Was this a European release? I've opened 2 original Emotional Rescue's through the years and they only had a plain white inner, no lyrics, poster wrapped on the outside.
UNDERCOVER was their last good/great album cover, to me, in terms of content, and it oddly matches the sound of the album, ha ha, at least to/for me it does. Since then they've been horrific. They gave up caring about the art of the album cover. BRIDGES is interesting and not as stupidly cartoony like VOODOO but ever since DIRTY WORK they've been the bottom of the pile. From IORR through U it was a great run of artwork for the LP covers.
EOMS and GHS are a bit off compared to BB-SF, although the messiness of EOMS indeed goes with the music.
Since you haven't listened to it, as that reads, then you don't know what they sound like "to the present".
What a weird thing to say.
If your context that keeps you from listening to the new LP is VOODOO-BRIDGES-BANG then you're way out of touch.
You need to open up HACKNEY DIAMONDS and play it. It's excellent.
You're right that the cover (and the music minus 4 songs) of Undercover is not so bad either. I think EOMS is one of their best covers and indeed very appropriate for the music.
I don't know why they stopped caring about the covers after U. Because people don't care about albums anyway?
I believe it was a German release only. Also, some other LPs had lyric sheets that American releases didn't have, either (Some Girls, Tattoo You, Undercover and Black And Blue).
That's an interesting aspect. Tour posters seem to be more important in the, well, really, it's a wash. 1985 or so onwards... included album covers in posters but, maybe someone can point elsewhere but it seems that U2 started using (or Polydor/Island at the time, now both with UMG) pictures within the framework of... yet Def Leppard did that with HYSTERIA.
It's all very interesting, no matter what and where and how: of course it expands beyond the album cover, which used to matter. HACKNEY DIAMONDS is horrible... yet "we" know it's The Rolling Stones.

Since the art of the time length of the album has come back perhaps to drive the album, regardless of format, the artwork is next.
I can only hope, because it was such a big thing, that it DEFINES that moment, no matter how brilliant or ugly!!!! The Rollin Stones absolutely could've done better with HD but if that meant a cover similar to A BIGGER BANG, well, forget it. They lost an opportunity to pull something as simple as SLIPPERY WHEN WET.

Don't know for Germany but when ER came out in Austria it first didn't have a lyric sheet either. However, the pressings available in the mid-1980s in Austria had it (lyrics printed on the inner sleeve). My copies of SG and B&B (bought in Germany came with lyrics, and so did TY and U (bought in Austria).
Anyone here recall the claim back then that ER was recorded/manufactured using a new technology so that copies on cassettes made from the LPs would be distorted by some sort of continuous beep sound? Apparently the Stones' take on "Hometaping is killing the music industry" (although back then unknown in Europe)? Of course the first thing I did was to transfer the LP to a cassette, and all was just normal ...
I found it a bit cheap of them back then to try to raise sales with such a cheap lie. Nowadays I wonder if they knew about that at all (Mick maybe), more likely something their PR department (or that of the record company) came up with.
The poster I found pretty cool (still do), even if it had nothing to do with the music on ER. Somehow reflects the early video experimentations in the seventies.
Because it's outright stupid dumb. The title is pathetic. HONK is really bad but not as badly stupid. There's zero reason they couldn't've come up with better titles for each yet alone artwork.

After Hurricane Katrina I wasn't able to get to a record store when A BIGGER BANG was released, mostly because I lost track of time.
I was somewhere and after a week or so of running around I was able to turn on my laptop and someway, probably YouTube, there it was -
A BIGGER BANG.
I spent 3 hours listening to it. I was floored.
Of course I was, my life had just been turned upside down and flipped over two more times.
I got A BIGGER BANG after moving to Fairhope, AL. In October 2005 I thought it was the best Stones album since UNDERCOVER. It was a relief to listen to. Friends dug it, it was a raucous album.
About a year later I settled down my troubled hurricane mind and got back to Louisiana and, ha ha... ABB was put on a shelf.
ABB is not a great Stones album. It's also not an awful Stones album. And it does have a lock in time for me but that doesn't mean it holds any favor - I'd rather listen to ER, TY or U.
Having dealt with a disaster that affected many friends along the Gulf Coast I can only imagine how anyone that got SOME GIRLS in 1978 was crippled in their identity by 1980's EMOTIONAL RESCUE and how that must've altered their life.
How sad.

honest question about your view of emotional rescue
hypothetically if it had been released after dirty work or just before some girls would your judgement of if have been as harsh?
or put another way is your current low opinion of the album in part at least based (as i think you imply) on it being a disappointing follow up to some girls or because it really is such a bad album?

Leaving Hackney Diamonds unopened on your dining room table is your loss, no one else's. As well as being peculiar behaviour. It's a great album. Unlike any of the others since 1994, but of course you'll never know that.

Well, I think the art of album cover - like the content as well - went downhill when the CD took over. There was no point any longer try to design something more ambitious to those small plastic boxes. Just make it simple and distinctive. No one would any longer really look at and study those covers, they were meaningless. STEEL WHEELS, FLASHPOINT and VOODOO LOUNGE are good examples of that new policy. All of those 'let's just put tongue there' releases are pretty effective to tell the point: 'hey, it is a new Rolling Stones release here!'
My absolutely favourite is the gorilla one! That's pure genius!
(And probably the first cover since the old days - all the way to UNDERCOVER- that had a controversial bite on it, like they once almost always had.)

I found it quite contemporary and cool when I got hold of it back then.

I bought the "Hackney Diamonds" CD and after

Since you haven't listened to it, as that reads, then you don't know what they sound like "to the present".

If your context that keeps you from listening to the new LP is VOODOO-BRIDGES-BANG then you're way out of touch.
You need to open up HACKNEY DIAMONDS and play it. It's excellent.

Do you find that a bit odd? Implies no listening to HACKNEY DIAMONDS online or Apple etc.
After Hurricane Katrina I wasn't able to get to a record store when A BIGGER BANG was released, mostly because I lost track of time.
I was somewhere and after a week or so of running around I was able to turn on my laptop and someway, probably YouTube, there it was -
A BIGGER BANG.
I spent 3 hours listening to it. I was floored.
Of course I was, my life had just been turned upside down and flipped over two more times.
I got A BIGGER BANG after moving to Fairhope, AL. In October 2005 I thought it was the best Stones album since UNDERCOVER. It was a relief to listen to. Friends dug it, it was a raucous album.
About a year later I settled down my troubled hurricane mind and got back to Louisiana and, ha ha... ABB was put on a shelf.
ABB is not a great Stones album. It's also not an awful Stones album. And it does have a lock in time for me but that doesn't mean it holds any favor - I'd rather listen to ER, TY or U.
Having dealt with a disaster that affected many friends along the Gulf Coast I can only imagine how anyone that got SOME GIRLS in 1978 was crippled in their identity by 1980's EMOTIONAL RESCUE and how that must've altered their life.
How sad.

I think A Bigger Bang and Emotional Rescue are two of their worst albums along with Dirty Work.After Some Girls, Emotional Rescue was a huge letdown

Part of is the drop off from the great Some Girls.But half the songs I think are bad,Indian Girl, Where the Boys Go,Dance, Emotional Rescue, Send it to Me , Down in the Hole.I really only like All About You and Let Me Go.
