No one asked, but since the microphone in the large, first pic sticks out so prominent, perhaps you'd like to know what you're looking at.

It's a Sennheiser MD 409 U3.
a very nice dynamic mic also often used infront of guitar amps.
since the XLR connector and capsule are angled at 90° it can dangle in front of a cab without a micstand just by the cable.

on picture number 2, it's surprising to see that our guys seem to be far from the crowd, that must be frustrating, isn't it ?

it's so exciting to play in front of the crowd, I mean 1 meter from them. I've played many times as amateur in Paris during the "Music feast" on the 21st of June and it's just amazing to have people in front of you who could easily kiss you or bite your ears ! lol

OK... Technical questions for people who watch Charlie closely during shows or anyone who has happened to witness the answer to any of the following questions/observations...

1st Topic: In the Pinkpop and Sydney photos, a drum tuning key is clearly shown on his mounted tom. I'd have to guess that it is ALWAYS there.
My questions:
Does Charlie ever use it?
How often?
During a show?
During sound-check?

2nd Topic: Regarding the close up photo of the stick bag, I count:
5 pair of wood tip stick which I would assume are Charlie's "normal sticks"
1 pair of 'colored' sticks
1 pair of nylon/plastic tipped sticks
3 different sets/types of mallets (I'd assume that two are for drums and one is for cymbals)
1 pair of wooden "blastics/broomsticks"
1 (possibly 2) pair of plastic "blastics/broomsticks"
and something white that I can't identify (possibly a set of closed brushes is my guess?).
My questions:
How many of his "normal sticks" does he actually use during a show?
Does he use the colored/nylon tipped sticks on specific songs and which one's?
Regarding the mallets, which sets are used on which songs and is my theory of some for drums some for cymbals correct?
Regarding the "blastics/broomsticks", I can only assume that he's not using them for volume control but a specific sound/attack that he's looking for so, again, which songs get them?
Lastly, what is the white "thing" all the way on the right?
Does Charlie ever use actual brushes in a Stones show? With his jazz band I could easily believe that he would use brushes to "make/stir the bacon" but can't think of when he might with the Stones.

Yes, Charlie used brushes in a Stones show e.g. during 'Angie' , 'Wild Horses' and 'Sweet Virginia' at Paradiso #1 26-May-1995.

A little off topic from this but the best video clips I've seen from behind a drummer is Queen's performance at Live Aid. I'm not a huge Queen fan but that was probably the best performance I've ever seen. Seeing the crowd all clapping along to Radio GaGa was incredible and Freddie was absolutely magnificent. I downloaded the whole performance on Youtube (don't know how to link it here though).

He uses the mallets on Moonlight Mile, not sure about any other songs.

As a drummer myself, I'm guessing this is more of a mojo than anything else--like baseball players who always wear a certain pair of socks for a game. There's no way Charlie would be tuning his drums during a show, or even at a sound check. By the time Mr Watts takes the throne, everything has been tuned to perfection. I haven't examined all the pics, but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Charlie instructs his drum roadie to place the key on the same lug every night. It's a "thing."

Excuse the silly question but is there some story about why he has that carpet? At first I though it was a genuine Persian rug but close up it looks like an - ahem - inexpensive version, like the one I used to have in my living room.

The rug is just for stability's sake.
The kit needs grip otherwise it starts sliding during a show. And that is extremely annoying. Many bands use "persian" rugs as they look better also after they are sprayed with wood chips from the sticks.

Most touring musicians use a 'rug', it feels better than playing on a 'wooden' floor. Look at the MTV unplugged gigs, they all do it

Exactly...the feet of the drum kit will start rattling around and shifting slightly as they're being pounded. A rug allows the feet to grip something and stay relatively settled one spot.
