The Rolling Stones Hold Press Conference In Worcester, MA
appear during a press conference in Worcester, MA on Sep. 24, 1981.
The Stones who had kept the press at bay during their stay in Massachusetts
reward them with an impromptu press conference at Brimfield Airport.
Long View Farm had great logistics being in Worcester County MA with only a short
ride to the Brimfield Airport.
The Rolling Stones skipped Boston on their 1978 and 1981 American tours, but
the band rehearsed for the latter at Longview Farm studio in central
Massachusetts, and opened the ’81 tour with a scorching set at Sir Morgan’s
Cove, a dive bar in nearby Worcester. Capacity was about 150. No one who was
there ever forgot it.

News Photographer Stanley Foreman Hunts for the Stones in Massachusetts
In September of 1981 reporter Bob Keeley and I were sent to the Brimfield,
Massachusetts to find the Rolling Stones. We had gotten word that the group
was practicing out there for an upcoming tour. It took a day or two to find
where the farm studio they were working at was located.
We spent the week hanging around the outskirts of the farm just waiting for a
glimpse of the members. We did see some of the female companions horseback
riding on a couple of those days but no sighting of the musicians.
On Friday of that week word was out they would be flying out of Worcester Air
port. We all waited with many more of the Boston Media showing up. I only knew
Mick Jagger but was lucky enough to get images of everyone in the group. Of
course I had to rely on my good friend, fellow photographer and rock and roll
expert Ted Gartland to ID the other members in my photos.

I loved reading your Beggar's Banquet fanzine and your book "Under Their
Thumb." I couldn't put them down. I felt like I was with you in New York City!
Thanks for your help with the photos, I knew you'd know about them.
The paparazzi photos are cool since they tell more of the story of the Stones.
You, Ron Galella and David McGough made the Stones more interesting by
adding more dimensions to them with your work. I'm amazed you knew the
exact date of the photos.
We're helping to write the Stones history.
The airport pics were just a few more unidentified paparazzi photos until You told the story of them. This fits in a
few more pieces of the puzzle. With you identifying the date and circumstances in the airport paparazzi photos above,
we know there were taken just after the photos below of Mick Jagger, Pablo Ferro and Hal
Ashby in October 1982.
I hope to get all of the 1980-1983 Stones Wardrobe images together in a story book
fashion one day. Here's a couple of pics of Pablo Ferro, Hal Ashby and Mick Jagger working
on the "Let's Spend the Night Together" movie in LA (below).

Ashby was 54 at the time the pic was taken. He looks 75 or 80...

Yeah, it was a good read. The New York City club show was news to me.
From different articles I read, it seems like Hampton wasn't on the original schedule and added later.

Rumors of Stones Concert Fly Despite Collapse of Negotiations

Despite the apparent collapse of negotiations to stage a Rolling Stones public
concert in Boston, rumors of a last-minute Boston-area appearance by the famed
British rock group continued to swirl yesterday.
But the word from Rolling Stones' officials--both publicly and privately--was
that the group had no plans to play locally before leaving Massachusetts late
next week to begin their first U.S. tour since 1978.
Bill Graham, the Stones' national promoter, described the possibility of a
Boston-area show--either a public conert or unpublicized club appearance--as
"possible but improbable."
Added another Stones' source, when asked of the chances for a last-minute
engagement: "You could vacation in Cape Cod for the weekend and it would be
fairly safe."
The chances of a public concert in Boston anytime soon seemed to disappear
yesterday when the Stones, citing security concerns, officially rejected an
invitation from Boston Mayor Kevin H. White to stage an open-air free
performance Sunday afternoon on City Hall Plaza.
Graham said in a telephone interview from New York that the proposed free
concert--which he estimated could draw a million people--would be in "total
disregard for public safety."
"'Free' is an easy word to throw around, especially in this business, but it's
rather dangerous to apply it in rock 'n' roll," Graham said. He added that the
rock group felt "no anger, only disappointment" at the cancellation of two
proposed Boston shows for the 2,800-seat Orpheum Theatre, which he described as
the "righteous place" for a public concert.
Boston officials refused to grant permission for those dates because of
potential security problems. But they have maintained than an outdoor crowd
would be easier to handle.
Discussions of a possible Stones concert Monday at the 4,000-seat Metropolitan
Center in Boston also went nowhere, Joanne Prevost, White's director of
licensing, said in an afternoon news conference. The rock group also rejected
playing at Boston Garden because of poor acoustics.
Afterwards, reports surfaced that Stones representatives had contacted
officials in suburban Lowell about a possible Sunday concert at the 4000-seat
Memorial Auditorium. But the city's acting police chief. John Sheehan,
rejected the idea because of potential security problems--the same reason
Boston officials vetoed two concerts this weekend proposed for the Orpheum
Theatre.
At least two suburban clubs--Mister C's Rock Palace in Lowell and Uncle Sam's
in Hull--acknowledged being contacted by Stones representatives about a
possible appearance but said no dates had been set.
Meanwhile, Mick Jagger and friends were described as "having a great time" at
Long View Farm in North Brookfield, Mass., where they have been rehearsing for
the upcoming tour. Their reaction to the controversy in Boston was said by one
source to be "mild amusement."
On Monday night, the Stones played at the small Sir Morgan's Cove Bar in nearby
Worcester before 300 fans. Eleven persons in a crowd of 4000 waiting outside
were arrested for disorderly conduct.
Boston officials cited that occurrence when banning the Orpheum concerts, but
Graham denied that the Worcester crowd was unruly.
"It was just a kick-ass rock 'n' roll night," he said. "People inside were
fine, the people outside could hear, and everyone went home happy...it's just a
shame that the Stones weren't given the opportunity to communicate with young
people in Boston the same way."
No Boston dates are scheduled on the 23-city, 41-performance U.S. tour because
there are no suitably large music facilities available here, Graham said."

