Susan Tedeschi's versions of Bonnie Raitt's Angel from Montgomery and Dylan's Don't think twice it's Alright are both superior to the originals..

John Prine's Angel From Montgomery actually.

bob dylan's version of "Like a rolling stone" is the best version there is - that's my vote. the stones' version doesn't hold a candle to it.

true, not even close.

I still think that Dylan's version is better. What I meant was that Stones' version on Stripped was surprisingly good.

I didn't misinterpret what you meant. I just don't agree. Stones version is pretty bland.

Stones version is very bland indeed.
Not totally unlistenable, but completely unnecessary.
It's actually quite boring.

Exactly what do you don't like with it? The whole arrangement or is it something else? Mick's harmonica is great imo, and I also like the way Ronnie interact with Chuck.

Crow's and Dylan's respective versions of 'Mississippi': which is the original and which the cover?

Bob Dylan wrote the song and recorded several versions of it during the Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996/97) but was somehow not satisfied with the results. Thus he gave the song to Sheryl Crow who recorded and released it right away. Bob Dylan himself rerecorded the song and released on Love & Theft in 2002.
Three (!) different versions of the song recorded in 1997 were released on Bootleg Series Vol. 8 (Tell Tale Signs) in 2008. One of these versions is a all acoustic take with only two guitars.

Btw: The version released on Love & Theft is a good example that shows why Bob Dylan is a much better singer than Sheryl Crow – while she rather screams and shouts the song (especially during the second half of it) Bob Dylan manages to put so many nuances in his voice and his phrasing that the song, it's story and it's message (if there is any) seem to change all the time (and each time you listen to it). – If been listing to that song for years but I'm never really able to tell if he sings "Things should start to get interestin' right about now" or "Things shouldn't start to get interestin' right about now

I consider Dylan's vocal on Mississippi one of the single greatest vocal performances of his career. I have heard many live versions of the song but none of them comes anywhere near the Love & Theft studio version. It is just such a special performance.

I'll agree with the 1st (can't believe I didn't think of it myself!)
2nd would be a toss up
I might agree with the 3rd if you would have cited Otis instead of Aretha

Along the lines of your 1st suggestion... I'd give Cocker the edge over Traffic on Feelin' Alright

don't know where my brain was; i meant "respect" with aretha!

Come On
Like A Rolling Stone (Boby Dylan) topped by the Rolling Stones or by Jimi Hendrix or not?

No Way José....

Have to disagree with you there Come On. The Hendrix version LARS from Monterey was so good, magical and inspired it even made Dylan change the way he played it! Just listen to the guitar fills he does in that performance, that alone makes the tune best for me, to say nothing of the rest of the tune. His phrasing, energy and dynamics are truly something to behold, imo. Can't say enough about that performance. smoking smiley

I believe you might be mistaken LARS for All Along the Watchtower Naturalust.
Dylan is quoted as saying that Hendrix's studio version is better and was played the way it was meant to be played.
Maybe he said the same thing about LARS, but I don't think so.

I'll say that Hendrx's version of Watchtower might better, but can't agree that his version of LARS is better. '
While it's absolutely a stunning cover, it's just not as powerful and impactful as the original statement imo.

I've had trouble thinking of any covers that are better than the originals, but Watchtower may be it.
When I think of a great cover, say Not Fade Away by the Stones for example, I can't help but think of Buddy Holly's version as superior.
Or Little Red Rooster (written by Willie Dixon) - Howlin Wolf's is better. Or Ain't too Proud to Beg - Temptations are better. Or Carol- Chuck Berry is Better. And so on and so on...
As a matter of fact, I can't think of ANY Stones covers that are better than the originals. Same goes with Beatles covers. Nice try, but....

As for I Fought the Law which was mentioned here, the Clash indeed did a fantastic blistering version, but I have got to go with Bobby Fuller Four version which isn't even the original I just discovered. According to wikipedia:

I Fought the Law

"I Fought the Law" is a song written by Sonny Curtis of the Crickets and became popularized by a remake by the Bobby Fuller Four, which went on to become a top-ten hit for the band in 1966 and was also recorded by the Clash in 1979. The Bobby Fuller Four version of this song was ranked No. 175 on the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004, and the same year was named one of the 500 "Songs that Shaped Rock" by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The song was written in 1958 by Sonny Curtis, and recorded in 1959 when he joined the Crickets, taking the place of the late Buddy Holly on guitar.

Anyways cool thread , and if I think of any covers that are better than the originals, I'll post it here! thumbs up

Yeah I think you may be right about me mistaking Dylans comments on those two tunes. But I still prefer Hendrix's Monterey performance of LARS better than the original. Something about his ripping guitar fills in that tune move me to the core. His chewing gum and engaging the audience is also so powerful I'm always stunned when I see the video. But the audio alone is tops man!

Here, let him bore you for about 6 or 7 minutes, check out those tasty fills between the vocal lines, just wow.

Thanks Naturalust - I'm well aware of Hendrix's version. As I said, stunning version! thumbs up

And his cover of Wild Thing is also intensely good - kind of like a grunge version way before there was grunge - might even be better than the original? cool smiley
And his cover of Killing Floor is like a stampede of gargantuans run amok - intense! eye popping smiley
(Howlin' Wolf's version is better though imo)

I remember seeing those clips either in the Montery Pop movie or the original Hendrix doc. when I was in the 7th grade at a movie theater c.74, and the impact it left on me is still felt.
I now own them all on various dvd's, ready to watch with the flick of a switch - something I couldn't imagine when first seeing them all those years ago.

Nobody's wrong here...it's all opinion and personal taste - similar to that other thread about listing 3 great albums in a row by a band....

edit: Just read through thread, and I see NICOS mentioned Jimi's cover of Hey Joe being better than the original - I'll agree to that!
