We've been debating the last classic Stones album, and someone made the comment that a classic album requires every song on the album be a classic. I tend to disagree...

...but it raises a question that I don't know has been debated here: albums from the rock'n'roll era where EVERY song is a classic/masterpiece.

I'll start off with a couple of ideas:

Springsteen - Born to Run
Stones - Sticky Fingers

No such thing. Even before reading through the threat I am sure alot of people are going to try and force albums on the list.

Yo make this argument you would really have to destroy the meaning of what a classic song is.

Nobody will say "Pet sounds?"

Also:
Sgt. Pepper's
Beggar banquet
if it wasn't for Goin' home, of course Aftermath.
Who's next
Any Chuck beery compilation will also be a collection of masterpieces

Oh, yeah! Goin' Home: what a waste of precious space on an otherwise great album! Listen to the vocal track, the one without any musical instruments, and you'll never ever listen to that song again... NEVER! That song hurts!

I am not sure is it was mentioned, but here are a few undeniable classics that I might not even like so much:

Guns N' Roses Appetite For Destruction
Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Tom Petty Full Moon Fever
Black Crowes Shake Your Money Maker
Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon
Michael Jackson Thriller
Peter Gabriel So

Rolling Stone, Uncut, Classic Rock give 5 stars to albums way too easily nowadays. As far as I am concerned, there shouldn't be more 10 five-star albums per year. I am not sure if an album can be called a (timeless) CLASSIC if it didn't produce at least one worldwide hit.

There were no worldwide hits on Let It Bleed, a timeless classic if ever there was.

If we're talking Stones, I'd say Let it Bleed.
...
I love the Kinks, and would say that Village Green Preservation Society is a wonderful album that holds a certain mood through all the songs, even if they are not all 'classic.'

I'd agree with the majority of everyone's choices...I'd throw in the following...

Bob Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes

The Band - The Band

Does Tubular Bells count...it should!

It's really hard to decide if certain albums have ONLY masterpieces on them. Exile? Not sure. ...Pretty much the same with Beggars Banquet -- perhaps my favourite Stones album, but are Factory Girl, Dear Doctor or Salt of the Earth masterpieces? Let It Bleed is almost the opposite -- I think Banquet is a better album but Bleed has pretty much only masterpieces on it. At least as far as songwriting goes -- there are a bunch of songs (Rambler, Live With Me, Love In Vain) that sounded better on Ya-Ya's, for example. Don't know if this makes sense at all...

Dear doctor as a song is no masterpiece, but it fits perfectly on the album.
Factory girl and Salt of the earth are masterpieces because the lyrics represent the mood of the late 1960s perfectly.
But the real masterpiece is the Beggars Banquet Album in its entirety. Classic albums do not consist necessarily of masterpiece songs but each song fits.
Monkey man is really no masterpiece (I even do not like the song). As an individual song it would never have had anything.
Same goes for the Exile album. It is a masterpiece as an albumbut not every song is a classic.

There is only one album where every song is a masterpiece: The Who: Who´s Next.
Maybe I should add Pink Floyd´s Animals & Wish You Were Here. David Bowie´s Aladdin Sane. David Bowie´s Never Let Me Down. Not to forget Sting´s Nothing Like The Sun.

Sandanista would have been a double album masterpiece but side 5 starts to lose it and side 6 is positively sad with kids singing Career Opportunities and dub/backwards version of other songs on the album.

Sad to see that the incredible T. Rex album from 1971 never seems to get much love from Bolan fans, probably because it didn't have any singles on it. But songs like Jewel, Diamond Meadows, Root Of Star, Beltane Walk, and Summer Deep have a unique late psychedelic/pre-glam rock charm that not only show off the warmth of his song-writing but arguably the best of his guitar playing.

Led Zepp III would have been a masterpiece but is let down by the last 2 songs, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp and Hats Of (To Roy Harper) which sound like they were jammed and made up on the spot in the studio. I love it dearly for its edgy straddling of delta blues, chicago blues and folk but I can see why people don't include it up there with 2, 4 and Physical Graffiti.

LOL. Because a lyric represents the mood/vibe of a part of a decade it makes a song a masterpiece? How interesting.

Apart from the fact that I have never heard anyone but you saying that these songs are masterpieces (I like them both, don't get me wrong) I think we should first and foremost define the term "masterpiece" and what makes a song a "masterpiece".

"Rock historians/critics" tend to say that albums like Sgt. Peppers and Pet Sounds are milestones and...yes, masterpieces. Personally I don't think that anyone would miss a song like Within You Without You, Good Morning Good Morning or Pet Sounds (the song) if they wouldn't exist. The Beatles recorded and released a lot of crappy songs, and so did the Stones and any other band. There is no band and artist without a fair share of filler songs.

As I already said, I don't think that there is an album outthere where I don't have the feeling that at least one song is skipworthy or much worse/weaker than other ones.

I find some of these lists here ridiculous, really.
