LIVE ALBUM TALK: Camden Theatre 1964
Date: October 30, 2015 11:30

Rolling Stones - Camden Theatre

Recorded March 19, 1964:

Seven-inch vinyl EP included with greatest hits compilation GRRR! Super Deluxe edition.

Route 66
Cops and Robbers
You Better Move On
Mona

The show aired May 9, 1964 on Network Three (now BBC 3) and also featured Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames. Stereo broadcasts were not yet available requiring the BBC to broadcast one channel over their radio network and the other on TV. The audience moved their radios closer to their TVs and then positioned themselves in between to get the full stereo effect.

I'm doing the live album talks chronologically by performance, and not by the year of release.

An absolutely superb document of their early live sound! >grinning smiley<

Great to clearly hear who plays what, superb harmonica by Brian on Cops And Robbers, great guitar by Keith on Route 66, amazing tremolo guitar by Brian on Mona.
Mick is great throughout, Bill and Charlie ain´t bad either...grinning smiley

Maybe the sound is a bit TOO clear/polished, should be rougher/tougher w/more upfront guitars and less upfront vocals perhaps - but then again it´s a special radio recording of course.
...and I never liked You Better Move On - sounds like a Swedish dansband...

Great, great performance! Every song is a delight, a pure delight. That alone is worth the purchase of the GRRR!-SUPER-DELUXE-EDITION. Highly recommended, the early Stones at their best, a sheer delight!

Waow,
So you still don't have the extra stuff from Get Yer, Exile, Some Girls and Sticky Fingers? You don't have Leeds 71 either?
Amazing!

The first bootleg I ever bought and still have it. Wish there was more early stuff of this quality.

It's probably one of their best-sounding live albums. That is amazing!

Love Mick's phony american accent on Cops And Robbers grinning smiley

A great set and performance, but I would like to hear the original mono broadcast. The stereo-mix makes for a weaker-sounding recording, in my opinion. It isn't so apparent with Cops And Robbers, but Route 66 lacks the oomph of, say, the Kilburn release from 1965, or the performance that is featured on the EP, Got Live If You Want It and Decembers Children (And Everybody's).

Rhythm' Blues at its best. On a par with their ingenious early studio recordings. And astonishingly: The almost perfect sound quality. I want more of these early recordings.

It wasn't originally broadcast in mono, it was a stereo test transmission.
I'm not aware of a Kilburn recording from 1965.

Pretty cool rock and roll for 1964, tasty stuff.

I am smiling thinking about all of us who have complained about Mick's vocals being too out front on modern Stones records. Doesn't seem to be a problem for this one. smoking smiley

They had an incredible shop in Gamla Stan in Stockholm in 2003 when I saw the Stones there as well. Looked like the owner only had Stones records there smiling smiley
