then that Oily_Dipstick writes as the happy die hard fan, while it is left to me (among others) to serve as one of "the stoopid, bitter, anal retentive train spotters who continually whinge", and that is not the other way round!

On with the show, good health to you!

OK, Oily, but what's the point? Every musician must get bored being restricted to warehorses only, or a least to a large degree.

Only a few warhorses = bands gets killed by the general public
Too many warhorses = band gets killed by the diehards and in the end by their own increasing boredom.

Know what? That's what I call a dilemma. Or call it a trap in which the Stones are caught.

They can't please everybody. They could play a 6 hour set and people would still bitch and moan about songs not being included.

In 1997 I saw an incredible Stones show that included a healthy dose of hits and lesser-known material, and when it was over, some dumbass behind me was angrily cursing the Stones out -- "I spent $60 for this ticket and they didn't even $#!@* play 'Ruby Tuesday' or 'Paint It Black'...what a RIPOFF!!".

These guys can't win!
