RIP and prayers to the people of France.
This is a political matter and hopefully Western peoples can formulate a strategy to deal with it.

this attack apparently has NO bearing whatsoever with (political) terrorism - religiously inspired or otherwise.

Don't know wher you get that from, but I just saw the press conference of the French authorities stating the EXACT oposite - in fact: stating explicitely that he was NOT in any way linked to nor showed interest in Ismalism 'et al'. Not loccally, not nationaly, not internationaly.
But true; you never know what might show up in the future.

European news channels now clearly state it's NOT;

These were the acts of a lone nutcase; heavily depressed by heavily going wrong. (Not justifying here; just stating facts.)
Poor way to end it; I completely agree.
And absolutely demonic to take so many innocent people with you (remember that German pilot, 1 or 2 years ago?)...
But NO religious fundamentalism, and NO political motives involved here.
There was 'terror' allright, in the streets of Nice yesterday; but it wasn't "Terrorism".
A quite clear-cut case of suicide, unfortunately.
That's what I'm picking up, the last couple of hours...
My thoughts go out to all the victims' & survivors' souls.

Another sad day.
I am going to say something that may offend some. If this was another ISIS attack, then get real and do what Winston Churchill would have done a long time ago, declare war and get on with it.
