yeah, that Boulder show looked a bit different than the other shows.
Also the stage didn't have the car and the flag, etc... There must have been high winds or a storm.

I believe the different quoting of the date of the famous surprise gig at Sit Morgan's Cove is because (according to news articles) the Stones didn't roll in to the club until just around midnight.

Amazing photos! When I was a kid living in Toronto, I saved up every cent from working in a record shop to go to NYC to see a Stones show on the 81 tour. Was gonna buy a scalped ticket as these shows were sold out in seconds. When I got there, tickets were going for 1000 bucks U.S! This was an insane amount of money in 1981 to see a concert. Needless to say I didn't get to go, but was still thrilled to be in the same city as my heroes. I still wonder why the Boys skipped Canada on this tour. Saw them in Buffalo, Syracuse and Detroit on the tour tho. Still some of my best r'n'r memories...Quote

Candlestick Park, Oct. 18 '81. Most likely taken with my instamatic. It was me and my Mom cuz I didn't have my driver's license yet so she took me.. If any of you were at this show and on the field maybe you'll recognize yourself (apologize for size of pics, can't figure out how to make em smaller)

(UPI) Police held two 16-year-old suspects Thursday in two separate stabbings — one fatal —
at a Rolling Stones concert criticized for its lack of security by an off- duty police officer hired to keep order.
Police Lt. Bill Sanders, in charge of a 34-man security patrol at the Astrodome Wednesday
night, said at one point he ordered his men off a floor because of assaults ow ilie uniformed officers.
"You can say this: We lost a life because there were not enough officers," Sanders said.
He said several officers told him they would not return to duty Thursday night for the
second of two concerts.
Police said Wesley Shelton, 22, of Houston was stabbed twice in the chest during a fight
with a 16-year-old who said he was a vendor from whom the victim stole nachos. Shelton
died 30 minutes later, the second death on the band's current 32-city U.S. tour.
Officers recovered a pocket knife with a 4-inch blade from the suspect when he was apprehanded
at a motel across the street from the Astrodome on suspicion of stealing a watch.
Meanwhile, a T-shirt seller identified as John Hall, 18, of Clear Lake, Texas, was stabbed
in the lower back after pursuing a teenager for stealing a T- shirt, Juvenile Detective
F.B. Stachmus said. A 16- year-oid suspect was in custody.
Concert promoters had 400 security personnel in identifying T-shirts providing the main
security, and Pace Management official Allen J. Becker said the concert was overstaffed
with security people.
Sanders, however, said 34 police officers were not enough. "What are you going to do —
34 officers and 65,000 people?" he said. "We have 100-120 officers during Oilers football
games. For this, we should have had 150-200 out there."
The names of the suspects were withheld by police because they were juveniles.
There also were reports of two rapes related to the concert, but police said they were
unable to confirm them. They said records were incomplete but they had nine dispatcher
calls at the concert, most of them drugs, drunks or disturbances.
The killing was the second death on this U.S. tour by the Stones. Two hours before the
band's Oct. 15 concert in Seattle's Kingdome, a 16-year-old girl died of injuries in a
fall from a stadium ramp while waiting see the band.
Rolling Stones spokesman Paul Wasserman in Los Angeles expressed regret about the
Houston death but said would not affect the band's schedule. The Stones went ahead
with their second concert in Houston Thursday night. "I don't know what comment I
can make. It's unfortunate. Anything like that always is. Let's face it. There's 65,000
people there and luckily things like this haven't happened (more often)," Wasserman said.

HOUSTON (AP) _ The family of a man killed at a 1981 Rolling Stones concert in Houston will receive a $4.7
million settlement, attorneys said.
The wife, son and mother of Wesley Allen Shelton sued after the 22-year-old machinist was stabbed to death near a
concession stand at the Astrodome as the British rock group played on stage.
Probate Judge Jim Scanlan Friday approved a $1.1 million portion of the settlement, designated for the son,
6-year-old Ernest Scott Shelton. The money will be paid in several installments over 24 years and will not be subject
to taxes or attorney fees.
The remainder of the settlement, which does not require a judge’s approval, will go to Shelton’s widow,
Jennie Shelton, and his mother, Barbara Shelton, said John O’Quinn, one of the family’s attorneys. The widow
will receive $3.1 million and the mother will get $500,000, he said.
Most of the settlement will be paid by Pace Concerts which promoted the show, said Ed McAninch, another
attorney representing the Sheltons.
But the Rolling Stones, the Houston Sports Association, which runs the Astrodome, and Harry M. Stevens,
the Astrodome concessions contractor, also will contribute, the lawyer said.
Wesley Shelton was stabbed twice after he bumped into a 16-year-old and the two began arguing. Daniel Cerda, who
was an off-duty concessions worker, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He now is
out on parole, McAninch said.
"The family claimed in their suit that security at the concert was inadequate", O’Quinn said.
"Thirty security officers were on duty to control the 60,000 fans at the show, he said. An additional 400 T-shirt
security personnel were hired", he said.
"The facts show the security they had out there was not even as much as they have for an Oilers (football) game", said O’Quinn.
The Sheltons refused comment as they hurried from the courtroom Friday. O’Quinn said the family was concerned that
publicity could endanger the 6- year-old boy.

