I can't help it. I have to share. I think Pepe Romero is the greatest guitar player on earth. Here is him covering the standard, Maleguena, just a few years ago. I discovered Pepe when I was in college, about 23 years ago, when I stumbled upon a record he had recorded when he was 15. By a stroke of magic, that very year Romero came to my college campus (in Maine!), along with Joe Pass (!), Leo Kottke, and Paco Pena for a four-man "guitar summit" performance. Romero was in his 40's at the time, and was magical, absolutely flawless. As a drummer, I can't really compare any rock drumming prowess to the technique and finess of a jazz drummer (which I am not), and likewise, a skilled classical guitar player is just in a different category of musicianship than, say, Eddie VH. Finger-tapping is great, but not when it is just a mess of awkward notes. I am a fan of music. I like a guitar solo that actually sounds brilliant. Keith's Ya Ya's 'Sympathy' guitar solo is amazingly expressive. I love the guitar solo in the middle of Jesus Christ Superstar (the original Broadway version). Knopfler's early solos are beautiful and there are other great ones in rock and roll, of course. But Pepe Romero... is in a class all his own.

Dickey Betts, "Blue Sky."

I mentioned this on page one of this thread, but gave credit to both Duane Allman and Dicky Betts - they both play beautiful leads.

Allman Brothers guitarists Duane Allman and Betts alternate playing the song's lead, Allman solo beginning 1:07 in,
Betts joining in a shared melody line at 2:28, followed by Betts solo at 2:37. "As I mixed songs like "Blue Sky,"
I knew, of course, that I was listening to the last things that Duane ever played and there was just such a mix of beauty and sadness,
knowing there's not going to be any more from him," said Sandlin

Blue Sky

Indeed one of the best dual leads ever.

Too many to name, but wanted to mention Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues" - great tone and phrasing.

At the risk of being savaged....

Tony Peluso's great solo at the end of The Carpenter's "Goodbye To Love"

(around 2:45......he also plays a less frantic solo at around 1:20)

Mean Town Blues from the Johnny Winter And live album. It is a great dueling solo song between Johnny and Rick Derringer. Full unedited version.

Bill Nelson (BeBop Deluxe), live version of Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape. Despite the slightly out-of-tune bottom E string, this solo has been my closet favorite for 35 years. The feeding sustain, the swoops that end each phrase, the untypical non-bluesiness, the waterfall cascades, the start and stutterstop playful phrasing.

The first solo starts at 1:46, then another at the end:

In the overlooked-but-great category: Pete Townshend's solo toward the end of the live CRY IF YOU WANT bonus track on the Who's IT'S HARD, 1997 reissue. That remastered, reissued IT'S HARD with four bonus live tracks wasn't much noticed, so I say overlooked.

I must add Robin Trower Live from 1976. Daydream, Too Rolling Stoned, Rock Me Baby, brilliant solos all the way through. And the sound of that Stratocaster...

My personal favorite blues solo. I can't listen to it too often because it drains me, haha. The actual solo starts at around 2:12.

Nice one! Peter really had it going on in 1976. That backing band was a perfect platform for his guitar playing, imo. Just listened to that track and I agree it was a great solo. Most people just remember the Do You Feel Like We Do solos which were also pretty damn good, the final one sticks in my mind as pretty damn fun. Starting off with the voice box and ending with that amazing build.

thumbs up

John McLaughlin was a pioneer when it comes to Jazz Shredding and a whole generation of guitar players were influenced by him, till date. Funny enough with the "New Barbarian's" bass player Stanley Clarke on the next one, a tune inspired by Coltranes' "Giant Steps".smiling smiley

Yeah very good that. Still think the version on the Rainbow Bridge record beats all the live versions I've heard though. That was perfection. I was a toddler crawling around on the Maui beaches when Jimi did this show. Amazing to think how much that man would effect me many years later, must have been something floating through the air on that island that day. Cheers for adding this one to the list.

yes Anyday a typo.. This is a time stopping solo, of course just an example but it is astounding how many Duane's get listed. He is perhaps the.most important electric guitarist of all.

What a fantastic thread!

Comfortably numb and "objectively", although too commercial for many, Eddie Van Halens solo on Michael Jacksons Beat it, was SO well executed and so spot on for the song and certainly part of it's success as well.

Ronnies in Maggie May is also a favorite of mine, it just fit's so beautifully into the song.
