Some more of that bay area counterculture the boys tried to capture at both Hyde Park and Altamont.

These Brando wannabes never did anything for me and after seeing "GS" I just felt utter contempt for these "men" and their "code" of honor.

I still can't see $%^&*ing videos, but maybe other people can. This is a well-known film clip of Chocolate George's memorial in the Panhandle of Golden Gate Park. Many stories and legends around that day.

Always supported Sam Cutlers story about Altamont. The free bad drugs handed out during the day trace back to Nixon-Agnew-Hoover. This was done during prohibition also.
The bastards!!

OMGs means Outlaw Motorcycle Groups, that's what the Angels are. I wouldn't want anything to do with any of those kinds of gangs.

Murderers and thugs that contribute squat to society. About as useful to society as a certain real estate megalomaniac that has been receiving a lot of press lately.

A bunch of guys who like to wear leather and never fight 1 on 1.

You would have to pay me alot to walk through my local mall looking like that just once, and these assclowns walk around like that 24-7.

This article asks the reader "Don't you wish you could have been there that day?"
Say no and your nuts!

Greetings!

Thanks for the invite slakka!

Here is an intro to my pop's....Chocolate George. He strolls @ 2:49 with his wife Layla.

When you are talking about the Angels from the day..... you aren't talking about the same group as now.

Know stanlove that fighting 1 on 1 was totally acceptable back then.
And the way they dress is to elicit your type reaction. They by far didn't want to be "norm" they wanted to shock you with their non-conformity. I can't speak for the present day club. Keep in mind that my Dad stepped out in the "Summer of Love" 1967.

A simple search using the terms "Hell's Angel Chocolate George" will uncover a man that was much loved and respected. Shocking again I am sure. He died 49 years ago and I still find new postings regarding him to this day, none of them negative.

Here is a picture of Dad and his best friend "Hairy Henry" at the Smithsonian. Hank was a good family friend. After my Dad died he and his wife used to come take me to the zoo and such. These men have families and are more mainstream than people imagine.... at least back then.

Harry Henry's Jacket
The contributer, Roz Cot... was Hanks Mom.

Janis Joplin's final wishes were influenced by my Dad's "Wail" as mentioned at the end of this article.

Janis Joplin

There is too much to list. One of my favorite pictures of him for sale at "Wolfgang's Vault" mine is signed by the photographer Gene Anthony.
Chocolate George is a part of the history of San Francisco, and more over a part of our history from the 60's.

Wolfgan's Vault

Sonny was good friends with Jerry before the club was formed...their history together started from the beginnings.

There are several cuts of the day on the net, this isn't my favorite but perhaps the best quality one.

The Dead

I tend to be very candid. Feel free to ask any questions you may have and I'll answer to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks for letting me post on your thread. smiling smiley

Note the carton of Chocolate Milk between his legs. "Chocolate George" got his name from Chocolate Milk...he was seldom seen without. Dad had stomach ulcers and chocolate milk helped.....

Great post Beth,
Wonderful job you've done researching your dad.

I still don't understand why they were here in Altamont in 1969.
Were they asked to come or did they impose themselves with their legendary agressivity ?

I also read that it was Mick Jagger who wanted the Hells A...... to take care of the security ?

there is lots of confusion.

there is lots of confusion.

First and foremost, they were mainstays in the Bay Area scene. From the very beginnings from the acid trips and Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, in 1964-65. They were from the Bay Area. They were more or less the same age. They also believed in personal freedom, autonomy, unorthodoxy. They liked to party. They liked music and dancing. They liked being around fun chicks. They were not of the "Establishment." And some of them were seen by some in the scene as rough around the edges, and sometimes scary and/or obnoxious, and/or exciting and fun, adventuresome, funny, warm, interesting, tough, wise, and different. HAs had friendships and relationships with the bands themselves -- some of people at the center of the music, theatre, art, fashion, film, literary, dance, and just general open-ended social scenes grew up together in the same neighborhoods, went through school with, HAs. They threw and sponsored their own parties and dances that young, hip, unconventional San Franciscan attended. It wasn't seen as Us VS. Them. Or even Us and Them. They were an entity unto themselves, to be sure. But they were also considered to one part of a broad, confederated identity of the "Us" at that time.

That's the short answer.
