OP: (not political) What's with Trump and these Stones songs?
Posted by: stupidguy2 ()
Date: May 3, 2016 02:12

Start Me Up used at victory rallies, and now as I'm watching CNN, You Can't Always Get What You Want at another rally.
I know some artists would deny him the use of their music, or at least make a statement, but what is this?
And before the mods delete this, this is not meant to be political, just curious.

Depends, are they getting public performance royalties? If yes, then I don't see what the problem is. They aren't really into American politics outside of their few Clinton related events....the Beacon and free Staples Center show. Outside of those I believe they are basically apolitical. And let's be honest, if Mick were an American he'd be a republican. He's said some extremely positive things about Margaret Thatcher.

CNN did a segment yesterday with the writer of The Sun, the Moon, and The Rolling Stones. This focused on how many times politicians use songs and don't realize what the lyrics are saying on the songs. Like Trump playing Brown Sugar before a press conference "the song is about slavery and heroine." Classic.

I think it's a rather odd choice for a candidate to pick Start me up. So the candidate
is waiting for the voters to start him to do something?

Did any candidate ever chose "Hold on, I'm coming"? I guess that would be my choice.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Trump's core constituency are boomers who have grown up listening to these songs.
We see these songs as works of art, to most of the public rock is just muzak -- something you hear at the grocery store or waiting at the dentist office.

Perhaps the line "You make a grown man cry" makes some sense?

seems your making a lot of assumptions ... is it possible Stones gave permission? Is it possible Stones support Trump? I have no idea, but it seems you are so sure of otherwise.

You think that was an accident on Trump's part?

Whipping black women for sport is right up his constituents' alley.

The Stones's spokesperson already stated earlier in the campaign that they don't give Trump permission to use their songs.

this is so true-that is such a boomer thing, caring about what a song "means".
the post WW2 generation takes music way to seriously, the ones who came before and after couldn't give a toss.

does it have a good beat? can you dance to it?,great.the reverence and respect given to a bunch of stoned musicians is pretty laughable when you think about it.

A little history lesson for you. Bob Dylan changed music and after him lyrics did matter.

Okay then does that imply they refused permission? Also, is it necessary for him to get permission? Seems if it is, and he does it anyway, would there not be some type of legal grounds, a lawsuit perhaps?

Can't they just give him "Winning Ugly" for free to use whenever he likes to settle this "affair"?

If I recall correctly, what the Stones' spokesperson said was that Trump had not asked permission.
There was already a thread about this and I posted a couple of links that spelled out the legalities ... hang on ...

What if the organizers are playing a radio station and a Stones (or any other) song comes on? Is that OK? I mean where do you draw the line? Some guy out in the crowd starts blasting their Boombox and YCAGWYW comes on!smoking smiley

yes i loved Dylans lyrics in the Caddilac Escalade ad and the Apple ad,they were so meaningful to me.it really changed the way modern society thinks about music.
This is such a joke issue,if Trump pulled out his checkbook the Stones or any of the others would give in as soon as the price was right.the only "ethical issue" they have is that they didnt get paid.
instead the campaigns just says "o.k. some musician doesn't like our politics-[meaning they didnt get paid] change the song on the next stop"

Trump mentions the Stones playing his casino in one of his books (I just jumped to that section in a bookstore) and he says the Stones were jealous that the press were more interested in Trump (yeah, RIGHT!) and how "Mick Jagger gave me a fake smile."

It's odd because they all seem to hate Trump. I'm surprised there hasn't been a cease and desist.
