OT - The unOFFICIAL JAZZ thread....
Posted by: treaclefingers ()
Date: November 23, 2015 02:57

love me some jazz...someone wise (and I forget who they were so I can't give them credit - post here and claim your victory) in another thread opined that coffee, a newspaper and jazz music were the perfect way to spend a Sunday morning and I could not agree more.

SO...let's collect here some worthy entrants to some of the best jazz music ever made.

I'd like to start the ball rolling with this sublime piece from Dave Brubeck...why don't y'all Take Five and give it a listen:

I love coffee, I love the newspaper, I love jazz, I love Sundays, I love Dave Brubek, and I love Take 5.
And I love this reggae version of Take 5 from 1968.

I usually take my coffee on Sundays now with some quiet music so as not to wake the sleeping bloomers. I've been scolded a few times about the volume level. Jazz? Well, don't often turn to it, but I was just listening to this last night on the public radio station...

Wow. A Jazz thread. Cool cool cool. Put your shades on at night folks. Check out some early Mickey Spillane and Allen Ginsburg (closer than you think re American culture). We're gonna get down here. Jazz, via the Ramsey Lewis Trio, I think, is one of the first music styles that ever turned me on. Love this jazzy tune. Here's two versions of it.

And. lest we forget, the Stones going for that jazzy thing. Love the scatting.

"A Love Supreme" hit its 50th anniversary, here is a nice tribute/review of the new 3-disk deluxe edition of it.

It was the first jazz album I ever owned.

My dad was a big fan of bossa nova and big band music, so I grew up listening to both. Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd were two of his favorites. Byrd used to play regularly at a small club in Annapolis, not far from where I grew up. This album was on the turntable many a Sunday morning. smiling smiley

Great thread -- hooray for jazz!

Love all the posts so far, treaclefingers.

Here is a smattering of randoms from me:

John Coltrane - Dear Lord

Billie Holiday & Count Basie - Swing Brother, Swing
(love this recording--an air check before a radio performance--because Billie
is so loose and relaxed, and you can hear how happy she was as she name checks
guys in the band, and how much the guys in the band love her)

Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli - Lady Be Good (1937)

Stuff Smith - You'se A Viper
(if there are kids in the house, this is not endorsement for smoking them tweeds!)

Joe Venuti & His Blue Six - Doin' The Uptown Lowdown (1933)

My favourite guitar player, Robert Normann. This was the very first music video that was made in Norway, btw.

When you want a smooth night time jazz, how about John Pizzarelli - Midnight McCartney?

It's funny -
I've known this track ever since I was 5 or something (I turn 47 in early January); and I only very recently found out that this one is not written by Dave Brubeck at all, but by a guy named Paul Desmond, who played in Brubeck's orchestra in those days... And also that there is a follow-up track, by Paul Desmond himself, named "Take 10".

It seemed appropriate to share that one here with you:

My all-time favorite jazz album.

Here's a live version of St. Louis Blues with the NY Philarmonic in 1956, with W.C. Handy attending this performance. Priceless.

I was privileged to see Oscar live a few years ago. It was a wonderful evening.

My ex turned me on to Brubeck. Saw him at Santa Monica City College many moons ago. Watch the video and try and guess how many time signatures their playing at one time. Joe Morello is one of the best drummers ever.
