A really very very very bad one, however, was one about Keith Richards: "Keith Richards: The Origin of the Species" by Julien Temple. That was just pathethic and the blame lies mainly on Julien Temple in his choice of hectic editing, in his attempt to find meaning were there is noone ("rock n roll was caused by the nazis" or something idiotic like that) and his ridiculous way of filming (e.g. every time Keith is in the picture, he is in black and white and blowing out smoke in slow motion because "that's how cool he is").

Never heard of this one. Usually Temple’s docs are excellent (like the Pistols and the awesome Dr. Feelgood docs). Strange how this misfire could’ve happened.

Great thread; is there a website to go to have access to these documantaries? Or better just chase them on the net?

Best:
- Muscle Shoals
- 20 Feet from Stardom
- Miles Davis: The Birth of Cool
- The Wrecking Crew
- Country Music mini-series by Ken Burns

Worst - "Until The Light Takes Us": Had to turn it off, bad music, ignorant people.

Yes, I agree that his documentary about the Pistols was very good.
But this one about Keith was terrible. Especially, when you compare it with Under The Influence, which I thought was very good.

The recent Ken Burns series "Country Music" was very good.

Worst: Almost all of the "Breaking The Band" episodes.

Bad acting, inaccurate information, etc.

The Van Halen episode was particularly bad.

I saw That Little Ol' Band From Texas the other day (about ZZ Top of course), and I found it quite good. Informative and in a relaxed pace. The only thing is, you need sunglasses to be able to watch it or their dentures will blind you smiling smiley

There's been a couple of good ones about Lynyrd Skynyrd throughout the years with the most recent being If I Leave Here Tomorrow. Via Rolling Stone > Lynyrd Skynyrd

One that I didn't like much was It Might Get Loud. While Jimmy Page was great, the rest with Jack White and the Edge was boring and a bit self indulgent.

What are the chances that 25×5 will ever be released on DVD?
'

It is a bit outdated now that we have Crossfire Hurricane

CROSSFIRE HURRICANE stops in 1981, with some live footage from BRIDGES I think at the end so... 25 X 5 is more up to date, actually.

"Beware Of Mr. Baker" comes to mind as a good one I've seen recently.

I still want to see the Linda Ronstadt one.

As for all-time favs...

Hail, Hail Rock and Roll
No Direction Home
25 x 5
Long Strange Trip
Bittersweet Motel (Phish)
I Am Trying to Break Your Heart (Wilco)
Sound Breaking (PBS Series)
Jazz (Ken Burns)
Country (Ken Burns)

A couple I didn't like much...

Life of Riley (BB King) - pacing wasn't great
Crossfire Hurricane - ZERO mention of Ian Stewart

Always thought some of the old VH1 docs were very good. Not sure if they’re around anymore. They never did one on the Stones unfortunately.

On the 7th day God created The Rolling Stones

I've never been a Skynyrd fan. Don't own any of their records. Would switch stations when one of their songs would come on the radio.

But when that film was on cable, it recorded it on the DVR and watched it. And I've re-watched it again and again. I love that flick. It made me re-think them and appreciate their music.

That, my friends, is evidence of what really makes a great documentary. If it has the power to change your mind.

It's ADTL from Beacon, 2006.

Thanks everybody for the reminder of a few I have forgotten to see.

Here are two feelgood documentaries I have enjoyed.

"The story of Anvil" (even if not your style, spend a minute watching the trailer. Its not what you expect):

Searching for Sugarman (Rodriguez):

And that rendition held up as surprisingly fresh, compared to the 1981-clip before it! smiling smiley

Beautiful Noise: Doc on the shoegaze bands of the 80s - 90s. Cocteau Twins, MBV, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride and heaps more.

The best:

I think that the first Rolling Stones documentary by Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher from 1982 is still one of the best, because it truly captures the spirit of the band. Is that film available online somewhere?

Charlie Is My Darling is a masterpiece, too.

Then Dylan's Don't Look Back, of course. And Renaldo & Clara, even though it is not a documentary as such.

Also Lemmy (2010).

Ramones, End Of The Century (2003).

Joy Division (2007).

Doors, Feast Of Friends (1968).

Billie Holiday, The Long Night of Lady Day (1984).

Neither best or worst, just a few missing here I think deserve honorable mention:

Supermensch, The Legend of Shep Gordon

Who The F**k is Arthur Vogel - Some great insights into how the modern concert business developed.

Does Humor Belong In Music - Frank Zappa

Tantrums and Tiaras - Elton John

All You Need Is Klaus - Doc on Klaus Voorman

A Matter of Trust - Billy Joel's trip to the USSR

History of The Eagles

The Jeff Beck Story

Michael Jackson - Bad 25

Still Alive - The Paul Williams Story

Rush - Beyond The Lighted Stage

Who is Harry Nillson?

and finally....

This is Elvis.

Being cooped up, as most of us are, I got a Netflix subscription partly on the strength of the music Docs on there.
In the last week I've watched a couple of real stinkers:

Shot! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock allegedly about the photographer/ligger Mick Rock. A total yawn from start to finish

Clarence Clemons: Who Do I Think I am? Sadly, a very poorly made movie about one of Music's great characters. I was looking forward to this one but the director just didn't have a clue about his subject.

Of course "Gimme Shelter" but on the second place: "New York Doll". A documentary based on the life of New York Dolls member Arthur Kane. The central focus of the film is Arthur's life after conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after struggles with alcoholism, drug abuse, an attempt at suicide. , Kane had plans for touring with the reunited Dolls, but plans are cut short by his unexpected death from leukemia.
Sad sad sad
