Albums where EVERY song is a masterpiece
Posted by: keefriff99 ()
Date: September 29, 2015 19:04

We've been debating the last classic Stones album, and someone made the comment that a classic album requires every song on the album be a classic. I tend to disagree...

...but it raises a question that I don't know has been debated here: albums from the rock'n'roll era where EVERY song is a classic/masterpiece.

I'll start off with a couple of ideas:

Springsteen - Born to Run
Stones - Sticky Fingers

Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Van Morrison - Astral Weeks
The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
The Beatles - The Beatles
Neil Young - Tonights the Night
Elvis Costello - This Years Model
Lucinda Williams - West
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F.
David Bowie - Low

..just to start with...

It's really hard to decide if certain albums have ONLY masterpieces on them. Exile? Not sure. The album may be the greatest ever made by anybody, but I'm not sure if Ventilator Blues, Turd on the Run or Soul Survivor qualify as masterpieces. Pretty much the same with Beggars Banquet -- perhaps my favourite Stones album, but are Factory Girl, Dear Doctor or Salt of the Earth masterpieces? Let It Bleed is almost the opposite -- I think Banquet is a better album but Bleed has pretty much only masterpieces on it. At least as far as songwriting goes -- there are a bunch of songs (Rambler, Live With Me, Love In Vain) that sounded better on Ya-Ya's, for example. Don't know if this makes sense at all...

Although I know many people here don't care for it, I'll throw in Boston's first album.

Trying to avoid live albums (Ya-Ya's, Full House, Waiting For Columbus) is difficult.

Although not "Rock" albums, I don't know how often, if ever, I've fast forwarded through something on:

Keb Mo - Slow Down
John Hammond - Wicked Grin
Taj Mahal - Senor Blues

Peace,
Mr DJA

Nobody will say "Pet sounds?"

Also:
Sgt. Pepper's
Beggar banquet
if it wasn't for Goin' home, of course Aftermath.
Who's next
Any Chuck beery compilation will also be a collection of masterpieces

"masterpiece", "classic", these terms have no meaning the way folks are throwing them around.

If I only had to pick one album that qualifies it would be Pet Sounds. Pure genius running all the way through it. Revolver a close second but Yellow Submarine can hardly qualify as a masterpiece - can it?

Oh - and Marvin Gaye's What's Going On of course.

Live with me is more a classic song than Blue Condition which is Ginger Baker trying to sing on key

Live with me is a classic stones track not a classic track.in general.
Anyway I wrote here some albums that have not got bad tracks. Maybe I used a wrong topic. But a perfect album with songs good at the same level does not exist in my opinion.
