Re: If the Stones opened a show with a rockin' version of "Stupid Girl"...

I'm not sure this song - lyrics wise - would go over in today's culture/world. It's a put down and questioning of a certain type of woman/person and how they don't deal with the real. Most people hearing it in concert would not gt this meaning at all. And, yes, I agree with what someone noted above - a bunch of old guys doing this song is dumb.

Hmmm, just had a thought re this song: How about they play it and segue right into Cool Calm Collected followed by Who's Been Sleeping Here. That'd be a mind blower of put down tunes for a wild original Stones set in a show..

Never gonna happen. We'd love it but the broader base of greatest hits junkies would stand there and go.."Huh? What's that?"

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

Many probably scratched their heads during the opener in 1994 and 1995 as well, but it was cool. Very cool! smiling smiley

Yeah, that was a good opener! But I'm thinking that maybe in 1994, the ratio of generic "classic rock fans" to diehard Stones fans wasn't quite as unbalanced as it is these days. Back then, the band were still tipping their hat to the real fans with some less than well-known songs.

"Gonna find my way to heaven ..."

Yes, to all of those, back when they opened with Under My Thumb back in '81.

I disagree. The Stones as individuals and in private live are old men but on stage they are THE ROLLING STONES, an ageless phenomenon. So it wouldn´t be dumb to do that song. The song is part of their history as artists/songwriters.

A 87year-old poet wouldn´t seem silly to read a poem in public he has written in his 20s, so why should the Stones playing Stupid Girl be silly. Only because of age? Age is irrelevant when they are on stage. It´s The Rolling Stones. Paul McCartney could do Ob-la-di-ob-la-da at his age and it wouldnt be more silly than it was when the song was written.

I've read some pretty dumb things on this board but this has to be the top one. Where do people come up with this stuff.

Actually, at this stage in the game is there even any reason for setlist discussions? It would be a great surprise if they do tour again to hear a couple new songs and tunes from the blues album. But I'll kinda bet it will be deja vu all over again...Hope I'm wrong! smiling smiley

Come on BV can we get at least a day or two of discussions before the thread gets buried in that setlist vault?

IMHO there are houndreds of Stones songs that are better than Stupid Girl. And there are many more reasons not to play it.

Stupid Girl is a throwaway track.

It's as logical as opening with Hold Back.

Stupid Girl is a silly song.

At this point, it's senseless to discuss setlist options. It made sense 5, 10 or 20 years ago, but not now. The fewer shows they play, the more they will rely on "well-oiled" stuff. Forget any exotic excursions. I doubt that even one-offs like Come Together or Kansas City will ever happen again.
