In 1982 West Nally ‘cut its teeth’ in music sponsorship. Never mind practicing
on something small – this was straight into the deep end with one of the biggest
rock bands of all time – The Rolling Stones.

At that time, West Nally was already working on some music related sponsorships for client Levi Jeans and was planning major concerts linked to the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. The Rolling Stones management needed funding for the tour and West Nally were able to produce the goods.

TDK blank tape sponsored most of Europe with Lee Cooper jeans in the UK. Italian motor-cycle company Piaggio sponsored the Italian ‘leg’ and their sister company Gilera took France.

By 1983, West Nally were putting David Bowie into Levi jeans for his Serious Moonlight Tour – and also handled the merchandise sales worldwide. This was soon to be followed by Sony sponsorship of Duran Duran. The message was that “Music” is the obvious vehicle through which you can reach young people. It was seen to be a vastly superior medium to television advertising where the kids have the remote control button and are ready to switch off. Concerts were promoted as a medium for entertaining thousands of teenagers for several hours in an environment where product messages could be well presented.

The rest is history.

Photographer Arthur Elgort was known for working with models, but he also photographed The Rolling Stones at
Long View Farm in North Brookfield, Massachusetts, in 1981. The band spent six weeks living and rehearsing on
the property before going on tour that year.

Thanks for the picture. Haven't seen that one before. I noticed Jagger wearing shoes tied with Velcro tape. I didn't think they were around in 1981 already...

In the last year, there were additional photos of the Rolling Stones at Long View Farm by Arthur Elgort posted online for the first time.

There's something really funny and charming about the roof photos

Yep
Has a 1966-1968 group photo feel.
Not too many like that after 1970.
That's why this one really is so charming.

That's probably correct. Wish there were more of them later on, but I guess as the band gets smaller it becomes less likely anyway

Yeah, I'm sure Keith Moon climbed outside the building to the 16th floor. More complete bullshit. And landed safely in a pile after falling out the window. More complete and utter bullshit. Remember when he was drunk and broke into a hospital and performed brain surgery on an unsuspecting Chuck Berry? Yeah, me neither.

Köln

In July 1982, two legendary concerts took place in Cologne: The Rolling Stones played in front of a total of 80,000
fans over two days in the Müngersdorf Stadium, with Wolfgang Niedecken and BAP as an opening act.

BAP , Peter Maffay and the J. Geils Band also performed in Cologne . Peter Maffay was booed mercilessly: BAP was celebrated! Although I was never a Maffay fan and certainly never will be, you could still feel a bit sorry for the band. Peter Maffay simply didn't fit into the supporting program of the 1982 Rolling Stones tour . However, as he was becoming increasingly popular in Germany at the time, the concert organizers probably saw him as an additional drawcard for the Stones and booked him for the opening act.

Artist Kazuhide Yamazaki

The Rolling Stones asked Kazu to design what Rolling Stone magazine described as, “the largest mobile concert set ever built: sixty-four feet wide, with eighty-foot ramps stretching out from the right and left sides, and another 150 feet of fluttering silk strips streaming into the bleachers. The massive scrims surrounding the stage — painted with post-modernist pastel renderings of cars, guitars and long-playing records — were constructed with 10,000 square feet of cloth (enough, according to one source, to outfit three clipper ships with complete sets of sails).”

Kazu’s designs for the ‘81 tour were also featured in The Stones’ music video for “Angry” from their 2023 album ‘Hackney Diamonds.’
