Anorak: Taylor's amp in Kansas City 1981
Posted by: Mathijs ()

Finally found a picture of Taylor's Boogie amp he used at the Kansas City 1981 show with the Stones.

Strange how happy a man can be after finding something so utterly not important to just about anybody. Have been looking for it for 25 years.

Nice Matthijs........was this the reason you couldn't release your book "Rolling Stones Guitars and Amps" yet?

Another guess but that could be "You Can't Always Get What You Want". He laid back all the way, strumming the opening chords. I was afraid he might pass out.

I think he used a capo on the 5th fret on you can't...

Zoom the pic and you'll see the capo. TD was the other pic.

Doesn't look like a capo at all on the neck in that picture to me. I think the dark spot on his hand is just a shadow from the spot lights. Besides if it was it would be up near the 7th fret or so!

I think DP is referring to the coloured picture above. It almost looks like a 15inch speaker in that Mesa Boogie. Did they only have one spare amp for 2 guitarists?

You're right about that looking like a 15" speaker! I know there were a few combos made with them but they are rare. I'm trying to figure out what amp it is that we are looking at...I'm guessing an early mkll customized especially for MT. Here is a similar amp from 1986 with a 15" speaker:

Especially for MT? I thought Taylor was on the road with Alvin Lee and coincidently at the same time same place as the RS, using a spare amp?

Yeah the Alvin Lee story checks out. Perhaps you are right this could be an extra amp Keith and/or Ronnie had sitting around. Prehaps Mathijs has some backstory here. It certainly doesn't look like the mk1 amps they had been using since the Mocambo days. I think a lot of guitarists were discovering the Boogies by 1981 and Taylor was known to have a Boogie (unknown model probably custom) that he used on his 1979 solo album which is why I suggested it could be his.

There aren't that many photos from the shows that Taylor did with Alvin Lee, but in this one you can just about see a Boogie-ish looking amp behind him on the right:

thumbs up Nice find stoneburst! Yeah those Boogie grills were pretty unique.

Something different about that amp on the Stones stage, the mkll's were sligtly taller than they were wide and that amp looks like the dimensions were the same. Might be just the perspective the photo was taken but it's one of the things that screams "custom".

I think George Harrison used a 15" Mesa on his 1974 tour (certainly one of the very first ones made). Hard to tell from photos, 'cause maybe it's the camera angle.

I don't see a 15" speaker. The amp looks like one fo the spares from the tune-up room, which would have been a hard wood Mk1 with 12" speaker. And that always have been the story -he was invited to the hotel, where after some drinks he was asked to guest on a couple of songs for which he used a spare Stones amp.

This is an interesting link about an MK ii that could change history, insignificant as it is:

The search is over, I can stop carving Boogie amps out of my mashed potatoes.

I've never heard the show actually, just a few bits and pieces. Years ago I downloaded a bootleg of it, there may be better sources available now, or even then. But it wasn't anything I was interested in hearing, especially because Taylor was pretty much non-existent in the mix. And the rest of the band sounded like somebody was recording them on an answering machine from the payphone bank. What's the best source of this show?
