MisterDDDD

The Stones have a very cool litho set (12 x 12's) of their tongue designs (excluding tour designs) on their site...

The 16 tongues are now available separately - $50 each ....

Hello all,
I have been looking at all of the many tongue variations recently and was just wondering what all of your favorite designs were. Mine, personally, is either 40 Licks or the original.

Excellent piece of art.

Can't beat the original but I do love the Voodoo Lounge spiky tongue as well.

For some reason I like the Steel Wheels era tongues. The white shirt with all the tongues (Andy Warhol patterned) from the tour I still have and wear and hasn't been matched IMHO.

which is THE iconic design. Aside from the first two, hard to pick.

Voodoo Lounge spikey tongue seemed like the first really massive departure, so I like that.

I also like the one used on the pink 45 sleeves from the 70s, but that is almost unrecognizable as a Stones tongue.

I kinda like the No Filter design. It fits well into the concept and looks up-to-date.

Many great ones and hard to pick the "best". Don't remember where I found this, but it would look cool on a t-shirt or a poster.

I really love the PINK PRICK TONGUE which was used for promotion for IT'S ONLY ROCK 'N ROLL in 1974.

As shown elsewhere in this thread... but with the original (UK edition) first.

The second one is what seems to be known as 'the new tongue' and is THE tongue that 'everyone' knows. They used the original, albeit slightly altered, on EMOTIONAL RESCUE and for some of the UNDERCOVER singles.

The ER LP and single with the original tongue is on page 3 of this now combined thread but here's UOTN.

also have liked the frozen She's So Cold tongue. Got it on a Tee.

Logos for LPs and one unique one for a single that are different:

The logo used on the label for the UK record is the red and white one that is on a majority of releases...

The US record has one closer to the 'new' logo on it that was featured on some releases...

I like this second, definitive one the best.

The teeth are a bit more defined and there's a shadow on the tongue under the teeth, as opposed to the first design.

In retrospect, the Stones have to thank Craig Braun, diMiceli an Valez for this one. Excellent team work, given the very difficult circumstances at the time (late 1970 to early 1971) spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Correction: Craig Braun/Ernie Cefalu. Criag owned the company, Ernie drew it.

WRONG.

Why these ignorant myths keep getting gurgitated is mind boggling.

Ernie had ZERO to do with the original logo. Craig Braun's team edited the original, which was designed by John Pasche, all of which has been documented. Ernie Cefalu had NOTHING to do with the logo.

Ernie did his version later strictly for merchandise.

You are absolutely right GLS! Even the stories about "Ernie's" logo have been uncovered. That logo was also "owned" by Craig Braun's company merchandise wise for three years. He had an agreement with Rolling Stones Records (read: Musidor) for that.
Ernie had a mouth sample (from another record label) to show as reference when he joined Braun's company and it was Braun and Chess who gave him instructions to add (!) a sticking-out tongue to it, which resulted in that "in between" version. So even the term "his version" is out of place here.

My favorite tongue is the one from the original Sticky Fingers album, also my alltime favorite Stones' album. Redesigning it as years go by is cool; it keeps that red tongue alive!
Rockandroll,
