Stones Roadies

Hi everybody. To my knowledge, there has never been much discussion about who roadied the famous Stones tours. Does anybody know who was on the crew in, say, 1969? We all know that Stu and Sam Cutler were involved, but were there any other memorable characters in the road crew? All those Ampeg cabinets sure didn't move themselves from city to city.

Chip Monck was the production manager, Tony Funches was security.
After 69, they put together more professional & secure tours.

Ethan Russell's book Let It Bleed has all the details.

Yes he was, in a way. He was the roadies's boss, the road manager.

Until 76 there was only a relativly small crew. Security, stage set-up, etc. was largely done by people hired at every town.

He most certainly was.....in 1963/64 at any rate.
The band's needs changed of course over the years. HERE are some names, from Road Manager to Tour Manager, Logistics Manager, Head of Security etc:

MIKE GRUBER....mid 60s
BOB BONIS......mid 60s
ALAN DUNN...1968/2010 APPX.
ARNOLD DUNN.....?/2010 APPX.
JIM CALLAGHAN...1969....30 years service?
CHUCH CHURCHILL ?

All holding senior positions so not strictly your average roadie.

Does anyone remember what part of England JC was from? I met him a couple of times and I know he mentioned an area of London, but I don't remember where.

Bob Bonis was on the Stones' first US tour (1964).
Arnold Dunn joined the team in 75/76 I believe.
Chuch Magee's real name was Royden Magee.

And what about Guitar Technicians?
What was the first tour that they used Guitar Technicians?.

Pierre de Beauport is I think since the 1989 Steel Wheel Tour the GT for Keith.
What about the others?
And has Charlie always the same Drum Technician?
Did Bill had a dedicated Bass Guitar Technician?

Chuch Magee and Johnny Starbuck were real characters and nice guys and Johnny still is of course. Chuch came with Ronnie from The Faces as far as I am concerned and Johnny worked for Fleetwood Mac before the Stones. Alan Dunn still works for The Who I think.

A lot of things have changed since Pierre de Beauport took over as chief back line crew and not for the good, if you know what I mean. For example for the last Europe and USA tour all the old back line crew members were not asked to work for the tour. Obviously Pierre de Beauport was able to build his own little empire/universe within the Stones. I have heard of many things that do not shed a good light on him.

Alan Dunn owns a bed & breakfast. A friend of mine (also a musician of some note) stayed there in 2012 and ended up hanging out and jamming with Mick Taylor.

I hung out with Pierre in a bar when they played two shows in Hartford, CT in the early 200os. Cool guy. Weird thing was he was staying in the Hilton and The Stones (and I) were staying in the Goodwin. The Goodwin was a small, luxury boutique hotel so that may explain it.

I have a pic that I took of Ian Stewart carrying Charlies drum kit in to a gig at Dingwalls dancehall, north Londin in 1978. Must find it.

"All the old back line crew members were not asked to work for the tour"

What does that mean? He recruited a brand new crew from scratch - by himself?

I don't know much about this, but recall that Alan Dunn had been Mick's PA for a long time, having started with the RS in the 60s. He is godfather to one of Mick's children.

Well, it wouldn't be particularly difficult to find able people more than willing to work with the Stones. I hadn't heard his information before but it's interesting. I can't really imagine Pierre telling Charlie or Ronnie who they could use for their backline crew however, I would think those are more personal band member decisions. Love to hear more about this.

David Rouse was the Mick's guitar guy in the 90s and 00s but I don't think I've seen him in the 10s

Changing crew before the 50 & Counting-thing could have made sense, if needed.

But after 14 On Fire - why?

He also was Mick's "Best Man" at Mick and Jerry's wedding.

Why would it make any more sense before 50 & Counting?
