Interesting, while googling it I bumped into this page with an early version of the cover that I hadn't seen before : [garyrocks.wordpress.com]

Oh and they also have the elusive promo "3D" (minus the scratch) that's been framed in my home since 2009 ;-)

I'll admit that when I bought that album, I didn't even know it was Jagger on the front. Keith, sure. But Mick?! I friend told me and I still couldn't believe it!

Cool photo. Thanks for posting it!

It always amazes me that people didn't immediately recognize Mick on the front. I remember some trying to convince me it wasn't him, but it seems so obvious.

What about the picture isn't "Mick-like?" beside the swept back hair?

With Beatles vs. Stones talk I sometimes think how no Beatles album would ever just have had John on the front and Paul on the back with no George or Ringo.

Was there a reason given as to why the other band members weren't mentioned, even Sonny Rollins, on the sleeve and inner sleeve? Not one word. It's been a while since I've looked at it, but I think Bob Clearmountain and Chris Kimsey are mentioned but not the rest of the band. Makes me think that the cover was put together hastily, but...

That's awesome...thanks.

I too always found the cover to not look like Jagger...but the back was
definitely Keith so by default you knew the front was Jagger.

That little piece of hair hanging on his forehead on the right side matches
and confirms the picture is the one they used for the cover.

Mick was asked this in his CREEM interview in 1981. He said, he couldn't remember everyone that was on the tracks and couldn't be bothered and just decided it didn't matter since everyone was paid at the time.

I read that the reason the album contains no liner notes is Jagger didn't want
the fans to know how old these tracks were and he didn't want to give an
invitation and confirmation for these musicians to come chasing him down for $.

Yeah, I've heard that, too, but when you read or listen to interviews from 1981 or 1982, they're pretty up front about it - both Mick and Keith.

My original post meant why no other members of the Stones weren't mentioned or pictured. No Bill, no Charlie, no Ron. I think it's their only major release where there's no mention or picture of the other members besides Mick and Keith.

Front, back cover of GOATS HEAD SOUP was Mick, Keith only... without the LP title or songs listed either!

Mick Jagger & Keith Richards: Making Tattoo You

Mick: Tattoo You is actually an old record. It's all a lot of old tracks that I dug out. And it was very strange circumstances. Chris Kimsey and I went though all the tracks from those two previous records. It wasn't all outtakes; some of it was old songs. And then I went back and found previous ones like Waiting on a Friend, from Goats Head Soup. They're all from different periods.

Then I had to write lyrics and melodies. A lot of them didn't have anything, which is why they weren't used at the time - because they weren't complete. They were just bits, or they were from early takes. And then I put them all together in an incredibly cheap fashion. I recorded in this place in Paris in the middle of winter. And then I recorded some of it in a broom cupboard, literally, where we did the vocals. The rest of the band were hardly involved. And then I took it to Bob Clearmountain, who did this great job of mixing so that it doesn't sound like it's from different periods.

Keith: I thought Mick did a great job with Tattoo You. There were only one or two things I went back on with Bob Clearmountain. My main complaint in the beginning with the recording of this record was that they were hopping around using different studios and it started to seem a bit chaotic. In actual fact, Mick pulled it all together. He did a great job in organizing it. It was up to Mick because it was Mick's contributions that weren't recorded. What was missing ws Mick's normal contribution to a Rolling Stones track - the vocals.

HILARIOUS!

May 24, 1981: Keith Richards sends a telegram to Ron Wood and Bill Wyman to show up in New York
City for a band meeting - Be here tomorrow or you're not on the album cover - , then flies off for a
holiday with Patti Hansen in Florida.

Late May 1981: Ron Wood records with Bob Dylan for the album Shot of Love in Los Angeles.

May 26, 1981: Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman meet in New York City to discuss the next
tour and album. Keith Richards fails to show up as promised.

May 29, 1981: Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman listen to the nearly-finished Tattoo You
album at Mick Jagger's apartment in New York City. Ron Wood shows up very late.

June 1, 1981: Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts meet with Bill Wyman at his hotel room in New York City.
Keith Richards is still in Florida. They discuss the Stones' near future.

June 5, 1981: With Keith Richards still not having shown up, Bill Wyman returns to England.

June 7, 1981: Bill Wyman gets a drunken phone call from Charlie Watts in New York saying the Rolling
Stones are finished and he will not tour with them.

Something about the lighting makes his features look sharper than they usually look in photos.

Has the original "Tattoo You" photo of Keith (without the tattoo) ever surfaced?

The inner gatefold of the lp cover had Charlie, Mick T and Bill's photos.

That must have hurt like hell getting those tattoos put on and then taken off.

No wonder the other band members didn't want their pictures on the covers.

On the internet nobody knows
you're Mick Jagger
