I agree that Lies is the only weak track. Punk by numbers. Everything else on the album is pretty great.

I love the guitars and Mick's singing on Lies. Come to think of it, I love the bass and drums, too smiling smiley

You’d love a loud smelly horse fart if the Stones released it as a song but ‘Lies’ is definitely a keeper. ‘When The Whip Comes Down’ and ‘Just My Imagination’, on the other hand, are incredibly weak. Replace them with ‘Claudine’ and ‘Do You Think..’ and you’d have an album that almost lives up to its reputation – as it is Some Girls barely cracks the top 10 IMHO.

Btw, do you care to tell us why Imagination and When The Whip Comes Down are «incredibly weak»? That's certainly an interesting view.

I'm pretty certain that if Lies did not make the album, and instead were a b-side, that this thread would be flooded with comments to replace another track w/ Lies. It's such a powerful tune, it is a must on SG.

Misty Roads, Yellow Cab/Do You Think I Really Care, I Can't Help It/Love You Too Much, So Young, No Spare Parts, We Had It All and Claudine are all good tunes, like many have mentioned here. However, only We Had It All is strong enough to earn a spot on SG, imo (It was a ER outtake, though). If so, that would have been to replace Far Away Eyes. That would never have happened. Far Away Eyes is awesome, and it was one of the songs they made a promo video for.

To conclude: SG is perfect as it is, imho.

I totally agree.
The album isnt nearly half as good as its reputation promises. - Yes they sound re-freshed and re-born and re-energized but the songwriting is average at best. Even boring GHS has a couple of tracks that are better than most on SG.

And SG offers one of the Stones´ greatest clunkers of all time - Faraway Eyes.

SG offers only two outstanding songs imo: Some Girls and Beast Of Burden, Black And Blue in comparison offers only outstanding tracks (except Fool To Cry which is simply awful).

I wonder about SG´s reputation if it wouldnt contain the massive hit Miss You.

Replace Lies with Tallahassee Lassie.

Re: SOME GIRLS - IF YOU COULD REPLACE ONE TRACK

Miss You
Before They Make Me Run
Beast Of Burden
Shattered
Far Away Eyes

are NOT «average» song-writing.

Some people may not like the songs, but those songs are not average in any way. On the contrary, they are all different than the songs they had written at that point.

DandelionPowderman,

Totally agree...Miss You and Far Away Eyes are awesome....the stark difference
in the two tracks is mind blowing...they really stretched it here...as they went three albums without a country song...and blew away the current market in the height of disco with Miss You.

Could you ever imagine The Beatles, The Who or Led Zeppilin recording a disco song and a country song of that magnitude on the same album....Never! They couldn't pull it off...I know The Who and Led Zeppelin can record some country...but not like The Stones...and neither of them could record a disco track if they tried...but on the flip side of the coin...they probably would never want to...so I have to give them a pass on that.

My perfect SOME GIRLS would be...

1.) The 12" single of MISS YOU with the saxophone overdub - sort of like the 8 track version of MISS YOU, but full length
2.) The live version of WHIP COMES DOWN from SUCKING IN THE 70s
3.) The live version of IMAGINATION from STILL LIFE, unedited
4.) replace title track with EVERYTHING IS TURNING TO GOLD
5 - 10.) are left intact

An already amazing album is now staggering to behold

Just my Imagination is a decent cover but that’s all it is. Play it live occasionally by all means and it makes a very welcome addition to one of those live albums I never listen to but compared to say, Harlem Shuffle or Ain’t To Proud To Beg, it’s pretty bland – for my money I’d prefer an original tune (I’m talking to you, Claudine) .

When The Whip Comes Down is bland too. Songs like Whip, Respectable, and the title track aren’t catchy at all. What they have is that edginess, the Stones swagger that had been pretty much absent in the previous three albums and that’s why I think they appeal to a lot of people but again, as songs, they’re average at best.

