I guess I can't really argue with Dylan being number 1 but i would have put Lennon–McCartney together at number 2 and then the glimmers at number 3.

IMHO, right after Dylan should come Joni Mitchell. The number three spot for Lennon-McCartney, fourth spot split between the Twins and Chuck B as the Twins owe much of it to him as do so many other rock'n'roll artists.

Surely Berry isn't the equal of Jagger and Richards as a songwriter?

.....

Olly.

CHUCK BERRY.....Number 4 .....I mean seriously what has he written, apart from My Ding A Ling in the last 50 years?
For sustained quality over the long term, I would have Paul Simon and Randy Newman at 4 and 5.
In terms of lyrics only, Lennon superior to Macca, in my view.

Bowie at #39???

No Freddie Mercury on the list either...

Clearly an 'American' dominated list...

These "Greatest" lists are so subjective as to be meaningless.

When you add qualifiers like "most successful" or "most money earned from their songs" they are more meaningful and less controversial. Those kind of facts can be easily checked but I think controversy gets better coverage these days which is the whole goal of websites like this one.

Yes, it makes no sense John and Paul separate should be furtger down but as Lennon–McCartney they would be aat home on number 2. Roger Waters, Phnil Collins and Peter Townsend not on the list is ridiculous and the Bee Gees are way too far.

Freddie Mercury was a poser who wrote approx 5 decent songs. After the Beatles probably the most overrated band of all time

Seems like they split up Lennon and McCartney so that Dylan could be #1. Lennon and McCartney together are obviously #1.

Ding A Ling is actually a Dave Bartholomew song from 1954

The "all time" part of the list is a joke. Obviously it's for the rock era until present.

I'm not sure the glimmers deserve higher. They were only writing great songs for 7 or 8 years - 65 til 72.

Went back over the list and I must say, for something called the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, it dawned on me how much they missed the fluckin' boat. Where are George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Dorothy Fields, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin and so many others who wrote songs that have stood and will stand the test of time? I guess you could say RS magazine meant greatest pop/rock/country/soul/r&b writers, but that ain't what it says at the top of the page.

Totally meaningless.

To a Stones fan Jagger/Richards are Number 1...........or at least 2.

To a Beatles fan its gotta be Lennon/McCartney..............etc. etc. etc.

Don't think that this POL is about all time quantity but all time quality.

It has nothing to do with all time ... See the post above about Gershwin, Ellington, etc

It's more what rolling stone mag thinks are the best songwriters out of the acts that rolling stone mag writes about.

Robert Johnson is on there?

Agreed that these lists are stupid but in addition to Jagger/Richards as obviously #1, the following being ON the list is an utter joke..

>Bjork - what is a Bjork?
> Kanye - what!
> Patti Smith -
>Radiohead - uh huh. sure. (Whatttttttttttt?!)
>JZ - Oh poor Jesus
>Joni Mitchell - and at #9!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>Max Marton - Um, what IS that?

Plus..Pete Townsend is Top 10
Smokey is indeed great but not #5
