Just posted on the Yardbirds' Facebook page.
This morning another legendary rock n' roll figure, a secret hero really, left us. Giorgio Gomelsky at 82, passed away this morning after battling with cancer last few years, may he R.I.P. Initially known for first managing The Rolling Stones, producing The Yardbirds and bringing blues to Britain in the early 60’s, Giorgio influenced, inspired and also helped kickstart the musical careers of so many including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, John McLaughlin….some of the all time greatest guitarists! And that's just on the surface of this man's multi-layered life. Then of course in NYC he ignited the DIY, underground music scene in his special space on W24th that became the Green Door and later Red Door. Personally, Giorgio was a very good and dear friend, my music mentor and one of the most fascinating people I’ve ever met, whom I owe much of my musical and cultural perspectives to, the work and inspiration he put in my band Barra Libre, the late late hours of incredible conversation, and the space, which was his own home in NY, that he gave us to serve music. “When you serve music, music serves you” - Gomelsky, RIP, you will be missed.