The Rolling Stones, whose 1978 American tour was rumored to be their last
anywhere, yesterday put an end to those rumors. They announced dates for a 12-
week American tour that will begin with a show at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium on
Sept. 25. The tour will include performances in some of the nation's largest
stadiums and in indoor sports arenas, but there will also be surprise
appearances in smaller concert halls and even in night clubs. Dates and sites
for the engagements in small halls and clubs have not been divulged, but
approximately three-fourths of the group's concerts in large facilities have
been set.
The Rolling Stones have reserved the week of Oct. 9-13 for performances in the
Los Angeles area and the week of Nov. 9-13 for shows in and around New York.
No locations have been announced for either city, but sources close to the
band have mentioned Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom and both Giants Stadium and
Byrne Arena in New Jersey's Meadowlands as possible sites.
The group and their tour manager, Bill Graham, plan to keep the dates and
locations of their small concert hall and night club appearances a secret
until the last minute. ''The smaller shows will be surprises,'' a spokesman
for the group said. Confirmed Dates Listed
The five-man British group is rehearsing for the tour in rural Massachusetts.

11 ARRESTED AT STONES CONCERT

Bottles sailed through the air and 11 persons were arrested as hundreds of
screaming, rain-soaked rock fans gathered at a small nightclub where the
Rolling Stones were giving a ''secret'' concert for the holders of 300 free
tickets.
''Boy - some secret,'' Capt. John Walsh said last night as he and about 70
other policemen, some wearing helmets and carrying batons, tried to maintain
order in the marijuana-smoking, beer-drinking crowd outside Sir Morgan's Cove.

Bottles sailed through the air and 11 persons were arrested as hundreds of
screaming, rain-soaked rock fans gathered at a small nightclub where the
Rolling Stones were giving a ''secret'' concert for the holders of 300 free
tickets.
''Boy - some secret,'' Capt. John Walsh said last night as he and about 70
other policemen, some wearing helmets and carrying batons, tried to maintain
order in the marijuana-smoking, beer-drinking crowd outside Sir Morgan's Cove.

Finally, at midnight, Blue Monday had begun. The Cockroaches had finally arrived. But the
drenched and drunken throng of more than 4,000 filling the sidewalks and street knew
better.
"Stones! Stones! Stones!" they chanted in deafening unison. From the rooftops and car tops
and even the tops of the streetlights, they whistled. They whooped. They screamed. They
even launched flares. And, as 75 Worcester policemen held their yard-long riot batons
ready and snapped down the shields on their riot helmets, the crowd craned for a glimpse
of a legend.
The curtains were drawn on the motor home's windows, but somehow even that didn't matter.
Somehow, the crowd that had spent half a night out in the rain was too wet and too loose
and having too much of its own party to care. Somehow it was enough that they were only a
few feet from what may be the most famous rock band in the world.
They said the Rolling Stones' first public tour in three years was going to begin Sept. 25
in Philadelphia.
The concert in JFK Stadium is still on, but the tour started here Monday, shortly
before midnight, in a small tavern in the heart of this blue-collar city of 170,000 about
an hour west of Boston.
The Rolling Stones' "private" jam session at Sir Morgan's Cove was supposed to be just that
— private — and also secret, with the Stones attempting to pass incognito as the
Cockroaches. But as the nature of the business would have it, there was a leak. It occurred
early in the day Monday after weeks of rumors. And before the day was over, the local
media would claim that "history has been made in Worcester."

