O/T Beck at the Albert Hall, Manchester. Wednesday 29th June, 2016.

Hello,

Prior to the headliner appearing, Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy played a 30 minute support set which went down well. He left us in no doubt as to how utterly pissed-off he is at the result of last week's referendum too...blimey!

At about 9.10pm Beck and his band climbed-up onstage to a literally deafening ovation from the 2000 punters: he seemed a little taken aback by the noise, if not the love!

They steamed straight into 'Devil's Haircut' and everyone was up and on the good foot...such an infectious number...he kept the involvement going through 'Loser'. Talk about a sing-along...

He slowed it down a tad with a few more mellow numbers but the home straight saw the roof lift: I'm not joking!

The band intros were a work of genius as each specialist got to showcase their talent solo initially before everyone joined in on riotous covers of the likes of 'Good Times', 'China Girl' and '1999'. One of those shows that you wished would go on for a bit longer.

On the way to the show I was listening to Steve Lurpack and coincidentally he played a short interview between himself and Beck from Glastonbury. The Wee Man said that he has so many songs written that he has an LP that was ready TWO years ago that he hasn't put out because he's been busy, busy , busy...he is in that 'prolific' category for sure.

I hope that he sticks around for a while yet...and plays a few more live shows 'cos they are a tonic! He displays a little humour, warmth and joy...is that not soul?

Devil's Haircut
Black Tambourine
Loser
Ghettochip Malfunction
Mixed Bizness
Qué Onda Güero
The New Pollution
Go It Alone
Jack-Ass
Think I'm in Love (with 'I Feel Love' snippet)

Encore:

Where It's At / One Foot in the Grave

Photos ain't the greatest due in no small part to sad efforts at dancing- it was impossible to sit still even for this rhythmically-challenged bloke, hah-hah!

Cheers,

Simon.

I love the guy but his set lists change less than the Stones. He needs to put out that new album soon.

Thanks for the review - missed out on the gig tonight...but saw him at Hyde Park supporting The Strokes.
He, and the band, were fantastic there so must have been great at The Albert Hall.
Cheers

Have seen Beck in concert 3x, and have most of his albums. I'll catch hell here for this, but I also think he's a musical genius. Honestly, I feel he is the modern day Bob Dylan the way he is constantly reinventing himself and the lyricism he brings to his music. Truly an extraordinary talent. He can do it all. Glad he's brought back Loser, as I know he stopped playing it for quite awhile - indeed I've only seen it performed live once.

He is brilliant! I liken him more though to an American David Bowie. Very eclectic, and inspired to take risks with his music. And he's a skinny blond boy too.

Saw him open for the Stones in 2005 in Toronto. He and his band were amazing. Still hoping over a decade later to catch him again.

I guess I could see that too whitem8. Hadn't really ever thought of that comparison, but now that you mention it, I can see it.

He is a big fan of Bowie, and has covered a few of his songs through the years. He does an interesting version of Sound and Vison with his father directing an orchestra.
