Crushing news. Just was listening to Blackstar for the first time yesterday. What a great artist; we were so lucky to have him and his creative genius with us for so long. RIP to the Thin White Duke, thank you for bringing us along on your adventures. Truly one of the greats. Sad day.

Not much shocks me, but this did.

Rest in peace, David Bowie.

"Now the dress is hung, the ticket pawned
The Factor Max that proved the fact is melted down
And woven on the edging of my pillow.
Now my Brother lays upon the Rocks
He could be dead, He could be not, He could be You
He's Camelian, Comedian, Corinthian and Caricature
"Shooting-up Pie-in-the-Sky"
The Bewlay Brothers
In the feeble and the Bad
The Bewlay Brothers
In the Blessed and Cold
In the Crutch-hungry Dark
Was where we flayed our Mark
Oh, and we were Gone
Kings of Oblivion
We were so Turned On
In the Mind-Warp Pavilion

Lay me place and bake me Pie
I'm starving for me Gravy
Leave my shoes, and door unlocked
I might just slip away
Just for the Day, Hey!
Please come Away, Hey!"

Koen, the clip from the Fallon show that was posted should help you to understand.
Here it is again: [www.youtube.com]
Apparently the way David Bowie raised his hand before writing the note in the video
resembles something Fallon does on a regular basis.

Love and light to the man who fell to earth. And thanks and praises for all the gifts.

Thanks for the explanation, with sssoul. But I find it really hard to imagine that Bowie would use a gesture from someone like Fallon.

(If my memory serves me correctly, don't you also share your birthday with Bowie?)

It was a joke.

Yeah, I get it is a joke on Fallon's part, that's his job. But my confusion was based on the "Bowie writes in the style of Jimmy Fallon" quote earlier in this thread. I hope that was not a joke.

So sad. An 18 month battle with cancer, kept secret, it seems.
Saw him once in 2004, unforgettable. Gave my tickets to the exhibit "Bowie Is" to my brother in Chicago, couldn't go, he went.

Rest in peace, Mr. Bowie, great artist.

The Rolling Stones said they were "shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of our dear friend David Bowie", in a statement on Twitter:

"As well as being a wonderful and kind man, he was an extraordinary artist, and a true original," they added.

Not sure if this has been posted upthread yet. From Tony Visconti:

"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry."

I'll tell you something, it takes some major cajones to approach death this way. What an amazing, generous gift to his fans. He was without peer.

David Bowie's last release, Lazarus, was 'parting gift' for fans in carefully planned finale
The producer of Blackstar confirms David Bowie had planned his poignant final message, and videos and lyrics show how he approached his death

Something happened on the day he died

Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside

Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried

(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)

I just heard on the radio that his first wife Angie has not been told yet as she is working on some Big Brother type reality show in the UK and they are isolated from the outside. But they said that after today's taping there were gonna pull her aside and inform her. Not sure of when exactly this was transpiring.
