Have a look at the picture below. Difficult to say there is no intention to touch the ball with his hand.
Don't forget to look at Giroud's funny face on the left.

It was a dubious decision anyway, JP. And it settled the game. I understand, of course, that you are partial here. Nothing wrong with that. I'm neither German nor French. I think it was a doubtful penalty.
Kind of sad to have a game decided by it. But that's the way it goes sometimes. Yesterday France was on the lucky side. It could have been the other way around.

Re: OT: EURO 2016 - Prediction game and chat

How can it be dubious? A deliberate hands.

It was decisive indeed. The germans were having a party in the first half, until that incident.

no Stoneage I don't agree with you. I'm not partial even if I'm French. The picture is not mine. You can easily see that Schweini stretched his arm to the ball and not the contrary so the rule is clear, it's penalty.

Don't forget there was a second goal on a French attack and I don't think that Neuer has to be blamed.

On another note I think Schweinsteiger is one of the most overrated players in modern football. I have never considered him a star.
And what did he add in this tournament? A missed penalty and a decisive penalty for the French...

Why do German players stretch their arms above their heads when jumping in the air?
Boateng and Schweinsteiger both made the same mistake. Have they been playing volleyball lately?

The second French goal came due to the fact that the Germans had to push forward for the equalizer. The penaly in the 47th minute in the first half decided the game.

Anyway, it's history now. The Germans had 48 minutes to do something about it in the second half. But didn't manage to. They seem to lack strikers.
France should be clear favorites in the final. But look out for Ronaldo and that 18 year old kid!

The hands call is so similar to what Boateng did against Italy. It sure makes you wonder how they could do that two straight games. That's going to be called.

well Portugal's coach probably knows the blackboard below :
France has always defeated Portugal in official competition except in 1996.

Portugal will be the overwhelming underdog of course.

Portugal defeated Germany in 2000 in competitive matches but otherwise haven't fared that well either.

Portugal were embarrassed in 2014 vs. Germany, losing 4-0.

[us.soccerway.com]

But that loss started off with some sort of red card given to Pepe. Pepe would claim the German attacker dramatized his fall.

I think in yesterday's game, there are some cases where it appears the German players went down easy. I may be wrong but if folks are being critical of that penalty before half time, one might remember that.

---------------------

General comment:

Croatia was probably a better team vs. Portugal, Portugal won.

England probably lost some shootouts, '90, '96, '06. At least in one of those, England may have been the better team. That is why they have shootouts, because no one proved themselves better per the score board.

We've got the Poland Switzerland game where yes, Switzerland probably became the better team on the pitch but that was settled by penalties.

JPasc95: I know France has produced many great footballers; but sometimes people still say France is more of a rugby nation. Is that so?

Re: OT: EURO 2016 - Prediction game and chat
Posted by: jpasc95 ()

BW : if you talk about football clubs, sure we're not the best, I easily admit it. England, Italy, Spain are much better. Only Marseille won the champions league (1993).
The national French team is also behind Germany and Italy in terms of prize list.
We won the world cup only once and euro twice (maybe 3 on sunday).
It's not that bad anyway.

yes French rugby clubs have better results but England is ahead, clubs and national team included. England is number 1 in Europe and already won the world cup while France never did. France is number 2 maybe.

so, difficult to answer if France is more of a rugby nation than soccer.
Soccer is still more popular than rugby in France.

And I hope that finally someone puts Portugal in their right place, i.e. whipping them and them cover them with salt! How does a team dare to come to a tournament and think more about the results then the exibithion on the pitch! How do they dare!!!

It would be a travesty if a team that has performed like Portugal has, actually wins the title. I hope France wins. They have played with spirit.
And yes - WTF is it with the Germans and the hands? Boateng was bad enough. You'd think that the first thing Low does is to schedule an emergency training session devoted only to never again jumping up with your arms raised.
And then next game...wait a minute: wasn't Boateng captain the day he did it? And then Schweinsteiger too. Hmm..

Germany was missing goalscorers on the team.

If you look at the bundes-league top-scorers, does Germany have an issue with "too many foreign attackers / forwards" and therefore not good enough German attackers? Thomas Muller is the only one......

Agreed. They never replaced Klose. Mueller isn't a true #9. He can score when he has a tank in front of him; like Gomez was. I thought that the raw player talent is probably there, but Low seems to not favor that position. Schuerrle IMo could be slotted there. He has that instinct. Ozil and Goetze are midfielders.

Every tournament, I go to the Portugoal website, fans of Portugal.

Big underdogs but I'll be cheering them on.

Per Portugal vs. France, head to head;

in '06, France win in World Cup, in '00 France win in extra time, 117th minute 2-1 in Euro; '84, France won in the Euro vs. Portugal. The two teams have drawn one time.

in 2006, we lost against Italy in final (on penalties).
we won the world cup in 1998
we won the euro in 1984 and 2000.

no enough is not enough !
we want a third title so let's go France !!!

As an outsider here it doesn't matter to me which team wins. But since Portugal is the underdog here and has never won the EC (or the WC) I will root for them somewhat.
And they have a revenge to claim since that strange loss to Greece in the 2004 final. On the other hand I understand how important it is for France to win on homeground.
In a way I think the French nation longs for that triumph. So...

France defeated Portugal in 2006, in 2000 and 1984 in big tournament games, maybe I did not make that clear. In the knockout rounds of those tournaments.

I said France win in world cup, I did not say France win the world cup for 2006; I should have made it clearer I was talking about against Portugal.

Portugal's had it tough, they had a very good team in '66 too with Eusebio; so though I'm fairly neutral; I don't like seeing a team always lose.

It's hard to see Portugal winning though; it's just a shame to always see them lose and then, they have not even made many of these big trophy tournaments until recently.

Sort of like Netherlands, they are often there in the advanced stages of the tournament but often don't win, I know they did win one Euro; '88 I think.
