Had tickets for Merle and Willie Saturday. sad smiley

Starting to think Willie's a curse for me, last time I went to see him Johnny Cash died that morning, and the time before that my brothers dog died that day and mine the day before!

So do you live close to Springfield, Mo?

St. Louis. Springfield was supposed to be tonight or tomorrow night I think.

Him & Johnny Cash were my favorite country guys. Merle had it all: a great player, singer & songwriter. He was about the same age as my dad & was 1 (with Johnny) of the few musicians we could agree about. He will be missed. I was lucky to see 2 really great shows with him. 1 opening for Dylan where he was relishing being able to step out of his normal set because of the Dylan crowd. The other 1 was at a Native American casino in Fife, WA (just outside of Seattle). Early in the show, Merle stopped the band to tell a story. Turns out on 1 of his jailbreaks, he was busted in Fife. Very entertaining & funny. Merle then played a much longer show than the contractually obligated one & was clearly having a great time. I remember seeing Eddie Spaghetti of the Supersuckers rocking out down the row from me at that show. Merle was truly an icon. RIP.

My Merle Haggard story.
Had a photo and backstage pass for Haggard, Conway Twitty, and George Jones in 1990. Twitty was not friendly, I just wanted an autograph. Said "I don't have time son". Asked him again, as we walked 40 ft to a bus. It was only me, no one else was there. He had two state officers escorting him, gave me the same answer.
I met Merle later, told him and he said basically that was an @#$%& and didn't like his fans. Merle actually apologized for him to me, as it was my first country show.
Then he said signed things for me.

Nice guy

My dad is a huge Merle Haggard fan and has played country music since he was 15. I grew up with that stuff bus as I hit my teen years I discovered rock and roll and left that behind as I made my own way in life. Funny thing is that as I got older I started listening to the guys he loved, people like Merle, George Jones and Waylon Jennings and enjoyed connecting to it again. Just over a year ago my dad asked me to play drums with a pickup country band he plays with once a month. Playing those classic country songs was a revelation to me. Loved every minute of it and I have finally understood what my dad saw in guys like Merle Haggard. A classic country musician who deserves every accolade he gets. A sad day.

Sing me back home

didn't hear much about this but as I recall the story is the Merle was supposed to break out of jail with two others. They built a large desk in the woodwork shop for a judge & the two others would not let Merle go with them as he we too young. The two escaped by hiding inside the desk and one ended up killing a police officer and was then captured and sentenced to death. The song was about that experience.

Anybody else hear this version?

In the issue below one writer interviewed all the Stones and referred to Mick's FARAWAY EYES accent as a "country accent." He mentioned to Keith that Mick's accent sounded more like a Bakersfield accent than a Southern accent. And Keith said,"You're right. I know Mick listened to a lot of Merle Haggard."

Saw Willie in Springfield MO Friday night. Man what a great emotional night it was.

Jamie Johnson was one of the warm up acts. He played all Merle until the last song.

Also Luke Nelson was there and played with all three acts.

Willie was great . I think he played at least 20 songs.

He did not say anything about Merle. Played "Its all going to Pot" great song and even better video. Everyone should watch it.

Just a couple of old guys enjoying life.

In that song Willie mentions Merle's name twice and got a rise from the crowd.

Willie also played "Okie From Muskogie"

Jumpontopofmebaby, that sounds like a great show.

Saw Jamie in a small theater last year, just him and his band playing.no frills, just a group of guys making music.it was fantastic.

Luke Nelson[willies son] is an unbelievable guitar player.he does country.rock and blues stuff.i was shocked the first time i saw him, that kid is really good.

i think i linked the youtube video of them gettin high and making "it's all going to pot" a few posts back.a really funny look at two masters at work that everyone should see.

Yes great video.

Luke played Texas Flood - Tribute to Stevie Ray. He is very good. Wanting to catch him with Neil Young.

And Jamie Johnson to me is the real deal. Will go see him again

Similar show in St. Louis, opening act Ryan Bingham did a great version of "Whipping Post" and ended his show with "Mama Tried".

Jamie Johnson started with "Think I'll Just Stay Here And Drink" and "Fighting Side Of Me".

Then he brought out unannounced special guest Lee Ann Womack and they did "Yesterday's Wine", "Working Man Blues", and "Silver Wings", and ended his show with his own song "In Color" which he said he's only playing because Merle said he liked it.

Everyone came back on stage for "Okie from Muskogie" and stuck around the rest of the show for "The Whole World's Going To Pot", "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die", "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" and "I'll Fly Away". Willie introduced them as the Merle Tabernacle Choir. smoking smiley

Surprisingly no Mendocino County Line even though Lee Ann Womack was there.

This is off topic. But if you live near St Louis you should do Sammy Hagar and the Circle. He loves St Louis and it is a fun show. Plays several Zeppelin songs with Jason Bonhom playing drums.
