Best Version of Can't You Hear Me Knocking

I like the Keith intro to this song,as opposed to the intro on the studio version. It is more jazz like, and Ronnie's guitar work is excellent. Charlie really knows when to pick up the tempo when the song begins to lag a little. I consider it to be a jazz version of a song that was originally intended to be pure rock.

No live version I have seen yet beats the studio. But, some of the versions they did with Taylor and Ronnie were darn good. But man, that studio version is vicious and beautiful. some of Mick T's and Richards most nuanced and innovative guitar playing.

I would have to say the one I saw in Toronto on June 6, 2013 at the ACC. Both Bobby and Mick T's solos were great and went beyond the studio version. The one I saw in Buffalo last year was great too, but a bit more "paint by numbers," sticking close to the studio version.

It always bugs me how Keith doesn't play the full intro riff from the studio version--same with JJF.

I must admit I really like the Fonda version although neither Mick Taylor or Bobby Keys play on it. The guitar sound is outstanding and Ronnie's solo is on fire.

The studio version is the definitive best.
Live w/Mick Taylor versions are great.
Ronnie versions are always poor (when compared to the above).

Staples Center which I saw here. The whole Taylor tale led up to this moment. Jaws were on the floor, the great 2 Stones soloists giving us Sticky Fingers, stuff dreams are made of. Keys, takes the long way leading up to Taylor, no concessions, Bobby is rock and roll. Our Texas Coltrane gave us every drop of his earthly soul, He loved us all,. I can feel it right there.. Taylor quotes his classic lines, appears to faulter then steps into his "Soft Machine" best, squeezing every moment while The Glimmers check their watches and relent, they are powerless.Taylor still taking his time bends out an unpredictable set of flurries, the bravery and creativity shown the way it was done way back when people really listened. The music is in control, an avalanche caused by the power of great players playing a perfect jam, maybe the first time in 40 years in Stones land and certainly the last time. Taylor then steps back next to his guitar mates and begins the closing arpeggios, clear and concise, he directs and wills a lightning tight ending from the stunned billionaires. Best music moment of this young century, and yes it did indeed happen.

There is NO 'bad' version of CYHMK.

How about the 'Alternative' version released 2015 on 'Sticky Fingers Deluxe'
Usually, I can't abide when Jagger's vocals are that inferior/ he's too high,
but oh my the raw, fat guitars, the core here. I play that LOUD thru buds.

The original studio album version is the best in this case ..... followed by most of the 2013 live versions with Taylor.

Glastonbury 2013 "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is a great combination of sound quality and performance quality.

After that, there is the '80's live version with Taylor and Richards as well as Buffalo 2014 and the version from the Chicago United Center in September of 2002.

The one played sans Keef on Friday the 7th, February 2014 during the "Paris" rehearsals. Mick Taylor shone on this one and when the final note was played everyone standing on the sidewalk clapped and cheered!

I like all of them. Perhaps a bit more the version from MSG, 2003. I really liked Ronnie's solo, even it had not the "jazzy", " a la Santana" spirit of Mick Taylor (sorry Tayloristas...)

Wembley Arena same year ( 2003 ) was a great concert and a very fine version of CYHMK . & the same in Copenhagen 2007 .So also for me it works great live . Sounds great when they let it all hang out and turn it loose into some kind of a jam-session ...

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't I read somewhere on this very forum that the original studio version found on "Sticky Fingers" was, in fact, an editing together of two separate pieces?

MSG-Version on Four Flicks/Live Licks is outstanding. Best version I´ve ever heard in my life. The Stones do not need MT to nail this song.

*Holy Toledo I've never seen Glastonbury until now!
Mick Talor and Bobby Keys took it over and showed us where it came from/ it's in their blood/ DNA, CYHMK.
MT is one of those virtuoso gifted people that you never see it coming from-

P.S.
Re: Glastonbury CYHMK, the only one on stage who displayed no tension during the song was Keith! Keith looked genuine into it with MT, enjoying. The rest seemed tense.

I was at the September '02 United Center show, and it was an excellent version. I think it was the first, or one of the first, times they had played it. Ron was concentrating hard, and looked very pleased he could pull it off.

By January '03 at the United Center, it was old hat. Ron tossed it off, but it didn't have the same air of mystery (could he/they do it?) and concentration.

I saw Mick Taylor at the Philadelphia '13 show, and it was special. It was swinging, in a way that the Woody version wasn't. One of my Stones highlights.

Keith's playing on the youtube at the top of this thread was great. Ronnie's was good, but not at Mick T.'s level for this song.

I don't like the live versions.
The same can be said about "Sway".
No live version comes anywhere close.
It was a mistake to do Sway live.

While I'd agree that no live version of Sway comes close to the original studio, I'd say the that Sway at Staples Center, May 20, '13 was very special (warts and all) as was the entire show.
Yes the version was a bit clunky, but when MT let his guitar sing the lead solo it was masterful. Mick Taylor on four songs that night - very special indeed, and the best show of the tour imo!

I agree Rockman! I really am hoping for a DVD of this show. I think this is probably the best Can't You Hear Me Knockin with Ronnie. Listening to this, and comparing to the Licks version, you can really see how he was watching Mick Taylor closely. He adds his own Ronnie space dust on this and it sounds mighty fine. I hope this show comes out on vinyl!

Four Flicks is M.S.G. 2003 second night.

Live Licks "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is from the Wiltern Theatre in 2002.

2 different performances.

This is true.
BUT there is a good version with Mick Taylor from 2012-2013 tour.
The problem is that Mick J stopped him during the outro.
Anyway, Sway in studio has got a different spirit. Love the sound, love Charlie's work, love the two solos of Mick and love the way Jagger played the second guitar.

This is, in my opinion, the best live version of Sway with MT
