thumbs up

love it.
fact is i've spent more individual time, and happy about it,
with about a dozen of their records before this one, but this
has so many really ace tracks and performances of merit that
I'm loathe to make a personal competition about the relative rating
with other stuff, it surely is a great Stones album, which makes
it a very, very Highly respected and well loved final 'product'
in the Entire rock and roll History experience, imo.
some unbelievably great stuff here that i still go to regularly
and reliably.

My favorite album is Some Girls and in my opinion the greatest album ever made.

All the rest of the Stones albums are great too of course.
To each his or her own.

Some Girls is criminally overrated and lyrically Mick gets dick-slapped by Barry Gibb:
‘Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk
I'm a woman's man, no time to talk
Music loud and women warm, I've been kicked around
Since I was born
And now it's alright, it's okay
And you may look the other way
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man’

Mick only wishes he could’ve worked The New York Times into his New York album. He gets credit for parading the Puerto Rican girls with their case of wine line but still Stayin’ Alive takes the prize.
In short, Miss You – like disco - sucks. The story about the semen found in Rod Stewart’s stomach saved his career just like Miss You saved the Stones but today the less said about both the better, right?

The guitars in MY are slightly whiny but diggable I suppose but the remainder of Side One is 15 minutes of unremitting head-gonging. Weakest side of any Stones record I can recall. Side Two is rather good but Faraway Eyes and Shattered are gimmicky and the lyrics to Beast are pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty Grrr. Respectable is, well, respectable while Before They Make Me Run is the true gem of the bunch. Barely half a good album really.

For me Some Girls belongs to the best Stones albums together with the big four, BB, LIB, SF and Exile. I think it is a matter of taste which one of these you consider ultimatley their best. 1978 for the last time the Stones really succeeded in being "relevant" for the broad public.

All the songs of Some Girls do have their charm. Lies is the only song which I don´t appreciate too much; Miss you and Imagination are not among my favourites, but I really love Shattered, Beast, Some Girls, Whip, Respectable and of course Before the make me run (one of Keiths best).

In 1978 rock music was a force($) (compare to what it is now). First they released Miss You as a single which upset some but seduced a lot of others. Then came the album. The stones had to fight the attacks from the punks
rockers and that gave them a purpose; exciting times.SG symbolically has great historical value; the stones hit the eye of the musical target as music was becoming more and more a product and less a vehicle for social changes.

I think is a great album. Not only one of my favorite Stones albums but one of my favorite albums from any band. It has it all. Respectable / Beast Of Burden / Far Away Eyes. Wowsa. Then there is Before They Make Me Run Keith at his best!

GREAT GREAT album

I will admit I never ever want to hear Miss You live again. But I still love the album version. And when it comes on the radio. The volume goes up!

The big 4 are interchangeable, ultimately I would go w/ Exile myself. But to me, clearly after those is Some Girls!
I can get behind this.

Relevant.

That word gets tossed around a lot with music. One could say BRIDGES TO BABYLON was relevant because of how they did some songs on there with looping etc, the production techniques they were a little bit late on but still had some pretty good results.

The problem with BTB is that some of it, in regard to the production at the time, culturally, is just bad, like Might As Well Get Juiced and Gunface - horrible songs to begin with and then because of the production, they fit the time, so there's their relevance to being on the LP.

Yet something decent, Saint Of Me, features Charlie being looped, copied and pasted... and it sounds absolutely pointless. Then there's that ridiculous sample in Anybody Seen My Baby, which basically ruins the song. It comes off as a 1990s Miss You in a way, just nowhere near as good.

Nice video though.

But in terms of what you're talking about, being relevant for the broad public, TATTOO YOU was a big record, of course, and was a #1 album in the UK, unlike SOME GIRLS, but nowhere near the selling point of SOME GIRLS (88 weeks on the Billboard chart and better charting singles than TATTOO YOU) and Miss You.

SOME GIRLS was obviously their peak in terms of the general public's appreciation since it's their most selling LP ever.

However, you could look a little deeper and realize that the last time they had any relevance regarding the public was with UNDERCOVER, with the songs being topical of the political moment, violence going on at the time that was quite specific, and the banning of their videos - back then, they went for destroying the envelope, not just expanding it, possibly with the idea of if it gets banned it creates more attention, since they weren't going to tour. U, like SG, is a very time relevant record, where as TY is a more general album, there's nothing that grounds the album with a place like SG does or cultural events in specific parts of the world like U does.

It may seem strange but FORTY LICKS is their highest charting hits compilation, reaching #2 in the UK and US.

Seriosly though. Yeap, Some Girls might be the album I also play the most. If I had to vote, I would say the best is LIB, followed by SF and SG, but they come very very close. Plus of course BB, Aftermath... damn, it is so difficult. I can call any of of those The Best, depending on my current mood.

20000 Light Years is brilliant. The album sucks. It should've been an EP:

2000 Man
She's A Rainbow
2000 Light Years From Home

TSMR is an ace album that has justly caught the attention and imagination of more and more people.

A beautiful and fresh sounding 3D expression of who they were in 1967.

There's no accounting for taste... and some people have odd taste when it comes to liking such a drab artistic flop of an album... that has four great songs on it.

i'm surrpised so many fans don't care for "Lies" offa SG.
It's a highlight for me. i often play this one and love it.
just the five of them. i guess jags added one of the rhythm guitars ...
...
...this one pile drives. lurv it.
yess yesss it's playing now...

Fire, fire upon your wicked tongue

Lies, lies you dirty jezebel

very interesting post, ty.
not sure i totally agree w all of it but no matter,
it's a fascinating take and resonates w me...
thanks.
i'd just automatically shut down hearing bee gees disco, even tho
i liked that edgy little movie (that went so big) at the time.
and did appreciate it; but i was a rocker from a dozen years or more
at the time...and well....i didn't buy the album or take any of it home with me..
...but you quoting Gibbs impressive lyric-take interests me,
it's really moving when i see it in print; i don't think i ever
really tried to work out too much of what he was squeaking..
(i dug "Massachusetts" and ALL their 60's hits very much)...

I do like SG but i never stopped to consider it a great album
near the bonafides the Golden albums, and some before even THAT,
earned. and are still earning in my music tastes and listening ....

There are at least five better Stones albums than Some Girls, i.e., the usual four and Aftermath UK.

I started playing guitar by learning the Jagger guitar songs on that album. My guess is that I'm not alone in that respect.

Nope. Tis an album born of their life experiences, a bit of fun and experimental with many influences. A musical progression from their previous album and a step towards their next, and possibly best album, which thankfully kept some of the experimental edge of TSMR.

Yes, I know what the diet and zero stones are and we've established that you prefer them to the real thing.
