I remember buying the Start Me Up 45, looking at the cover and thinking WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THOSE GUYS.

yeah, the dog leg in the high heel was a bit disturbing...but sort of uber cool.

I always thought it was a goats foot (or hoof) - or at least that's what it resembles - which makes it even more disturbing,
But I'm not an animal foot/hoof specialist, so what do I know?

you sir, are probably correct...and we are now finally finding out what happened to some other parts of 'that goat'.

Ahh... it was just an assumption.
Anyhow, maybe one of the goats arms will be used for an upcoming Stones release? Or maybe a goat tail?

A goat with arms? Now that would be disturbing!

Lol yeah...didn't quite think that through.
BUT, after a bit of research I found out they do exist - and some of them play guitar! smiling smiley

Acoustic: Goat plays the guitar

And electric: Jingle Bells by Jemima the Goat

I have to address the silliness of the few that somehow claim Tattoo You is better than Sticky Fingers. It is beyond laughable ... To start, the slow songs on Sticky Fingers: I Got The Blues, Sister Morphine, Wild Horses, Moonlight Mile are far better than the slower songs on TY, it's not even close or comparable actually, it's 2 different worlds.

Then you have Brown Sugar, Sway, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch, You Gotta Move, all such brilliant tracks, that perhaps only Slave on side A comes close, with Start Me Up close behind.

So stop the crazy talk please!

Ah, don't tempt me. Of course, I could now list all the great songs on TY, but I guess you could find the song-listing of TY on wikipedia yourself.
Let's just say that, admittedly, the only song on TY which is not brilliant, Hang Fire, is worse than anything on SF. Then again, SF doesn't have a B-side even close to the B-side of TY, so, you see, TY is still a winner.
And, moreover, no, I don't think You Gotta Move and Sister Morphine are brilliant, and, yes the solo on Knocking is wonderful, but the rest of the song is not really working for me.
All of this is entirely subjective, of course, as GasLightStreet already pointed out. What's maybe less subjective is that TY covers a wider range of music styles than SF. But I guess you won't agree with that either smiling smiley.
Final comment: TY has Heaven. I rest my case.

How many guitars are there on Dance? It's brilliantly done, but there must be 6 or 7 guitars in there..

I dunno. I haven't listened to it in that way for quite some time. There's gotta be at least 4.

There are very few guitar overdubs on TY compared to SG and ER.

Great record but with more fillers than the overall production reveals. Imo: Black limo (i never understood the love for this middle aged suburban family boogie), Heaven (lurks among the b-side gems), little t&a (love the vocals and the music, hate the stupid lyrics), Neighbours (ok as a filler, nice chords but cant stand Micks macho vocals), Hang fire (ok as a filler but too Springsteeny happy go Saturday in the middle of the week).

Ok, I bite:
* Black Limousine: it's a simple blues-rocker alright, but the rhythm is exactly right, as only the Stones can do, the solo is great, and that extra half-bar somehow gives it an extra push
* Heaven: it's one of the more experimental songs they have done (without counting their mostly disasters of TSMR) and it's just a very good song, the chords, the atmosphere, the voice. It's completely non-standard Stones, which is what they used to excel at: bringing out something quite different but still sounding like them.
* Little T&A: like most of Keith's songs, you shouldn't read the lyrics, just focus on a few cool lines ("the patio ain't dry") and forget about the rest
* Neighbours: Mick Jagger is indeed completely overdoing it, but it's clearly done for fun. Humour is a personal thing, I guess. Some people find Faraway Eyes funny which I don't. I like Neighbours. Moreover, the guitars, the breaks, the structure of the song is somehow fresh and unpredictable.
* Hang Fire: I agree with you there. Weak song. Comparable to Lies on SG.

Hang Fire is one of my favourites on TY. The sound, the drive, the playing, the fantastic vocals. Keith's solo is gold - the rhythm playing is brutal. Everybody is locked in.

A superb rocker (and one of the most fun Stones-tunes to play, I learned).

Well, perhaps it's in the way that you look at it otherwise. For example, I'll give you that the TY version of Black Limousine is a bit... well, it's a thousand times better than the crap they put on the SOME GIRLS bonus disc.

But live... it was excellent - more so in 1995.

Neighbours is killer. Hang Fire is fantastic - just as Lies is. How anyone can say those songs are weak needs to have their brain examined!

Ah. Well maybe I should try to play it. It's true that sometimes analysing a song gives it a new perspective. Still, "one of your favourites", really? Between so many to chose from?

I would, but PET scans are expensive. So, for the moment, I will just skip Lies on SG and Hang Fire on TY and hope for some cure. Maybe Dandelion's suggestion of trying to play it will be a therapy.

OK but what is so good about Hang Fire then? I know it's fun to play just like the far superior and underrated Let me go.

Because it rocks. It's got a great chug to it, some very nice guitar work. The lyrics are hilarious. It's just a kickin' tune.

I guess in a thread about Tattoo You its only to be expected that many of the participants do like the album a lot.
To me, Heaven is probably the least favourite track, I compare it to other, untypical Stones tracks like Feel On Baby, Indian Girl, Blinded By Love, Sweethearts Together and songs like that. A tad sentimental if you ask me. Which brings me to the recent realization when playing Sticky Fingers that I used to like Sister Morphine, but now I think it's a little bit sentimental too, in a, well, whining fashion. Another song, that I have to admit I never really liked, is Wild Horses.
Ok, so, now that Ive offended just about everyone here, the thing that I'd like to stress is how good the lyrics on Tattoo You are. Even the most cliché'd (is that a word?) subjects do have this rather cynical side to them, which gives them a certain poignancy which I enjoy very much. You can find this in almost every song, especially No Use In Crying, Tops, Worried About You, Black Limousine, Hang Fire.

One thing I would not call "Sister Morphine" is "sentimental whining".

One needs to listen to Heaven with a great stereo system (or headphones)and get lost in the hypnotic groove.
My only complaint is that it isn't twice as long.

The music has its merits, also the vocal delivery by Mick is great. But the actual lyrics, not so great I think.
