The Eight Songs That MUST Be Played Every Night!!!

Satisfaction
JJFlash
Street Fighting Man
Sympathy
Honky Tonk
Gimmie Shelter
Midnight Rambler
Brown Sugar

The other warhorses need to be played on a rotating basis. Play TD one night then drop it the next and play IORR in its place. Make room in the set for something else! Shit, I wouldn't even mind losing one or two of the above mentioned eight if they would play something INTERESTING in its place.

SURPRISE US!!!

I agree and they can also make them shorter to leave more room.

NO, none of those have to be played every night. They just happen to be your personal favourites, (I presume).

All WH should be done on rotation basis.

IMO

Gimmie Shelter and Midnight Rambler has done thier time

Street Fighting man and Symapthy could be argued about
The rest should be in the setlist

Can't wait hear an arena show
Then you could get away with more

Okay. I'm going to agree with that. There's nothing wrong with holding a little something back that everyone wants and expects. Give the people just enough of what they want to make them want to come back next time. If people leave thinking "Hey, they didn't do Satisfaction! I really wanted to hear that!" it's more likely they will buy a ticket next time in hopes that maybe THIS time they'll do it.

Personally I could deal without all of them except MR, this is (still) a live killer
; ban miss you 2 but I think for the bigger audiences satisfaction, brown sugar and jjf are almost must haves...

I always hope that they play Paint It Black and Gimme Shelter.

I agree, but would like to add Tumblin Dice as well. It is a great song and it shines every time. It's the essence of the stones. It's Keith's favorite song to play I think he's said, and Ronnie seems to like his solo as we'll, Mick always sings it well and last time I saw them play it in copenhagen, Charlie banged his drums so hard on that song that he let go of one of his drumsticks, only to catch it amazingly and not even miss a beat!

Anyway, in that same concert the way they played Midnight Rambler..... it was beyond words, just amazing. The highlight of my musical life by far!! I can't imagine a show without it now...

Well, I don't go to a concert thinking.."I must have....."

I want to be surprised, A degree of Anticipation would be nice instead of an air of inevitability.

I'm more inclined to go to a concert with a "musn't have" attitude! I could happily live without all the above WH and others. If I knew I was going to get a set of 22 numbers that I'd never heard live before THAT is when I'd be prepared to pay $400 for a stadium ticket.

But that's unrealistic because, I suppose, the 'must have' people are the dominant market force and the Stones are too lazy to change things up radically.

I really don't think any must be played every night. But, if I were going to my first show (as many are), I'd want to hear most of the warhorses. The band didn't play "Satisfaction", their biggest and best known hit on many tours. Why is "Dice" required every night? Ditto "Miss You" and (I know I'm asking for it) "Sympathy".

Before ( when I was young) I did wonder why they played Tumbling Dice every time, but now I love to hear them doing it and see how they play it and all can see how much Keith love to play the song. He is dancing with the guitar.

Satisfaction - ...
JJF - ...
SFTD - takes its men to make itself justice
Honky Tonk - if they play like at Brussels Affairs, back in 73...
GS - at times with Keith on the vocals
MR - See SFTD
BC - if played like in PC or as in the good ol days
She´s So Cold - ...
A Berry cover - thoroughly chosen

And, a ninth one; Shine A Light - with gospel spirit!!!

Not:
Beast Of Burden
YGMR
BOMH - unless they can adapt it to larger venues
SMU - Time to retire

Yes, perhaps 'Must Haves' should include at least one Berry rocker.

And Then one or two Blues originals

A soul or Reggae cover by all means.

AND one of the following sixties hits, (rotated)

Mother Baby
Nervous Breakdown
Last Time
It's All Over Now
We Love You

and then something from the 66-67 album period, (rotated)

and so on........something from Undercover. Something from DW/SW.

One Keith song

The new songs

yes, and four or five standard WH (rotated)

WOW ......a Stones' concert could be something to really look forward to.

Time to wake up now!

Dont agree that theres ANY song that MUST be played every night. Other major artists dont necessarily do that, and their shows dont suffer for it because they can change things around and keep it fresh

This band has been around 43 years, have released almost 350 different songs, many of them justifiably regarded as classics, have played to more people than any band in history and sold a couple of hundred million records....

yet they still feel obliged to devote half a show to songs that theyve played to death BECAUSE there is a sizeable section of the people who come to see them who are too LAZY to look beyond the greatest hits section of their back catalogue

Theres something wrong with this picture.

I dont buy this argument that many people in the audience are seeing the band for the first time and so they (justifiably if it were true) expect a greatest hits show.

The band's demographic is getting older and, with the prices they charge for tickets, are obviously reasonably affluent. They've toured regularly for the last decade and a half. Pretty much everyone in that time who's wanted to see them has had ample oppurtunity to do so, if they can afford it.

I doubt that many people going to this tour are first timers. Therefore, the audiences are mostly consisted of people who went to see them on previous tours and enjoyed it sufficiently to come back for more.

