Bitch, settle my bar bet
Posted by: Pietro ()
Date: August 13, 2015 02:27

I made a bar bet about the song "Bitch." I said Keith Richards played lead on that song and Mick Taylor played rhythm. Was I right?

The other guy said Keith Richards played rhythm and Mick Taylor played lead.

Who was right? I was right, right?

You were right, Keith played the lead stings, Taylor the ace riff.

Am I wrong to believe that while Taylor was preset, that whichever guitar part was coolest, it was played by him?

In concert Keith is definitely playing lead - check the 71 Marquee gig for example.
The way Andy Johns talks about the studio track it seems Keith had a lot to do with the rhythm part as well.

Re: Bitch, settle my bar bet

He plays the lead in the studio as well. He could have had a lot to do with the rhythm, even if he didn't play it on the final version. I believe the latter is correct, with Johns's quote in mind.

Yes, I knew he plays lead on the studio version - sorry I didn't say that clearly enough!
I meant I'm not sure he didn't play rhythm as well in the studio. I don't insist that he did,
but he certainly had a lot to do with it. Pass the caffeine please

I know. Just wanted to erase the little doubt among other posters about the lead guitar.

The rhythm guitar question is an endless debate. I believe it is Taylor, but it does indeed sound different to what he does in concert.

Keith plays parts of the riff on the 1989 versions, but then it sounds different to the studio versions as well smiling smiley

To replace "was coolest" by "most boring" in many cases isnĀ“t wrong either. I always thought MT was playing lead on "Bitch" and always was quite surprised to like it nevertheless...

There is no debate about the rhythm guitar. It's Taylor. Listen to the extended version, Richards doesn't play like that. The album version is just more straightforward.

There has been a debate on that guitar on this forum for years, mainly because of the aggressiveness and attack in that rhythm guitar, something Taylor hasn't shown us too many times.

Well he did on the extended version which also includes a rapid rhythmic approach that Richards has never shown. I think the case is closed my friends.

There is no doubt anymore, I agree.

I wonder what guitar/amp setup he was using.

Looks like I won the bet, though not decisively. I wish somebody would ask KR or MT about this. I'd like to know for sure.

Taylor does the rythm guitar, Richards the lead.

They did colour Taylor's guitar in the mixing and mastering process quite a bit though, giving it much more drive and push. He sounds more like Richards than like himself!

In other words: Taylor was a splendid rhythm player if he wanted to.

I do believe they enhanced Taylor's sound in the studio for this one as some here already mentioned he never played it the same way live. My favourite riff of his has to be the one one on live takes of Live with me. Does anyone know if he came up with it, or he lifted it off Bill's bassline?

All studio recordings have "enhanced sound".

Taylor just plays it in a more focused and defined way on the record.
