He used to take signs from the crowd, yes. He actually picked a bunch of signs out and then decided which one(s) to play. Some of them might have been on the setlist already, of course...

(Example found on YouTube: a sign for "Red Headed Woman" in Melbourne)

Now, I made a request in person before my first show on the Magic tour in 2008. Met him at his hotel in Helsinki, got him to sign my CD cover, then asked "could you guys please do Youngstown tomorrow?" Bruce was like "That's a possibility, I've been thinking about that one lately".

Then on show day when the band left the hotel I stuck this tiny card that said "Youngstown, please" to his hand. He took it.

They ended up playing it - with the full band - for the first time on that tour.

That was magic.

Gnarly!

No Surrender looks to be an apparent shout out to Ukraine, with Stevie's yellow and blue guitar and everything.

Definitely. Protesting the Russian invasion is one reason for No Surrender being the opening song of E St Band's first tour in 6 years.

Like soldiers on the winter's night
with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender!

The other is the song's heavy relevance to the Letter To You album's theme of mortality. Being over 70 and staring at the approaching end of the line. Like the Stones' attitude - Do not go gently into that good night. Let's do this music until we can't anymore.

Well, now young faces grow sad and old,
and hearts of fire grow cold.
We swore blood brothers against the wind
And I'm ready to grow young again.

They've opened with No Surrender every show so far this year, to give moral support to Ukraine, to give the middle finger to Putin... and give it to Death as well, while one is still able to.

Springsteen's following it with his new "Ghosts" and its similarly defiant, exuberant refrain I'm Alive! [after 7 decades, others dropping - of drugs, of natural causes, of a global pandemic], written to be a crowd chant as well.

That pair of songs work well together to open these particular shows. They fit our times.

Burnin' Train with that dirty guitar solo from Steve was for me the highpoint of the first show!

There was an interesting exchange re: ticket prices on BTX. Thought I'd share it here.

Quote

The one lingering question I have from Chris' resignation is this line:

"We hear and have every reason to believe that there will be changes to the pricing and ticket-buying experience when the next round of shows go on sale."

Unless laws are passed to make scalping illegal and/or technology is improved to prevent bots from buying tickets at light speed, prices cannot be changed. Everyone will still pay market value. It's only a question of who gets the market value, the artist or the scalper. Even if the system was somehow changed to place low-cost tickets directly into the hands of fans, fans will end up with tickets that can be sold at 2x or 3x face value, and fans will engage in scalping. The inescapable reality is supply and demand. And it's not Bruce's fault.

That last part is false. See Pearl Jam, etc. Cheap, non-transferable tickets all but stop the issue. The option was available to Bruce, and he didn’t use it.

Non-transferable tickets with ID checks at the door sure would help. I remember they ID'ed me for Pearl Jam in Krakow. I think that was the first time ever for me.

The industry flirted with this in the past decade or so but kinda died out I think because it placed too much of a burden on venues some of which are still grappling with staffing issues post pandemic.

I can easily see it's a lot of extra work.

Nice to see Detroit Medley on the setlist. Sure didn't take long for COVID to rear it's ugly head on the tour. This is where having the huge band will come in handy. Pretty much all the instruments are doubled up except bass & drums. I'm pretty sure someone could play bass & the percussion guy could handle the drums if need be.

Wow...that's terrible on many levels ....hope he fully recovers, and hope he makes a triumphant return to the stage.
Not sure if the show should have even gone on considering his longtime and essential role in the band.
I imagine it would be like seeing the Stones without Keith...or without Ronnie....

They did the whole Born In The USA tour in 1984-85 without Stevie.

Word is Stevie had no symptoms, but bailed out of the show as a precaution after testing positive.

Jay filled in for Max back on the Working On A Dream tour. He was 18.

Max had a commitment with Conan O'Brien.

The band could come out in Slipknot gear & really confuse the geezers haha. I actually like Slipknot when I'm in the mood for heavy stuff. They're a little different.

Good to hear. This tour has already had it's fair share of weirdness starting with the overpriced ticket fiasco, followed by the massive fan backlash, then the shutting down of the Backstreets fan site, and now Stevie Van Zandt MIA with covid! Thankfully it was a mild case and he'll be back soon, and hopefully the bad luck of this tour will have ended there.

Gives new meaning to a "bump in the road", and to happen so early in the tour is crappy...
Articles are now appearing everywhere - from Rolling Stone Magazine to this one on NJ.com:

COVID strikes E Street Band, several members out as Springsteen tour soldiers on

A request for comment on the ill members’ condition, whether COVID had spread to other members including Springsteen himself,
or the status of upcoming performances, was not returned by Springsteen’s spokespeople Saturday morning.

More > Covid

-----------------------------------

Thankfully we now know that Stevie Van Zandt has a mild case, but this article raises other questions regarding other members and Bruce himself.
