Wow. A Jazz thread. Cool cool cool. Put your shades on at night folks. Check out some early Mickey Spillane and Allen Ginsburg (closer than you think re American culture). We're gonna get down here. Jazz, via the Ramsey Lewis Trio, I think, is one of the first music styles that ever turned me on. Love this jazzy tune. Here's two versions of it.

It was the first jazz album I ever owned.

My dad was a big fan of bossa nova and big band music, so I grew up listening to both. Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd were two of his favorites. Byrd used to play regularly at a small club in Annapolis, not far from where I grew up. This album was on the turntable many a Sunday morning.

It's funny -
I've known this track ever since I was 5 or something (I turn 47 in early January); and I only very recently found out that this one is not written by Dave Brubeck at all, but by a guy named Paul Desmond, who played in Brubeck's orchestra in those days... And also that there is a follow-up track, by Paul Desmond himself, named "Take 10".

My ex turned me on to Brubeck. Saw him at Santa Monica City College many moons ago. Watch the video and try and guess how many time signatures their playing at one time. Joe Morello is one of the best drummers ever.
