I do like listening now and then to the Goats Head Soup album in it's entirety, It's only in that context that I can enjoy Jagger's mildly self-indulgent singing on 'Winter.' As I stated before in this thread, I personally prefer just listening to the music on it (even though keith Richards is not playing on it).

I'm glad you like the photos.

Imagine a whole different Goats Head Soup with songs that were recorded in the GHS sessions and not used on the album. "Tops", "Separately", "Waiting on a Friend", "Brown Leaves", "Through The Lonely Nights" to name a few to consider.

I never loved "Can You Hear the Music." I could imagine "Tops" and "Through the Lonely Nights" to take the place of "Can You Hear the Music."

I have to totally agree with Drewmaster... I couldn't describe this track any better... it is a beautiful ballad on a lovely mellow album... I love it!

To really appreciate the song, try and isolate the music from the vocals...
The vocals and Mick's performance is fantastic, one of his best, least mannered, and MT's solo is gorgeous, but listen carefully to the piano and orchestration during the solo and to the end. There's also a little guitar lick that is looping around this part. The piano and strings are swirling around each other and its heavenly. The music sounds romantic and that doesn't always happen. It's perfect. If I had to choose, I'd pick this over Moonlight Mile..as epic as ML is, it has that hazy, slightly stoned feel...like a dream. Winter sounds wide awake and in love.
And this line: 'Sometimes I wanna ...light a candle for ya..'

One of the great Stones ballads from 70's; with a beautiful vocal by Jagger, and one of those Taylor guitar performances where you feel like he could easily go on for another 10 minutes, and not get boring. ( Which he does on the Carla Olsen versions).
I can' t compare this with 'Moonlight Mile' because IMO they are not in same category. "Winter" has some Country in it, some California, the vocaL IS soulful.
'Moonlight Mile' to me is very British; it is stately, majestic and cold; gorgeous. The haunting outro leaves me lonely; whereas 'Winter' leaves me way more fulfilled.

Micks are the highlights here ... Agree on Mick's vocals, simply beautiful, and to me, great lyrics! And of course it doesn't compare to Moonlight Mile but still Mick Taylor is great on it nonetheless.

My friend remembers a version of Winter with different vocals. Does anyone know of this version and where to find it. Thank you.

You can always hear Mick Taylor tear it upon the Carla Olsen live versions. He will go on for over 12 minutes. As beautiful as the song itself is, it needs Mick Jagger to bring it home. No one can touch his lead vocals on this one.
Exile, maybe what your friend is talking about id "Blood Red Wine"; that's the one that is often quoted as precursor to 'Winter".

That is not the Stones though; starts with Stones but then the late Taylor solo career version is spliced.
