The Exile on Main Street Game (You're the Hero)

Hi all,

Exile on Main Street has been discussed a billion times : some love it, some don't get it and the rest don't get why they keep talking about it.
I definitely belong to the second group : so many great songs, so many styles, but I just can't listen to it from Rocks Off to Soul Survivor without skipping a couple of songs... Why ? Is it a problem with the songs ? Is it a problem with the mix ?
No.
It's a problem with the track listing : selection AND order. The official release's order blunts the strength of the set.

Now, let's revamp it and find the best selection and order possible following these simple principles :
- As many songs as possible to save the magic of this rock 'n roll overdose
- As few songs as possible to make the journey as sharp and powerful as it ought to be

Here is the list that I enjoy the most :
- Rocks Off
- Torn and Frayed
- Ventilator Blues
- Tumbling Dice
- Sweet Virginia
- Casino Boogie
- Happy
- Rip This Joint
- Soul Survivor
- Shine a Light
- I Just Want to See His Face
- All Down the Line (a.k.a. Rock 'n Roll is here to stay!)

Taken out :
- Shake Your Hips
- Sweet Black Angel
- Loving Cup
- Turd on the Run
- Let It Loose
- Stop Breaking Down
For me, all of these lack the focus required to support the full energy of the set. They are good on their own, but don't fit.

What do you think ?
What would be your selection and order ?

Songs taken out?
I would suggest to add a few...

Let it rock!

My personal opinion is I could not imagine the album not having those tunes.

I don't understand what the game is and how one can be the hero.

For me, that "lack of focus" is exactly what makes this album so @#$%& great! smoking smiley

All right guys! It seems like we have bunch of 1st category player :-)

Really, no bad transition on the album ? ... like Rip This Joint after Rocks Off ? Rip This Joint is the absolute weapon to shake the house but Rocks Off has already put it upside down, so why throw Rip This Joint at that moment ? Seems like a missed opportunity for me... On the other hand, Happy leaves you stoned after Keith's final brutal riffs, Rip This Joint right after it is perfect to wake you up...

I just don't get your point. The four sides are brilliant the way they are. And Soul Survivor is perfect where it is. But each to his own of course.

I slightly disagree : for me Soul Survivor is weaker after Shine a Light...

No, no, NO..lyrically, SS is the yang to SAL's ying. First, is the lament about a lost soul and then there is the soul survivor. BAM!

Exile On Main Street is a journey album.

It takes you on a fantastic rolling journey deep into the heart of Americana with highs and lows and a gathering and slowing down of pace every now and then to stop and smell the roses, as it were.

Without those tracks mentioned above that beautiful sense of dynamics would be lost as well as a major geographical part of our roadtrip, namely the southern states.

Shake Your Hips - southern country blues
Sweet Black Angel - Caribbean country blues
Loving Cup - Appalachian mountain country folk
Turd On The Run - southern r'n'b
Let It Loose - Memphis soul
Stop Breaking Down - Louisiana blues

Took me many years to appreciate what the deal was with Exile.
After I found out, I wouldn't change a single note.

The only song I would even consider taking out & maybe replacing with one of the songs that came out with the deluxe version is "Turd On the Run". I don't think I'd even take that one out. Messing with the masterpiece at the top of Mount Rock...

Yes.
The power of the album are also those tunes. I'm talking about the atmosphere.
In an album are important good tracks (and in Exile there are a lot of great tracks) but as in LIB are other tuner that give to the album its atmosphere.
So yes to - Casino Boogie, Stop breaking and Let it loose.

From this point of view Exile is the best double studio album ever.
And Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 of GN'R are similiar to Exile in term of structure of the albums. Side1 of Exile is good as Side2.

Have a nice day.

AAaaaarggghhhh! One of the (many) beauties of this album is the way each of the four sides seems to have its own character, almost like a mini-album within an album (if that makes sense).

I agree with you, atmosphere is the key. But for me, the flow does not work on the album. I'm not looking for a "great tunes only" album, I'm looking for erasing the hiccups in the journey. I think that some transitions are not good.

GHS for instance is a weaker album but flows much better.
