Ye, this was a great era for soul music up until disco (and some of that was good) and rap (not so much) took over.

Thankfully, very good soul music is making a comeback. Check out Daptone Records. A label in Brooklyn, they put out modern sou; artists like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Charles Bradley, James Hunter Six, etc.

The music did not go away, just became harder to fine, out of fashion. But making a comeback.

Amy Winehouse, was soul-light on her best days. Not my thing, but she had some of the Dap Kings in her band and was recorded by the founder of Daptone records.

When the Stones have had guest stars performing with them, I thought they should do a cover of "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" by The Dramatics. Great song, and the lyrics would be a perfect excuse to give Keith and Ronnie a rare solo turn at the mic.

It would go like this:

(GUEST STAR) Some people are made of plastic
(RONNIE) And you know some people are made of wood
(KEITH) Some people have hearts of stone
(GUEST) Some people are up to no good
(MICK) But baby I'm for real
I'm as real as real can get
(and so on) If what you're looking for is real loving
Then what you see is what you get

I always kinda felt the same about Amy Winehouse, but got hammered by some for saying so. I'll check out Daptone stuff, thanks for the tip.

One of my favorite songs of all time. In high school, Inused to listen to this oldies station every night, and I have a recording somewhere of my voice requesting this song.
This song got me into Stax, , particularly 70s Stax.
70s soul music is my idea of heaven.

You gotta see the movie "AMY." Best movie (documentary or otherwise) of last year.

Makes you appreciate her monster talent. Back to Black had a lot of Motown references in the arrangements, and clever as they were it didn't convey the feeling and raw emotion of her singing.

There is a guy on youtube; one of the guitarists who might do some clips showing others how to play this and that. He has many Stones clips; but also a lot of 60/70 Soul stuff. IMO he is the best guitarist I have ever seen on line. Not just his playing.
The problem is - I don't know his name, I don't even know his face; and comments on all of his clips are disabled. I think his camera has also gone broke, so he doesn't post anymore.
This is a wonderful cat.

Back to Black is one of the best records ever. Start to finish.

I found this collection discounted on Amazon a few years back. One of the best purchases I've ever made...

What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977)

Apparently, someone has also put it up as a playlist on YouTube:

Note: Ananda Shankar's version of Jumpin' Jack Flash is NOT one of my favorites. Interesting? OK, I'll give it that. But not much more.

Peace,
Mr DJA

Check out a band called Fat Night on YouTube. All original soul/funk with strong 70s influence.

Eddie Hinton - he barely got one in during 70's because that was his lost decade.
Rockman would love this cat.

I knew it. Every time I listen to him, it makes me think of you.
I just love this guy. The whole Muscle Shoals/ Wexler/ Stax behind the scene band is so insanely beautiful. IMO these are the best ever. And I believe Keith, and Taylor and Ron learned from the best.

Not saying Amy Winehouse sucked by any means, just that her version of 'soul' is light/poppy. I am sure she had some talent.

Soul music really jumped on the funk wagon in the 70s, but that doesn't mean it wasn't still good.

Here's one of my favourites from the 70s:

The 70s were the best era four soul music IMO. I love 70s soul. Al Green, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The Delfonics, Gaye, Isaac Hayes...man. It doesn't get much better.

Talk about a coincidence, for some reason this morning I had the urge to make a playlist of Stevie Wonder Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs in the Key of Life. Talk about a stretch of albums. Also listened to What's Going On on the way to work. Listening to music like this really makes be depressed about the current state of r&b/soul music, and music in general. F man! Stevie played almost every instrument on most of these songs and what do we have today? Fn producer driven autotune crap. I try hard to play the classics for my kids and sometimes they get it. My 10 year old daughter, the hardest critic in the house, started grooving to Superstition this morning, hard not to. I said you wanna see something unreal and showed her uptight/satisfaction from 72. Mind blown for the moment and then she went back to listening to her crap. Oh well the small victories.

Awwww that's kinda crazy Palace ... Hope it doesn't end up a nightmare hhhaaaaa
But I always think of Hinton as the white version of James Carr .... both troubled.. tortured souls ..

And hey for good deep 70's soul track try Thomas Bailey's - Wish I Was Back
