Most Stadium Shows In One City On A Single Tour.

When the Stones played 6 shows at Shea Stadium in 1989, was that their record for stadium shows in a single city during a given tour? I think it is but maybe they matched that elsewhere in the world?

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

I believe they did 10 at the Tokyodome the next year. I think they did 6 at Wembley Stadium also that year?

I used to work with a Grand Funk Railroad fan who a few times repeated the myth that GFR still had the record for selling out Shea Stadium the fastest and selling the most tickets. Its a often repeated myth that is total nonsense.

I got annoyed with it and showed him that its not true and showed him what the Stones had done. Was kind of a sad moment but I hate myths.

They played Tokyo a couple nights after Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas. Their last show was on Feb 27. I'm sure they could have done one or two more but Paul McCartney had 6 shows booked there right after!

Wow - Packing a stadium 10 times is an awesome achievement! I remember how I thought it was a big deal that they were doing most US stadiums 2 times in each city back in 1981. There will never be another band like the Rolling Stones!

Has any other band played as many stadium shows in one city? I know Billy Joel has been playing Madison Square Gardens once a month for quite a while now.
I recall Springsteen playing multiple nights perhaps at Giants Stadium in New Jersey.

Checked Wiki and it says Springsteen did 10 shows at Giants Stadium in 2003, but there were 7 gigs initially and then 3 more later in the tour...

Count the 3 shows he did at Shea Stadium in Queens later, and that's an impressive run through NY/NJ. And that's not counting the arena shows he did in the area on that tour.

Michael Jackson was going to play 50 shows in O2 Arena, but sadly he passed away before it's starded.

And Michael Jackson wanted to do 50 shows in the O2 in London in 2009/2010 (Wikipedia) -- both can now play countless numbers of shows together in heaven ....

Celine Dion played btw more than 700 shows (A New Day...) from March 2003 to December 2007 in Las Vegas.

It was already mentioned in the 1st Post: [www.iorr.org] .... the rest was only for comparison.

Pretty impressive even though I'm not a fan of their music. I grew up in Sayreville, NJ and was in the same gym class as Jon; we never really knew each other. He seemed like a regular kid.

Nonsense. According to Wikipedia three arena shows in former Brendan Byrne Arena in late 2005 + three in Giants Stadium the following July.

Regards Rolling Stones stadium shows...in London area.
Folks have mentioned The Astoria,Wembley Arena and The 02 Arena.
These are not stadiums...Wembley Stadium and Twickenham are stadiums.
Wembley Stadium record for playing there the most times on a single tour.
Take That with Robbie Williams in the line-up = 8 nights
Michael Jackson = 7 nights.

So it seems that Shea is the record for a single run at a stadium except for Tokyodome? Is Tokyodome a Stadium or an arena? How many does it hold?

Tokyo Dome is a stadium, or at least stadium sized venue. The Stones played to a total of 147,493 over 3 nights in 2014, which equates to 49,164 per show.

For STEEL WHEELS they did Shea 2 shows in a row then did the Coliseum in LA 4 shows in a row then back to Shea for 4 shows in a row.

For VOODOO they played Giants Stadium 4 shows in a row and in Oakland the same, the most for that tour.

They did 4 in a row in Mexico City and 5 in a row in Buenos Aires and 7 in a row in Tokyo in 1995.

1990 STEEL WHEELS was 10 in a row in Tokyo - it was during that stretch that Terrifying was released as a single.

The 1989-90 tours clearly had the most demand ie the peak of all Stones tours with a plethora of multiple shows in cities, with LA and NYC demanding the most. No tour since has had as many multiple shows in cities - and it looks like Oakland has taken over the demand in California since 1989.

1997 they did 4 in a row in Oakland. They were smart on the BRIDGES tour to not just play stadiums.

Weird how for the 1998 European tour they didn't play England at all.

Weird how for the 1998 European tour they didn't play England at all.

It was due to Tax reasons:

"The Stones have pulled the [1998] UK dates in protest at the new Labour Government's changes to the British tax laws which now impose full taxes on the foreign-earned income of any British resident who works in the UK at all during the tax year. The band claim that the UK tax change would cost them 40 per cent (some 10 million pounds) of the tour's total earnings, putting the entire European leg into financial jeopardy."

The re-scheduled UK-dates took place in 1999: [news.bbc.co.uk] , [www.iorr.org] .

Oh, right. I forgot about that. What a load! Obviously a good decision for them to not play there. Just because they played in Europe... how bizarre.

This is correct; 10 shows at Giants Stadium in July-August 03;
The 3 shows at Shea were in October.
Between the 2 he also did 3 in Philly and a couple in Hartford;
that's a total of 18 stadium shows within a 150 mile radius of NYC within a 4 month period.
