At the ripe old age of 16 in the year 1999 the barefoot Johnny Lang tore it up for The No Security tour in KC.

Kravtz,Pretenders and No Doubt was ok

No one has mentioned Ike & Tina Turner.
Neville Bros in 81 were incredible.
I have to say that since then the openers that I have seen have ekther sucked outright, or fell victim to inferior sound systems, provided by the Stones. On all late-era tours the openers sounded like mud, and then the Stones would come out and sound like gold. Except in ( I think) 2002 there was No Doubt, where Glen Stefani rose above it all.

The Nevile Brothers in Chicago November of 81.

I suspect the Stones had very little input on openers for the Zip code tour.
Maybe nowadays the choice is all controlled by the promoter?
