Stones' Greatest Hits - 1 CD / 20 song limit
Posted by: stonesstein ()
Date: June 3, 2016 15:41

All Stones' officially-released music is open for inclusion from 1963 - 2016, including the Vaults' stuff and live stuff like Sticky Live 2015.

You are limited to 20 songs, regardless of length, so this is not a 74 minute thing.

Feel free to give reasons for why this and not that. Chart positions can, but need not, be a factor. They can be in any order, as inclusion, not order is important.

I am simply looking for each of you to pare the catalogue down to what you think are the Rolling Stones' 20 greatest tracks.

Here goes:

1. Route 66 (Live) (from Got Live EP)
2. Satisfaction
3. 19th Nervous Breakdown
4. 2000 Light Years From Home
5. Jumping Jack Flash
6. Sympathy for the Devil
7. Street Fighting Man
8. Live With Me (Live from Ya Yas)
9. Gimme Shelter
10. Honky Tonk Women
11. Brown Sugar (w/ Eric Clapton)
12. Let It Rock (Live at Leeds)
13. Rocks Off
14. I Just Wanna See His Face
15. Sweet Virginia
16. Midnight Rambler (Live at Brussels)
17. Starf--cker
18. Respectable
19. Back of My Hand
20. Rough Justice

WOW - SEVERAL anthems / warhorses missing, I know. No Rooster, Paint It, Black, LSTNT, Ruby, Miss You, Start me Up, Tumbling Dice, Angie, IORR, and yes, 13 are from 1968-1973, and only 2 tracks are after 78, with only 3 after 73.

I expect criticism from many, but if it gets y'all talking, then oh well......

i agree the stones are too good to only consider 20 songs for inclusion but the thread topic is about what we think is the best 20 songs the stones did do, so any left out song didnt make the grade on merit. it would also be good if someone could count the final score and give us the ultimate iorr top 20.

on a survey i came across on the web of the top 50 stones songs beast of burden was no6 and you cant always get was no1. cant see why.

so heres my top 20, which i could contradict tomorrow.

1. she said yeah
2. the last time
3. paint it black
4. ruby tuesday
5. cool calm collected
6. we love you
7. citadel
8. jumpin jack flash
9. no expectations
10.jigsaw puzzle
11. gimme shelter
12. brown sugar
13. let it loose
14. silver train(old grey whistle test youtube version)
15. if you cant rock me(alterate outtake youtube version)
16. shattered(live hampton 1981 version)
17. little t and a(live hampton 1981 version)
18. she was hot
19. like a rolling stone
20. sympathy for the devil(love you live version) as an encore.

i tried to include many of the criteria that made the stones during the brian jones era, so i included songs which show his talent of playing multi instruments and also to include the early r and b rythmns with jagger at his menacing best, and the pysychodelic era, which includes both these features, i moved on to the best ballad i think they did no expectations then to songs recorded during thier greatest era, laterly i included my favourite rock songs from the 70,s and beyond also including the excellent let it loose with jaggers vocals at his best ever in many opinions.

to be honest, its so difficult to pick a top 20, bit would be interesting to see a final result.

Impressive collection but you omitted the early years and payed no attention to their post-Undercover material. Most of all I miss One Hit To The Body of course. Just as well as Dirty Work, Winning Ugly & Had It With You.

I´ll present my own collection later on. 20 songs only - not an easy task. Almost mission impossible.

That's because their early years don't have the musical impact of what I put in and anything post-UNDERCOVER is not worthy with possible exception to You Don't Have To Mean It and How Can I Stop, for which there was not enough room for and have no historical impact regarding how they sound. Including anything from DIRTY WORK is a detriment to their career and is zero representation of The Rolling Stones.

I'm trying to make sense of some of the diverse suggestions made here.

Compilation chat is always compelling, but what are we being asked to produce here?

The 20 songs we feel had the most commercial success?

The ones which had the most critical success?

Simply our personal favourites?

Perhaps the last criteria accounts for some of the tracks included above.

.....

Obviously, the lists are not greatest hits, but personal favourites.
Here is the band's real greatest hits, UK and US top 3 singles, covered up by 4 tracks treated by both band and public as if they were big hits:

Not Fade Away UK #3
It's All Over Now UK #1
Little Red Rooster UK #1
The Last Time UK #1
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction UK and US #1
Get Off Of My Cloud UK and US #1
19th Nervous Breakdown US #2
Paint It Black UK and US #1
Ruby Tuesday US #1
Let's Spend The Night Together UK #3
Jumping Jack Flash UK #1
Honky Tonk Women UK and US #1
Brown Sugar US #1
Angie US #1
Miss You US #1
Emotional Rescue US #3
Start Me Up US #2

And then you can add the 4 extra songs:

Sympathy For The Devil
Gimme Shelter
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Tumbling Dice

Thanks Blueranger.
So the last #1 was Miss You in the US (#3 in the UK), and Start Me Up made it to #2 in the US (#7 in the UK).
That was a loooong time ago....nothing after that made it to #1 or 2?
I'm not really surprised I guess given the output after that.....

*On another note, Honkey Tonk Women was their last #1 in the UK?!!! eye popping smiley

All the lists above are missing something. Any stones greatest hits compilation
Released over the past 40 years has included new or unreleased
Songs. This is to entice diehard fans (us) by the album even though we all already have 17 different albums with satisfaction, JJF etc on it.

So really the question is what 18 greatest hits plus two previously unreleased tracks should be on the hypothetical album.

When I came up with this idea, it was more of a what 20 songs would you select as the Stones' greatest recorded moments? That, and a vague idea that you would thus use this 2LP set or CD to introduce those who might not know the band as well to what you believe are the best 20 trax they ever did. It does not matter if the song was a hit or even released as a single. What matters is that the song(s) you select are more than simply personal favorites; rather, they are the 20 songs which together you believe best capture the Rolling Stones as we know and love them.

It IS a version of mission impossible, but it is really cool to read everyone's choices.

Thanks for playing.....
