photo by Larry Hulst - Who's on Sax?

Lee Allen

He played a few shows: on October 1 at the Metro Centre (Rockford, Illinois), and on October 3 and 4 at Folsom Field (Boulder, Colorado).

If memory serves, he got stage fright and didn't wanna continue the tour..

Ernie Watts is in the background of one of my Rosemont Horizon pics and he's wearing what appears to be a shirt identical to the one pictured above - same neckline, sleeves, length, straight hem, etc. Might the man in the white shirt & shades above actually be Ernie Watts?

Here is a crop of Ernie from my photo:

I attended 8 '81 shows (starting w/ Philly 1 and ending w/ Rosemont 3) and have not heard of Lee Allen. Why was he hired? Did Ernie have to leave the tour for a bit due to a prior commitment? Any info would be much appreciated smiling smiley

Great questions. Where was Bobby?

From your link: "He (Lee Allen on sax) played three shows in October 1981 with the Rolling Stones: on October first at the Metro Centre (Rockford, Illinois), and on the third and the fourth at Folsom Field (Boulder, Colorado). According to Ian McLagan,[1] who played keyboards with the Stones on the 1981."

One thing I did notice is that out of all of the ghost soundboards we have from 1981 (DAC) there isn't one with Lee Allen.

TooTough wrote in 2013:

btw: about Lee Allen (saxophone)

He played three shows in October 1981 with the Rolling Stones:
on October first at the Metro Centre (Rockford, Illinois), and
on the third and the fourth at Folsom Field (Boulder, Colorado).
According to Ian McLagan,[1] who played keyboards with the Stones
on the 1981 Tattoo You tour, Allen was so bewildered by playing
with the Stones for over 80,000 people in attendance "he [Allen]
completely choked up". Audio recordings of the shows confirm
McLagan. Allen was replaced by Ernie Watts for the remainder of
the tour. wikipedia

Lee Allen (R)

I'll ask around about Lee Allan. I remember the 1981 tour had no saxophone in the beginning of the tour. The Philadelphia recordings saw Ronnie do two lead solos on "Black Limousine" and no sax. Later one solo was replaced by a sax solo.

The Philadelphia recording have a much different feel to the tour than what we well know from the later shows recorded for "Still Life," King Biscuit Flower Hour and the Hampton pay-per-view. The earlier shows were much faster paced reminiscent of the 1978 tour and one of the Philly "You Can't Always Get What You Wants" was very reminiscent of the "Love You Live" version, especially compared to the later shows.

When and where the Saxophone players came in, I don't know.

Maybe his 81 wardrobe is the bestbexample of how Mick views himself as a method actor in rock music.

Keith Richards, backstage USA 1988. Right, Mick Jagger live at Londonís Wembley Stadium 1982Friends Reunited has worked with renowned photographer Denis O'Regan to curate an online gallery of exclusive images of The Rolling Stones.

DUBLIN Dennis O'Regan

Evocative images of the Rolling Stones published
It was a fan’s dream and is now a memory captured in photos.

By David Millward

By day Denis O’Regan was an underwriter in the City, in the evening he was a rock fan and enthusiastic amateur photographer.

Eventually his hobby became a job with Mr O’Regan becoming the official photographer to some of the biggest bands in rock.

They included the Rolling Stones and his evocative pictures of the band’s 1982 European tour have been made public for the first time.

O’Regan’s story started several years before he was engaged by the band when he would take a camera into concerts and grab pictures by rushing to the front of audience.

“I used to take pictures by rushing up to the stage with a camera under my arm, I took pictures of Wings and David Bowie.

“When punk came I was able to get much better access to the bands. You could get in for 50 pence, I took pictures of groups like The Clash.”

He was invited to photograph Thin Lizzy’s tour of Scandinavia before getting the chance to photograph an intimate Stones’ gig at the 100 Club in the heart of London.

He followed the band to America but, despite having a backstage pass, he was unable to take pictures, having his way barred by “an Amazonian woman”.

The same woman met him months later at Aberdeen airport and this time he was invited to become the band’s official photographer for the 1982 tour.

An invitation for a week became eight as he lived cheek by jowl with the band, even travelling to one gig in the same car as Mick Jagger.

“Mick was very business-minded,” he recalled. “He always saw the bigger picture.
“Charlie Watts was the father-figure. He was normally very reserved, but had his moments and the odd one-liner.”

Keith Richards was sociable while Ronnie Wood was, he recalled, seen as the “hired hand”.

The Stones played two NYC dates at Madison Square Garden. I'm guessing that this is one of the nights since in came from the New York Daily News. Another source indicates NYC. As always help is appreciated in identifying these images. Thank you.

A close-up of Keith's boots, 1981 tour. Go six images over.
Often wondered if you can find a pair like this now. I've never seen anything close to them.
