…. always thought Beck was
doin his best to look like Link Wray …..

...or Nigel Tufnel.

but can he play "lick my love pump" on piano?

That's why he hired Max Middleton and Jan Hammer. What a thought!

I remembered Beck playing a great guitar on "Surf's Up" but on "Surfin USA" it's really something else : [youtu.be]

Is there anyone ELSE on earth who plays stuff like that ?

I wish he played that kind of material during his shows instead of dreary material like "Morning Dew" was that singin' dude whose name I conveniently forgot ;-)

There's the 'old school' Jeff Beck and the prog-rock Jeff Beck. I like the latter most. Exquise actually. It took off from Blow by Blow to me.

Yeah, Blow by Blow, What Mama Said are fab but what's unique in "Surfin' USA" is that he applies all the "modern" stuff/sound he invented and applies it to this ultra classic tune, but good fun too with universal appeal. Music at its best !

Jimmy Hall was the man with the wet willie, haha. I've seen Jeff so many times. He always throws you a curveball somehow. I sat front row in Vegas for Jeff/Brian Wilson. All Beck did was basically totally reinvent surf music with the encores with Brian. It was stunning.

I will go see him in Glasgow on Friday.
His gig clashes with Queen + Adam Lambert’s near-sold-out Glasgow arena shows on Thursday and Friday, during the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Jeff Beck was my first rock concert. July 23, 1975 at the O'Keefe Centre in Toronto. I had missed out on the Stones the previous month! I couldn't get a ticket. Jeff was great! But he did not look up once throughout the entire set. Not even at the end...

He almost never does. When I saw him in Utrecht in 2015 he looked up after the first tune and said: "Hi, that's the only Dutch word I know". And the band introduction at the end. That's it.

They haven't toured since Corona (at least Jeff Beck) and pick it up now while they can.We don't know what happens when Autumn sets in - back to zero? I'm going to catch John McLauglin at the NSJ in Rotterdam. Maybe the last chance to see all the old legends.

Sadly I gotta pass on the Jeff Beck Helsinki show. Just too much on my plate right now (just bought Bruce Springsteen tickets to myself and friends to 3 shows next year).

Looking forward to Clapton though, that show was postponed twice due to Covid.

Wonder what his band will be for the tour. In Paris in 2016 I saw him with a rather bland blues singer called Jimmy Hall...I love Beck but material and singers is a bit of problem. He should tour with Imelda May again !

saw him with Jimmy Hall on the same tour in Munich and I think that he needs no singer at all

Yeah, not a bad singer but a "by the numbers" type and the old blues/rock numbers he sang were of little interest to me for sure. He was supposed to play with Rosie Bones but she had other commitments that night...

Maybe he (or the promoters) feels he needs to have a singer for the show to be "fuller".

Anyway looking forward to finding out who will be with him for that tour.

Got back from Jeff Beck’s Glasgow gig. Johnny Depp joined him in the middle of the set, sang and played the guitar for about half an hour. For half a dozen songs he performed, Depp changed a guitar one after another, on almost every next song, which gave me an impression of a wannabe rock star. His notoriety aside, nobody can deny Depp is one of the most famous and biggest film stars of our times. But as a musician, he is mediocre at best. His singing assured me how Jimmy Hall, Beck’s longtime collaborator and singer who is shunned by fans as not particularly remarkable, was competent in his own right.

Beck was fantastic as ever, exhibiting all of his prowess as a gifted guitarist, the art of tricky yet convincing playing. I don’t understand why he is so keen on Depp the musician.

I bought the ticket in the morning of Wednesday, 1 June, only two days before show day. At that moment of time, the seats were roughly 70% full at most. When I checked the venue website the next day, I was dismayed to find the show sold-out. Once the news of Depp joining the tour circulated on the internet, fans reacted and took action. As I approached the venue, I saw hordes of people flocking outside the stage door. Apparently they were Depp fans, not Beck’s. The general vibe I felt from the floor before, during and after the show was diffident from any Jeff Beck concerts I had attended before. I saw a Captain Jack Sparrow cosplayer in the foyer! Tremendous cheers greeted Depp when he took the stage. Raucous cries erupted here and there from time to time while he was there. A girl was seen trotting to the stage, throwing a red envelope at his feet…

I think Jeff Beck is amazing. The only English guitar slinger from the 60s with everything intact. He's appearing with Rod Stewart, who I think is done, at the Hollywood Bowl in September. I might attend, more for Beck than Stewart.

Rod Stewart doesn’t play an instrument, he sings. And he is not in another league than Wood, just better. A classical guitarist like Pepe Romero or John Williams it could be said are in a different league than Beck. His work on Jagger solo albums are not in another league from say Mick Taylor’s best with the Stones. And he cannot play rhythm like Keith could at his best. His solo albums to me are boring.I could never hear the greatness in Blow by Blow.Tecnically great guitar, but has he ever written a great song

Saw him in Manchester night.Amazing gig.Jeff Beck is for sure the greatest rock guitarist on the planet.I am afraid Keef,Ronnie and Mick T.are leagues behind.

The appearance of JD was the icing on the cake to a wonderful night.

Everything intact. What do you mean? David Gilmour has been consistent with the guitar.

Yes today he might be.But he could never play rhythm guitar like Keith at his peak.He never has come up with a classic riff like Keith has.He also has never stayed with a band because he has no feel or touch for ensemble playing. He is always the focal point of a group.Everything revolves around him .Give any guitarist that platform to flail away and have everything revolve around himand see what you getGive Ron Wood circa1974-1977 that opportunity and see what you get.The Stones have always been a 2guitar band. When has Beck ever played with another guitarist without hogging the spotlight. And Beck was never better than Taylor circa 1972.And technique wisehe is not greater than today’s greatest classical guitarists. He is therefore not the greatest guitarist on the planet

Hi Taylor1 I did refer to Jeff Beck as the greatest rock guitarist on the planet.I am not comparing him to classical guitarists. It’s unfortunate that our Stones trio of guitarists have declined so much.Jeff Beck is still at the top of his game,in a similar way to Mick is as a front man.I hear your other points and agree with them.Cheers.

Okay. But I don't consider Gilmour in the English Guitar Slinger God Pantheon of the 60s, ala Page, Clapton, Beck, and whoever I've forgotten. Don't get me wrong, Gilmour is extraordinary, but I don't find him as exciting as the others.
