Should we have sympathy for the devil? Pros and cons?

Seeing that it's fiction, why would it matter?

sympathy can mean pity for or understanding of someone

sorrow or affinity

now, sympathy for the devil?

the song seems to be asking for affinity, no?

"have some courtesy" "use all your well-learned politesse"
mostly about respect i would say. respect his power, never underestimate it.

Yes...after all, it was you and me. If there is such a great thing, the devil exists in us all and everyone deserves some courtesy. Otherwise, the midnight rambler will stick a knife right down your throat, and baby it hurts!

I have sympathy for the song!!

And the movie version: Sympathy for Jean-Luc Goddard

But let me attempt to respond to the question. Was it on Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle or the Voodoo Lounge tour
that the lyric "am I insane"? started appearing? I'm quite intrigued by the idea of Lucifer beginning to doubt his/her sanity -
I mean, who does Satan turn to to get a reality check, you know? It's not easy! eye popping smiley

And even when s/he does get him/herself locked up, of course modern psychiatry requires humane treatment,
which suits the d/evil just fine. These are not comfortable thought experiments.

I love the Rolling Stones.

i love this concept!

because if lucifer is insane, who else of his peers may also be
or is lucifer measuring his sanity or insanity against that of his peers and his creators?

it's a real brain-bell jangler

i don't recall, and to be honest i thought he was saying "you're insane" but you know these things much better than i do. either way, it was a nice flourish that mick added. as for modern psychiatry, i wonder what anti-psychotics would do to lucifer? lol.

If you believe in supernatural beings...

I can never understand people who adopt Satan worship, although I do realise some do it as a reaction to having been horribly oppressed by the Church. Satan represents nothing but delight in human misery and desolation - pain, affliction, loss, suffering. It/s/he is not at all about freedom or pleasure. He is called the Prince of Lies for good reason.

yes when taken literally it's a little odd - if something is the personification of everything bad, how can there be any good in it?

Well, as I understand the lyrics, Mick is holding up a mirror to human savagery and pointing out that our actions show us as being right on the same page as Lucifer. But of course, we are not immortal like Lucifer, nor impervious to harm ourselves, as he is; plus, we are harming our fellow creatures. But it's unclear (in the song) whether we have made free choices in our barbaric actions or whether Lucifer instigated them.

But either way, it's nothing to be proud of.

There can't. But without knowing what is evil, how would we know what is good? One can't exist without the other.

That's probably the reason why evil has to be created.......

Have a look at the quote from Goethe's Faust that Bulgakov uses to introduce The Master and Margarita, an inspiration for 'Sympathy For The Devil' (the novel is discussed here, incidentally: [www.iorr.org]).

Goethe's play, and the Faust legend more broadly, is a good example of the Devil not always playing to type.