Worcester, Massachusetts. That’s how the bill reads for the Stones’ supposedly
secret 1981 tour warm-up gig. Some 275 tickets are distributed from the
windows of unmarked cars driving around town by Ian Stewart, Stones’ tour
personnel and Worcester radio station WAAF staffers distribute tickets to
anyone displaying the station’s logo (T-shirts, hats, bumper stickers, etc.).
The station has announced on the air that the Stones will play, but not where.
However, the secrecy is blown by a much larger, jealous station in the Boston
metro area which broadcast the name of the club upon hearing of little WAAF’s
coup. This brings out 4,000 people, as well as the riot squad with helicopter
assistance. The police offer an intelligent solution and the massed fans hear
the gig through the club’s wide-open doors. Amazingly, this is the first club
gig the Stones ever play in the United States.

I believe the different quoting of the date of the famous surprise gig at Sit Morgan's Cove is because (according to news articles) the Stones didn't roll in to the club until just around midnight.

WORCESTER - For nearly a half century, Sir Morgan’s Cove has survived changing
musical trends, name changes, fires, numerous owners and a surprise performance
by the Rolling Stones.
But when 2 a.m. Sunday rolls along, an era comes to an end when the legendary
Green Street bar closes its doors for the very last time.
Still referred to as Sir Morgan’s Cove, or just The Cove, the club was renamed
the Lucky Dog Music Hall in 1999, before being renamed to The Cove Music Hall in 2015.
“We were paying J. Geils $750 a week and every Thursday I would have to go the
license commission and take out a special entertainment permit to allow them
to play on Sunday,” Mr. Giordano recalled. “At that particular time, you were
not allowed to sit at the bar and you were not allowed to dance. So we had to
take all our tables and put them on the dance floor. And J. Geils used to come
out with Peter Wolf and they used to do a jam session and bring people out of
the audience and have some fun.”
The Cove had a reputation as a gritty rock club. Then one night it became a
legendary rock club. Held up in their practice space at Long View Farms in
North Brookfield, the Rolling Stones were itching to play live in a small,
intimate club. Sir Morgan’s Club fit the bill.
With WAAF 107.3-FM distributing a handful of free tickets, the Rolling Stones
played Sept. 14, 1981, at Sir Morgan’s Cove. However, rival rock station WBCN-
FM was so incensed that a Worcester radio station and Worcester venue got the
“World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band” that the Boston radio station did
everything in its power to sabotage the show by broadcasting the particulars of
the event and encouraging everyone to show up at a place that held only 235
people.
As a result, an estimated 4,000 people lined Green Street that night.
Although Mr. Faucher was informed by the Stones’ business manager that “Mick
Jagger doesn’t like to play for nothing,” the Stones finally did play for
free.
“He came in and talked to me about the Stones playing at the club. I said to
him, ‘Look, what would you expect? It’s a small nightclub.’ And they said,
‘The last place we played in Toronto, they gave us the receipts from the bar.’
And I said, ‘It would break my heart but I couldn’t afford to do that. I’ve
got to say no.’ And they said, ‘Fine,’ ” Mr. Faucher said. “As for bands
coming in the future, did I leverage that? Sure. It was the way it was. It was
business.”
Mr. Faucher kept an interesting mix of bands playing The Cove, including
Albatross, Zonkaraz, Southpaw, Tornado Alley, the James Montgomery Band, the
Mitch Chakour Band, Buddy Rich and Joe Cocker. Mr. Faucher sold the club to
Steve Dunn in the fall of 1983, and Mr. Dunn brought it John Mayall, Canned
Heat, and the Ventures.
In a matter of months, Mr. Faucher and a new partner, Doug Cutler, reclaimed
ownership, celebrating with a show by Clarence Clemons and the Red Bank
Rockers in the spring of 1984.
“Not only was it the crown jewel of the Worcester music scene, The Cove was the
consistent factor in everything around the Worcester music scene,” Mr. Faucher
said. “It’s a fabled history, and what a shame it’s going to be gone.”
In February 1985, Mr. Faucher closed The Cove and transferred ownership to a
group that included famed Boston defense lawyer Richard Egbert, Carl Forrest
and Richard Brody. The Fools were booked to celebrate the club’s rebirth in
May 1985.
In the latter part of the ’80s, The Cove was at times shut down or opened
without any plans for staging shows. Before things returned to normal, the
club lived a short time as Glenda’s Sports Palace.
For much of the ’90s, The Cove lived on the regular bookings of tribute bands
and battle-of-the-bands competitions.
In early 1999, the club reopened with new owners and a new name, The Lucky Dog
Music Hall.
