Emotional Rescue This was not an album cover that people loved. Fan reaction was typified ...

Thanks Lien for the link! I remember having read the review, but "forgot" about it.
The album cover is a typical example of "following a hype". Not really a big thing (I didn't like it), because what really matters is the music.
Personally I like the variety of songs. Some great, some okay, some "so so", but all in all always enjoyable to listen to.
I was pleasantly surprised when they played Emotional Resque in Abu Dhabi thumbs up

I always rated the ER cover as one of the worst album covers ever - not only for the Stones. It's just aweful, and I never tried to find out what it's meant to be or who's to been recognized in those dubious images.

That cover is as UN-emotional as it could possibly be.

The images are boring, and the fonts don't convey any kind of human feeling.

I think a big reason they went that way was to mask the beard Mick was sporting.

It doesn't match the feel of the music.

Only thing worse than the cover, is the music video using the "technology" for Emotional Rescue.

But there was also a "normal" version of the video:

Crazy cool to think that the lower two faces are actually both Ronnie...

Horrific cover - yet insanely identifiable. I actually like it, as well as the back cover (and the original logo was used).

Given what else was available, perhaps one of these would've been more suitable.

This button pin (pin button? WTF are these things called?) is interesting.

this should have been the cover

and i think there called pin back buttons or badges (maybe there's some regional difference in what there called too)

you know what would be neat is if someone who has the photoshop skill could de-thermolize the cover and recrate it with similar shots of the stones (if it hasn't already been done before that is)

It occurred to me that one of them was left out, and I always assumed it was Ronnie as he was the new guy.

Wikipedia has nothing... ChatGPT gave me the names of all 5 musicians! When I told it there were only 4 it said:
The cover of "Emotional Rescue" features thermal images of only four of the band members' faces. These members are:
Mick Jagger
Keith Richards
Charlie Watts
Ronnie Wood

Bill Wyman's face is not included on the cover.

I have a hard time believing Bill's the outlier...anyone know the real deal?!

Bill is shown on the back cover. I think they picked the front cover images based on which pictures looked best (while Mick, no doubt, made sure that one of his portraits was included). I always liked the cover of Emotional Rescue, because it is instantly recognizable, works as a piece of (almost abstract) art and does not follow any obvious trends in art or design of the era. In fact it is an intelligent visualization of the title of the album, because the photographic technology that was used to create the images (thermography) makes a person's emotional state visible by capturing the temperature on the skin, which changes as a person's emotions change. Thoughts and emotions can be hidden, but thermography makes the invisible visible. One of the most thought-out artworks in the band's discography.

The cover images remind me more of going to the hospital for an X-ray .... so rather no good emotional feelings.

I'd like them to thermalize the cover of ABB.

ok but if i could choose one that might look intersting i would choose the cover of black and blue

just to be clear i don't hate the thermo cover i just thought it be interesting to see an alternate version of it without the thermo effect

A thermalized cover for Tattoo You or Goats Head would probably blow our minds.

I believe clockwise from top left...Mick, Charlie, Keith, Ronnie

Even back in 1980 they were leaving Bill out of the shots, though at least he wasn't airbrushed.

I seem to remember that the LP originally came shrink-wrapped with a full-color poster that could be folded in any of various numerous ways to create, theoretically, dozens of different, alternative album "covers." Problem was, the poster consisted entirely of thermographic images, so no matter which way you folded it, you ended up with something that wasn't much of an improvement.

In the early noughties, I scooped I think 3 Emotional Rescues, still sealed, with that full coloured poster on the outside on Ebay. I always thought that was kind of cool. I remember later in the decade you still could buy ER, but it no longer had the poster.

I like the cover, actually. Some Stones covers are worse than this one, methinks.

A couple of years ago I pointed out that apparently many people here didn't get the inner sleeve with the lyrics printed on it, like I did (plus the poster of course). The Virgin remaster (paper sleeve reproduction) didn't have the inner sleeve, as the more recent vinyl edition box set didn't.

I can see how at that time people found the cover ugly, but over time I don't think it's so bad. It's certainly not their worst. Ever since Tattoo You, their album covers have been much much worse than ER.
I guess the same goes for the music. Not as great as Some Girls. Certainly not as great as Tattoo You, but in many ways it's an enjoyable album, it feels like a unit, and rather pleasant to listen to, compared to the post Tattoo You albums.
(Not to say that the post Tattoo You don't have their moments.)

I never gave a hoot about the cover, then, or
now.

All I know is that I, and everbody I knew,
was delighted with the music when it came
out, and I still love the album after all
these years.

To this day the album gets more play time than,
for example, "Exile On Main Street".

I bought the "Hackney Diamonds" CD and after
several months it is still sitting on my dining
room table, unopened, and wrapped in it's original
cellophane. I have not had a desire to listen to
it, knowing what the last several Stones albums were
like, from 1994 to the present. This was not the
case with "Emotional Rescue", which was opened and
listened to immediately after purchasing.
