Real country, real music. Like Merle, Willie, Vince Gill, others, he doesn't get played on what they call country music radio these days. Here's a few Dwight cuts to give y'all a taste. Enjoy.

From Koen: What is real country music? Well, we could go all the way back to the Carter Family, but for some people to check out as a start, there's Hank Williams (not junior or Hank III), Lefty Frizzell, Kitty Wells, Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash (1950s/1960s era), Ernest Tubb, Bill Monroe, Ray Price, Marty Stuart, Patsy Montana, Eddy Arnold, Waylon Jennings, Doc Watson, Loretta Lynn, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jimmy Dean, Marty Robbins, Charlie Rich, Buck Owens, Dolly Parton, Wanda Jackson, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris, Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves and a host of others. Heck, I'll even throw in Gene Autry and Roy Rogers with the Sons of the Pioneers. You can find songs by these folks and others on u-toob if you wanna check 'em out along with other classic/real country performers.

My question was actually more about how one defines 'real country' music as this phrase was used a few times above. I'm pretty familiar with all those names you listed. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Actually, it's not your ignorance that keeps you from knowing what real country music is, it's the lack of a definition of real country music that would keep just about anyone from explaining it to you. Including myself.

Easiest to say is, what you are hearing on "country radio" and "country music awards shows" is, for the most part, not real country music.

From my point of view, if the song/recording sounds like it was controlled more by the producer & record label than the artist/band who performed the song, it's probably not real country. Amazingly similar to the current state in rock&roll/pop music. If you hear something that sounds like some musicians got together, played from their hearts (not their minds) and wouldn't ever consider using a click track or auto-tune, you're probably a lot closer to real country (or real rock&roll).

Peace,
Mr DJA

There was a similar discussion here a while ago about 'real blues'. IIRC, the criteria were 'the older the more real, or authentic'. But I think even these days there is very authentic blues and country music. That being said, I always find it at least strange to label something as 'real', as if other types are not valid enough.

I agree with what I think is the overall premise of your statement. On country music, I'm no expert that's for sure (it's been close to 20 years since I've done much in that genre). Having played in many blues bands for the past 20 or so years, I know a bit more about that subject. I am sure that you're right that "real" still exists in both categories.

I think another way to describe the difference between what might be better described as authentic and inauthentic may lie in looking at how "diluted" something is from the original form. When one musical form merges with another the resulting product is something new and not either of the original forms. (Did I word that correctly?) Country-Rock is not country. Neither is Blues-Rock blues. Neither is really rock either.

At the end of the day, although the labels may help listeners find a point of origin for their listening, or a way of generally describing to others what they're hearing, I like the fact that, at least where music is concerned, my ears and heart are able to be the final judge FOR ME. I really don't care what anyone (including myself) may label the type of music as, my only concern is do I like it and want to hear it again.

Peace
Mr DJA

Exactly - that is my approach too. I really don't care if it is not 'real' this or that or whatever. If I like it, I like it.

It just dawned on me that, in my posts conversing with Koen, I never addressed the topic of the thread!

Happy Birthday Dwight! Thanks for the music AND the acting!

Peace,
Mr DJA

Dwight broke out in the early eighties when country music was being influenced by the movie Urban Cowboy and punk/new wave ruled the music scene. But his stripped down energetic songs won over many listeners. Here's his nod to The Rolling Stones:

I can help. country music now is what I call "bro country" or "wal mart country". its a bunch of catch phrases strung together to appeal to a certain demographic. there is no heart or soul. the songs half of the time sound like name dropping products on purpose. most of the people who like this never even lived in the country. the fans of this country look almost as generic as the music itself. you can spot fans of this country a mile away.

a way of life, hard time, living in the country, farming, etc influenced a way of music in real country music. no its the opposite. the new country influences a way of life that is so far removed from the original source material its sad

So what about Chris Stapleton? He appears to sing with a lot of heart and soul (based on a clip I saw from the CMA).

He is featured on a Guitar Center Sessions television program from earlier this year. It is still in broadcast rotation, at least in the U.S. Nice performance and retrospective interview.

Remember when "Guitars, Cadillacs" came out in ...'85(???).
Loved it. Kept it! Got rid of lots of vinyl during a move last year. Dwight was safe!
