When The Whip Comes Down

Yeah, mama and papa told me I was crazy to stay
I was gay in New York, which is a fag in L.A.
So I saved my money and I took the plane
Wherever I go, they just treat me the same

When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down

Yeah

Yeah I go to 53rd Street and they spit in my face
But I'm learning the ropes, yeah, I'm learning a trade
The East River truckers are churning with trash
I've got so much money but I spend it so fast

When the whip comes down - yeah
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down

When the shit hits the fan, I'll be sitting on the can
When the whip comes down

Yeah, some call me garbage when I'm sweeping up the street
But I never roll and I never cheat
And I'm filling a need, yeah, I'm plugging a hole
My mama's so glad I ain't on the dole

When the whip comes down - yes
When the whip comes down

Yeah, when the shit hits the fan, I'll be sitting on the can
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down

When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down

Yeah, go ahead, sugar

Yes...

When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
Yeah I'll be running this town

I'll tell you
When the shit hits the fan, baby, I'll be sitting on the can
When the whip comes down

Yeah
Oooh!

Why baby, why, why baby
I'll tell you
I'll be running this town
Check it out, check it out, check it out, check it out, check it out, check it out, check it out, check it out

Yeah, when the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
Yeah, when the whip comes down
When the whip comes down
When the whip comes down

After their detours and disappointments in the mid-70s, here we have our favorite band returning to full-throttle, stripped down, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll. And lo and behold, everything works beautifully, from Charlie’s opening salvo and glorious sonic propulsion, to the fiery synergy of Keith and Ronnie’s snarling and weaving guitars, to Mick’s brilliantly evocative lyrics that take the listener on an exhilarating ride through the gritty streets of New York in the 1970s … funny and sad and furious all at the same time. An essential part of the triumphant return to glory that was Some Girls.

Perfection! Simple, swaggering, groovy and dangerous. And with Mick Jagger on absolute top form.

The live version from Detroit even takes it a notch further. The original 9 minute version is also a joy to listen to.

An untamed beast, a wild rocker – love it! thumbs up

I like it as a Live-song but not the studio-recording...

Hampton 81 is my favorite version. More than any other song from Some Girls this makes
undoubtedly clear that "one of the most notoriously inept bands in music" (as Jonny Rotten
called them) were still The Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band In The World.

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

Ah - When The Riff Comes Down - what a nifty little rocker and the Stones' response to punk.

Here's a possible scenario about the song's conception.

Mick: "'Ere Keef - bleedin' punk rock's all over the place. We're going to sound like miserable old farts unless we do something about it. Oh God, what we goin' to do?"

Keef: In growling, coughy voice..."Ahuh huh huh. Hey relax man. Got this Chuck Berry riff that goes something like this."

Ronnie: "Hey guys, now if you just speed the whole thing up a bit and Mick, throw in a few lines of sleaze and I think we got something."

So yeah - good observation on Mick's part (or whoever wrote the lyrics). The Ramones were already singing about New York's 53rd and 3rd streets and trying to turn a trick so the Stones had done their homework well to forge a new sound.

Throughout their career the Stones have been popular music's great chameleons - more than any other artist I can think of apart from David Bowie.

And here they were at it again. Slick move, catchy song, bad boy image - a winner all the way.

The guitars in all the harder songs are just fantastic on this album ... Whip, Lies, Respectable ... it was my first Stones album and these songs, along with Beast, Before They Make Me Run, Some Girls and Shattered, were a guarantee to make me a Stones fan for life!

That's rich coming from the SEX PISTOLS, a band nearly devoid of any musical talent whatsoever.

Wow - only 12 posts for a song off an album generally acknowledged to be in the Stones' top 5. eye popping smiley

Utterly brilliant track; the studio version - especially the 10 minute version - is one of the bands' best ever. That swagger and attitude, the lyrics and gritty New York realism.

Live it was fabulous of course, my own favourite is either Detroit or 'Live in Texas' 1978 - listen to Ronnie weave some magic.

Sometimes when I listen to 'Some Girls' I think how amazing it is for a band to be over-the-hill at that time to create something timeless - Miss You, Beast, Whip, Shattered, Lies, Some Girls...etc; incredible.

Hmm. I do have a Mexico City OLE hangover even tho I stayed home and don't drink,
but,
never once did I compare it to punk (confess ignorance in that genre)
and it just hit me reading thru here perhaps this song isn't about being a garbage man driving a garbage truck in NYC for a living like I thought
when I heard it first time in my teens. Sometimes it's okay to grow up sheltered and not in metropolis, I guess.
I had the vinyl LP 'Sucking in the Seventies'
I wore all the grooves down to dust, so whatever live versions on there, thumbs up
ETA: Live in Detroit '78 would be that version.

Isn't it «I never rob, and I never cheat»?

Too bad they didn't include the extra live verse («Mister Rockefeller won't give me no loan»). I liked that verse.

When The Whip Comes down is a good example for the rediscovered simple, raw and guitar-driven sound and rocking approach but it is just average, nothing to get excited about.

All right, I went overboard, but still...I know it was Rotten's M.O. to slam the decadent rock bands of the '60s and early '70s, but that statement just rubbed me the wrong way coming from him.

I'd somewhat agree, but it's an essential part of the overall vibe of Some Girls and is indeed something to get excited about.

Even though it has a somewhat chaotic and ramshackle think going on, I never considered it punk in any way. Perhaps influenced by, but not punk.

A great Stones rocker from the album with every genre on it. It was years before I even understood the words or even what they were talking about, I just always liked the hard charging kicking ass vibe sound feel. It seems built to be played live with its snarling lyrics, great chorus, screaming guitars, grooovy bass line and Charlie doing his thing... it is how I like my Stones served, red hot cherry red hot