Some Girls really is overrated. Miss You, Beast and Before They Make Me Run are monster tracks of course and anyone could be forgiven for loving this album just based on those three songs alone. Still, it makes for a very uneven record. Shattered and Faraway Eyes are good but they fall under the category of novelty/gimmicky songs – they shouldn’t be rated any higher than, say, Fingerprint File or Heaven. And the rest of the record, half of the record, is average at best. (I actually like Lies but it’s just high-energy fun - it’s hardly a classic.)

I don't think that Some Girls is overrated or uneven. I think that it sounds very cohesive in fact. The whole album, no matter what songs and genres these individual songs can be placed, has a very unique sound, attitude and atmosphere which is reflected on the Some Girls summer 1978 tour, where the band's sound is totally different compared to 1975/1976.

Come to think of it, theoretically the concept to come up with an album that mixes as diverse genres as Disco, Punk, Country, Rock'n'Roll, Soul and Blues and I dare to say even New Wave before the term was even invented ("Shattered") sounds like a recipe for desaster. I could name countless examples of bands trying to adjust to the times by adding a little Disco or Punk to their sound back then, ending up sounding not only forced and unconvincing, but in some cases even ridiculous.

But not the Stones! They did not just make this concept work (which is a miracle in itself), they came up with an album and subsequent tour that once again put them at top of all their contemporaries. They, as a "dinosaur" band even back then, came out of the musicial climate at the time as relivened and refreshed, with major artistic and commercial success.

Nearly 40 years later, it is easy to say "oh, I don't like this or that, replace it with Claudine, No Spare Parts, Turning To Gold, Tallahassee Lassie" or whatever but whatever one may think of individual tracks, Some Girls the album is a perfect mixture. Each and every track adds to a perfect picture, carefully planned and executed by the band's artistic vision at the time. In case one starts tampering with the SG tracklist, one could as easily ask the band to replace "Moonlight Mile" with a "more stonesy-sounding rocker" because Mile sounds "too progressive", to replace "Prodigal Son" or "Love In Vain" because they're "just blues covers" and so on. One could always argue against individual tracks on any given album. But why should anyone want to do that?

Marvellous post.

An album, that can have that farreaching effect!

But that could be said about tracks like Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Rocks Off, Happy and All Down The Line as well.

Sometimes two chords are enough to make a great song. It doesn't have to be «accomplished» or complicated, especially not with the Stones.

I’m surprised you have to ask that. We are happy to dissect, debate, subvert and reinterpret every known gesture Charlie Watts has ever made ad nauseam – that’s what we DO here. And the songs and albums receive the same treatment - that's how threads like this get started.

Btw, I hardly think the Stones had any ‘concept’ in mind when they recorded Some Girls. Mick was influenced by the club scene and Keith was still perfecting his open G riffs, same as same as. But as you say the various musical genres sit together well on Some Girls (but B&B features a fairly eclectic selection of songs too). I still feel Just My Imagination should'Ve been axed - it's no Prodigal Son IMHO.

Actually, he wasn't. He only plays open G on BTMMR, and the setlists (1976-1982) had fewer and fewer open G-songs. The same goes for the albums in that era.

In this period Keith developed as a lead guitar player with the weaving style he and Ronnie developed, hence he played less open G.

With the weaving style more prominent by SG, Mick Jagger started to play more rhythm guitar to fill in, as weaving is more focused towards lead playing.

I'd leave both albums as the are.

I love SG.... and the out takes are themselves one of my favourite albums.
they sound like the band having a "fun day"

I just wish they were available on vinyl !sad smiley

...What a great idea for a thread this was though.

With the Stones' prediliction for recycling old "proto" material for later albums, it would interesting to speculate on the results had many of the songs conceived between 69 & 71 turned up on the album the sessions were nominally aimed at.

Despite the backing tracks WHEN YOU'RE GONE and KEEP UP BLUES are 2011 Stones to me. That's when most or all of the lyrics were written and when the vocals were cut and even some bits of music.