If the shows were obviously so enjoyable, why cant these people bother their asses to buy some of their albums in the ensuing 2-3 years since they last saw them and get to know their back catalogue a bit? Why should the band feel obliged to cater for part-time fans? Why should the setlists become less interesting for the rest of us as a result? Surely the Stones themselves would rather play a song that they havent flogged to death over the years than something like Honky Tonk Women or IORR?

Time the band let their art speak for itself and basically say "never mind this 'play something we know' mentality - the onus is on the audience to "know what we play".

YCAGWYW is another signature song if you think there should be an "every night" list. Street Fighting Man and Midnight Rambler don't belong on the list, although I hope to hear them both Friday night. The real must play list is:

Jumping Jack Flash
Sympathy for the Devil
You Can't Alway's Get What You Want
Gimme Shelter

Instead of Satisfaction,I'd rather hear any one of the following: 19th Nervous Breakdown, The Last Time, Under My Thumb, Get Off My Cloud, Mother's Little Helper, and Have You Seen Your Mother Baby (Standing in the Shadow)

MIck has been quoted more than once making his position very clear. He says in the club shows the fans know the obscure songs, but the large stadium audiences only want to hear the familiar songs. End of story. They'll throw in a couple of album cuts at the arena shows, and that's all we get.

Good Point B'n'B

I couldn't even think how many times they have played the warhorses over the years!!!

How much excitment can they put into the songs night after night?

LOL..my disgust (as ever) is aimed more at the non-fans and corporate @#$%& who we genuine fans are forced to share the same air as at a Stones concert and the fact that the band actually feel obliged to tailor a show towards these "blow-ins"

Poor Woopie Goldberg who loved the Stones show so much but still had to leave it before they played the 2nd encore IORR. She even went to the B-stage for the songs there. And she rocked all night believe me. You have the real VIP's who love the Stones for real like Woopie and Jack Nicholson and you have the socalled VIP's who just are VIP's who leave before the encores and think it was great to get rid of the queue and finally they could do something interesting.

PS. I love IORR and BS and SFM all those gems every time they play them.

Bjornulf

I'm sure you do Bjornulf. But aren't there other songs, which you've not heard before, that you would rather hear instead, songs that would give you such a thrill and make your day/year/decade?

Why should only a priveleged handfull (who may have been largely VIPs anyway) ever get to hear "She Smiled Sweetly"?

People like Gazza, T&A, Stone Tod (and myself) have been fans for donkies years .....we who have bought all the albums and love the other (often more interesting) tracks......and all we seem to get is the usual WH.

And BOBM.......MickJ may have said that as a way to justify sticking to the usual stuff........but are you sure that isn't just an easy way out?

It would be a lot more work for them to rehears a wider catalogue and remember the words and not mess up some of the songs. I suspect that that has more to do with it.

For a new, extensive world tour they didn't seem to spend that long rehearsing in Toronto.

I enjoy most of the well-known songs too....its just that I dont want to hear the same ones take up at least half of every show I go to

You know, there's a lot to be said for a band like the Grateful Dead, inasmuch as there was not one single song that they played all the time. Even Friend Of The Devil and Truckin were trotted out only occasionally, right? But the Stones just aren't that kind of band. They come from a very different show business tradion and have a very different idea of what makes a great show. Look at one of their setlists from '69. They open with JJF and the last three songs are Satisfaction, HTW and SFM. An electrifying start and a big finish. This is the way they have always done it. They come out swinging and drop you with the first punch. They hit you with the big KO shots last. This is show business. It's tradition. It's ritual. And it's as old as the hills.

I think you nailed it, tatters - they do treat it as "show business." but, some of us think it should be treated as a rock'n'roll event - rock is/was supposed to be dangerous - there's nothing dangerous in playing a bunch of songs they can play in their sleep. i think most of us would expect a better balance between the two, frankly....

A lot of it is ego. Every time they play Satisfaction or JJF or SFM they are thumping their chests and saying "You hear these songs? These are the best rock and roll songs ever written. We wrote them. This is what you paid the big bucks for. To hear and see us do these songs. No one else can do this. No one else can create a moment on stage like this. If you don't like it then you don't like us and if you don't like us then you don't like rock and roll."

Something else I wanted to add about the element of "danger" you mentioned. There was a time, 1969 to be precise, when the warhorses were new songs. In '69 most of the setlist was devoted to new material, tracks taken from Beggers, which was only a year old, and LIB which I don't even think was in the stores until after the tour ended. The only "oldies" were Satisfaction, Under My Thumb, I'm Free and Carol. That's because, and rightly so, they felt very stongly about their new material. That has happened only ONE time since. In 1978 when they went out and played almost every song on Some Girls. SG tracks made up half the setlist that year. They played SG and maybe half a dozen warhorses and not much else, because, again, rightly so, they felt very stongly about their new material. The fact that they are only doing 4 of the 16 new ones this time out is not a very good sign. Clearly, they don't feel all THAT strongly about this one.
