TIME IS ON MY SIDE

Time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
Now you always say
That you want to be free
But you'll come running back (said you would baby)
You'll come running back (I said so many times before)
You'll come running back to me
Oh, time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
You're searching for good times
But just wait and see
You'll come running back (I won't have to worry no more)
You'll come running back (spend the rest of my life with you, baby)
You'll come running back to me
Go ahead, go ahead and light up the town
And baby, do everything your heart desires
Remember, I'll always be around
And I know, I know
Like I told you so many times before
You're gonna come back, baby
'Cause I know
You're gonna come back knocking
Yeah, knocking right on my door
Yes, yes!
Well, time is on my side, yes it is
Time is on my side, yes it is
'Cause I got the real love
The kind that you need
You'll come running back (said you would, baby)
You'll come running back (I always said you would)
You'll come running back, to me
Yes time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Oh, time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
I said, time, time, time is on my side, yes it is
Oh, time, time, time is on my side
Yeah, time, time, time is on my side

Love it! Good timing – I just did this one for the IORR recording project smiling smiley

The combination of the melodic, catchy chorus and the bluesy bridge is somewhat unusual, but very dynamic and interesting, imo.

An early day classic that they re-arranged beautifully for the 81/82 tours. Did they also play it once on the Licks tour?

I especially love the 1981 versions with Keith's raggedy but melodic backing vocals.
Keith keeps holding this piece of music up for us to admire from all angles.
On the Honeymoon Tapes he says "I wish I'd written that one"

Thinking about this track brought it home that the major difference between the Stones and The Beatles in their early days is that the Stones relied on covers to propel them into the charts.

Come On, Time Is On My Side, I Wanna Be Your Man, Little Red Rooster and It's All Over Now.

I can't think of any other great bands that released so many covers versions as singles to establish themselves.

That said, what a cover it is. And a great topic too, with its wider meaning of the new young idea versus the establishment.

I guesss TIOMS can also be seen as the moment that first launched Keith into the public eye with that amazing solo of his.

Left to gather dust for about 18 years the song made a specatacular comeback in 1981 and 1982.

I love that version too.
This song to me is the sound of the Rolling Stones 1.0

The version from 81/82 is brilliant. One of their all time live highlights.

I'm not a big fan of their studiorecording though.

The live versions from the 60s were also great.

Actually the difference is that in their early days the Beatles (not called that yet) didn't have a record contract;
if they had they would've been recording covers too. That's how musicians start out.
The Beatles had been together for 5+ years when they got their first record contract,
and I strongly recommend a close look at the list of tunes they auditioned with. They were desperate!
The Stones hadn't even been together for a year yet when they got their first contract; of course they were still playing covers.
And they weren't desperate, so they were playing covers they really loved.

But I digress, sort of. The young Rolling Stones sure knew worthwhile music. We kind of take that for granted but it's a great wonder.
They didn't cover a piece of slop. They covered Time Is On My Side. And look at 'em go :E

But they did record covers. Their first albums consisted of a mix of covers and own compositions.

Yes. My point was that in the first 18 months of their existence that band was also "relying on covers" -
not to "propel them into the charts", however, because they weren't making records and had no hope of charting.
This is getting too far off a very worth topic, though.

The Winos' renditions of this number were also brilliant, hot and beautiful.

Actually, their first single was Come On and it wasn't the greatest cover. But I get your general point.

The next time I will not be reading your post so quickly. A good point, of course smiling smiley

Ahhhhh, a new Track Talk at last!! Thank you Nicos.

Obviously TIOMS is one of the finest cover songs in the Stones catalog. Especially remarkable in how deftly it balances sweetness and yearning with rough, street-smart sass. That glorious chiming guitar elevates the song to the stratosphere, completely eclipsing the original “organ” version.

And no track better encapsulates the Stones’ seemingly perpetual staying power. Timeless.

Perfect soundtrack of their retro comeback/pre Mick solo career. It is THE song of that year for the Stones, 1981, not the B-side to Start me up but the inner sleeve of Start me up. That said, I never liked it! It's a format song. To me it's completely stuck in the pre Stones era really. It's not a bad song but just not my Stones.

Legendary cover tune by the Stones - everything about it is top notch.

Yes, and the cover of the cover version that Keith did with Sarah Dash. Beautiful, soulful stuff.

Loved seeing and hearing it live in the 81 tour (I believe)
The visuals on the screens flashed back to them playing it in the sixties..

Have been looking for them to repeat the song and the visuals ever since..

I don't really like the Stones' version very much: it works better as a woman's song:

Irma Thomas, for instance..

or Sarah Dash with the Winos:

or Ronnie Spector:

Indeed some nice versions there Green Lady, Thanks for those. I also like them better than the Stones version. Sarah Dash nails it with the Winos! I do like the Stones version too although I kind of look at this tune as oldies music. eye popping smiley

I do however really like the chords and structure of the tune, really a well put together song.

And thanks for continuing the Track Talk NICOS, well done. Nod to Rene for all the work he has put into them. Clearly one of the best thread ideas on iorr.

Love the 81 version, especially on Hampton. Mick's intro This is one we did when we were real small!
I recall seeing a picture on this site of Brian playing the organ and the bottom said something to the effect of Brian at Chess playing the organ intro to Time Is On My Side? I always assumed it was Stu but maybe it was Brian?

The TAMI show version is mindblowing. This young band was firing on all cylinders back then.
