Seriously! Lennons take on the drugdealer-doctor is almost above a masterpiece with it's odd song-construction...and Dead Flower..pretty boring to play but very attractive to listen to...

I like both, for different reasons, but I must admit I think they both pale in comparison with their companion songs on those albums.

Doctor Robert, a masterpiece? Well, to each his own...

I can live without songs like 'Here, there and everywher' and 'Good Day Sunshine'...but the rest of them on 'Revolver' is Masterpieces to me...

How do you define a masterpiece though?

Next to say, groundbreaking works like Ruby Tuesday, Sympathy For The Devil or Gimme Shelter is SMU really a masterpiece or a solid piece of Stones' songwriting craft hewn from the same rock as Respectable or When The Whip Comes Down. Just asking!

It's not in the same league of the songs you mention songwriting-wise, imo.

But SMU is perfectly excecuted and performed and the groove and its catchiness is unbeatable.

Sometimes when everything clicks, people notice it and it becomes a major hit - like it did.

There is a reason why we're still humming Mannish Boy, Johnny B. Goode, Satisfaction or Start Me Up. Isolated, they're not really masterpieces musically, but they are still better songs than the most clever, emotional, picturesque pieces of music out there.

Now I wonder if the 80's the 90's or the 00's produced songs with such an immediate impact on the listener :
I'd say "No Speak No Slave" (1992) but this one has an unpleasant retro/Exile pt.II feel that I cannot include it.

I guess it's hard to define a masterpiece but I like that. Songs that you can go back and listen to and hear different nuances, layers, tones - a song that perhaps means different thing to different people?

It could also be a song that profoundly moves you and in that case Dandy is right - because it's certainly hard not to move when Start Me Up is played! ><

From the Stones, I would mention "the big four" + Aftermath + "the big two" (SG, TY), but I am not really sure all songs are really masterpieces. Hard to define that word, I find.
However, I think the following is an album full of masterpieces:

Lou Reed - Berlin
(It's actually the only album of Lou Reed I really like very much)

Also:

Nick Cave - No More Shall We Part
Tom Waits - Heartattack and Vine

We've been debating the last classic Stones album, and someone made the comment that a classic album requires every song on the album be a classic. I tend to disagree...

...but it raises a question that I don't know has been debated here: albums from the rock'n'roll era where EVERY song is a classic/masterpiece.

I'll start off with a couple of ideas:

Springsteen - Born to Run
Stones - Sticky Fingers

No such thing, If anyone thinks there is they are minimizing the word classic.

A great album with two masterpieces ("Carry Home" and "Mother Earth") : the Gun's Club's "Miami" (1982).

I do not know all Albums released around the world which might be a masterpiece. For me it is:

Beggars Banquet - Rolling Stones
Hunky Dory - David Bowie
IV - Led Zeppelin

There are quite a few more masterpieces. For me a masterpiece does not mean that all Songs are the best and most famous ones.
A masterpiece is more a kaleidoscope of a band or a musicians which tells his future directions. These three Albums I mentioned and if you listen of all three very carefully do tell you the next decades of the Musical directions all of These bands or musician did go.

As I wrote there are much more master pieces like Queen -Sheer Heart Attack or the very best Album Yes with Yessongs which is was a circuit in ist own and will never be superseed for its time history.

I agree with all the albums listed but also would not forget ELECTRIC WARRIOR by T-REX

Dr. Robert is an excellent song.

The lyrics are excellent

The "well well well" break is amazing.

It has also aged well. Play it next to "Mother's Little Helper" and compare. I could see a band today releasing the song and it being a hit, to whatever extent rock songs are hits these days.

The rhythmic guitars are deceptively simple and I love their tone.

The use of the Dorian mode gives it a distinctive feel.

The subtle, restrained use of the harmonium is exactly right.

Pauls' backing vocals beginning in the second verse add just the right feel.

My verdict: masterpiece.

Start Me Up is a masterpiece.

For their whole careers Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, and Bill Wyman explored various ways of playing around with rhythm. Playing and singing around the beat and one another, with the instrument leading the band being Keith's guitar.

Start Me up is the culmination of nearly 20 years of research and practice with doing this, and it represents the ultimate rhythmic guitar-oriented 3 1/2 minute rock-n-roll single.

Listen to each instrument, including Mick's voice, and how they play perfectly off of one another. I recently have been gaining new respect for Mick's singing on this song, the timing is absolutely perfect. Yes the lyrics to the song are stupid, that's not the point, think about his voice as an instrument.

If you are still struggling to see it as a masterpiece, play it next to an AC/DC or better yet a rock song from Journey or Foreigner or that ilk, again paying attention to the rhythm. As Keith says in "under the influence", "rock" music is essentially a march - the guitar isn't playing around the beat, it's playing on the beat. Now listen to start me up again. That's the sound of "roll," perfectly captured and distilled.
