Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time', Dead at 74

Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesperson confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson's Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity. A funeral service is planned in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Even as his health declined, Ali did not shy from politics or controversy, releasing a statement in December criticizing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States. "We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda," he said.

The remark bookended the life of a man who burst into the national consciousness in the early 1960s, when as a young heavyweight champion he converted to Islam and refused to serve in the Vietnam War, and became an emblem of strength, eloquence, conscience and courage. Ali was an anti-establishment showman who transcended borders and barriers, race and religion. His fights against other men became spectacles, but he embodied much greater battles.

Ali was my first HERO! I was 9 and I used to watch his boxing matches with my Dad, who was a boxer in the Navy. He was Cassius Clay then. I remember him winning Olympic Gold. There will never be another like him. Parkinson's Disease is hideous and really, more money needs to be pumped into finding a cure for this disease.
He was a man who stood by his beliefs even when faced with stiff opposition. He would NOT fight in Vietnam for damn good reasons. It was against his religious beliefs and for that he lost his title and served time. That sentence took 3 years away from his boxing career but he was determined to reclain his title....and he did in 1974 beating Foreman. I could go on and on but I'll end by saying this took a piece of my heart. Rest in peace, Muhammad Ali, you don't have to fight anymore.sad smiley

He was such a huge personality. It was hard to see that mental quickness dimmed as a side effect of the very thing that brought him fame in the first place. He even inspired a hit song in the '70s, Black Superman. He was one of a kind.

CNN is showing a special tribute/report right now...RIP

"I´ll come back in a rose-pink Cadillac on Kentucky Derby Day".

And that´s what he did.

Some smart blokes were eager to pick up on that.

On Thursday we were at the famous boxing cellar "Ritze" in
Hamburg St. Pauli´s Reeperbahn. In one corner there was this
poster, originally signed by Ali when he visited the cellar
decades ago.
The Greatest:

My father always woke me up in the middle of the night: "Come on,
boy, Ali is boxing!"