On the evening of Sept. 14, 1981, as a thank you for their stay in the area,
the Rolling Stones previewed their tour with a show at Sir Morgan’s Cove in
Worcester, billing themselves as “The Cockroaches.”
The Stones performed a free two-hour concert for 300 "randomly selected" fans.
Some 4,000 more fans that got wind of the surprise show packed Green Street in
hopes of getting through the doors. But most got no satisfaction.

I wrote to our friend Bill German asking him to identify
images below of Mick Jagger and paparazzi for us.

and paparazzi David McGough (right)
I've nailed down the three shots you sent me of Mick. The two where Mick
is wearing sunglasses were taken on October 14, 1982, at JFK Airport.
As I reported in (fanzine) Beggars Banquet at the time, Mick was returning to
New York from Los Angeles (where he was editing the "Let's Spend The Night
Together" film with Hal Hashby), and, for some reason, his luggage never came
off the carousel. So he was left waiting by his limo, as a bunch of paparazzi
(Russell Turiak, David McGough, and others) snapped away at him. Mick does
seem like he's being relatively friendly to them in these pics (I ran one in
my 'zine back then), but, eventually, he got annoyed and left the airport
WITHOUT his luggage.

here, cooperating with them on some days and telling 'em to
f-uck off the next. In the case of McGough, he was actually
a huge Stones fan, so they tolerated him up to a point.

Ashby in October 1982.
I hope to get all of the 1980-1983 Stones Wardrobe images together in a story book

and quick-cut editing. If you have ever seen a movie, chances are, you saw his work. His art can be seen in over 100
films including the original The Thomas Crown Affair, Philadelphia, To Live and Die in L.A., Beetlejuice, Jesus Christ
Superstar, The Addams Family, Zardoz, Harold and Maude as well as Gus Van Sant’s To Die For, Men in Black,
Let's Spend the Night Together, Bullitt, As Good as it Gets, Psycho (1988) and Good Will Hunting.
He also worked on the first animated color version of the NBC Peacock and also produced and directed projects.
He co-directed Hal Ashby’s 1983 Rolling Stones concert film Let’s Spend the Night Together.
He also worked on Midnight Cowboy as a second-unit director and supervising editor of The Night They Raided Minsky’s.
In the Let’s Spend the Night Together movie notice Pablo Ferro's work in "Going to a Go-Go" in particular.

Stones go video - Broadcast from New York will cap U.S. tour

The Rolling Stones are planning to cap their 1981 U.S. tour on Dec. 18 in New York
with a small-club date that will be simulcast via closed-circuit video to more
than 200 other rock venues across the country are creating a show uniquely
for touts the project's promoter John Schet. Titled "Rolling Stones Rock Roll Party," the
video event will be directed by Hal Ashby who shot footage of four of the tour's
big concerts. Other performers who Scher says may participate in the event are
Muddy Waters. Rick James. Grace Jones and Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Plans
for the extravaganza were hatched last month in San Francisco where Mick Jagger met
with Ashby, Boz Scaggs, tour manager Bill Graham and various technical advisers to watch a
test of the audio-visual equipment. As No Sisters, a hot local stormed through their
songs at the Waldorf. Jagger and company caught the action on a video screen
at a club next door. Satisfied with the transmission's Mick ventured over to
the waldorf, wading through the crowd and dancing to the young band's version of
"Tossing and Turning." "You were great," he told the awe-struck band. "You did
it just the way we would have - not intimidated or anything. It was Just what
the doctor ordered."
The cable concert isn't the Stones' only stab at mixing Rock and Roll, video and film this year.
They're also planning a movie based on the tour as long as it's not just
another in-concert opus.
So when director Ashby asked if he could film some of the tour, he was
told that he'd have to come up with a concept for the feature film above and
beyond the standard documentary. What's the concept? No one knows yet. But Ashby hopes
to have an angle soon.
Bill Wyman happily signed autographs and chat- ted with
the flock of teens who corralled him at a Philadelphia club recently only to
get his ego shot down. At one point, "I noticed I was signing a Beatles album," the Rolling
Stones' bassist recalls. couldn't figure out why they wanted me to sign but I
did it anyway. The next album was a George Harrison solo and I signed too.
Then they started walking and one of the kids said. Thanks a Undaunted by the
stateside flop of his first solo Suls un Rocks Wyman's set to release Back
which he describes as little bit Stonesy. This one hasn't got any cockney
French on it. - King Features

Yeah, it was a good read. The New York City club show was news to me.
From different articles I read, it seems like Hampton wasn't on the original schedule and added later.
