I prefer my 45 Decca vinyl single without the Choir intro. The LBC, although content with their contribution, were not over-impressed with the rest of the album's content (Midnight Rambler) and wished to renounce their role in it. However, it was too late. An abbreviated version without the orchestral theatrics is obtainable on bootleg.

Does anyone have a copy of a Rolling Stone magazine article that interviewed Al Kooper and he discussed at length the recording of YCAGWYW?

I listened to 1981 Hampton VA
YCAGWYW and
no sir, no room for young girlie choirs on that stage,
rough tumble lean and dirty,
that one from '81.

Until they introduced the live 'choral version' on stage back in 2012 I always regarded the studio version and the live performances as two completely different things which are both great in their own right (Brussels 1973 still is the best live version but there are lots of others - I do not like the latter long singalongs which destroy the song).
It's the same with 'Midnight rambler'. IMO the studio version is really boring (I listened to it perhaps twice in my life), but the live 'blues' Versions (Hyde Park through Leeds 1971) and the 'rock versions' are two different things. I could not say which one was better, I like both versions.
